About Thomas Smallwood

My wife and I married in 1959. I am currently retired, but my woodworking hobby shows in the handmade furnishings in the house. Her knitting skills are on display through the house. Our three children, 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren enjoy playing in the snow and hiking the woods.

Thomas Smallwood purchased this house in 1993

Why Thomas Smallwood chose South Fork

After years of hiking the national forest and wilderness area, we vacationed in Lake City. When departing we went through South Fork, saw and fell in love with the town and this house. Here we have everything.

What makes this house unique

We enjoy the quiet, feeding the deer in the yard in the fall, and being in the mountains. All the activities we enjoy are here, most at no additional cost. Even though the house is located in a subdivision, it seems to be very remote. We also have some of the best, most helpful neighbors in the world

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The house provided us with everything we needed. The wood stove was great on very cold evenings. The WiFi worked well and the house was equiped with everything we needed. We would definitely return!

Perfect for our family!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time in South Fork! My husband and I stayed there with our 7year old and 8year old. Our cabin was wonderful and the owners were most accommodating with information and timely responses leading up to to trip. The cabin was very clean and well stocked. We will definitely be back!

What a great cabin!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I with 2 children stayed at the cabin for 7 days and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We made day trips outside of South Fork after hiking several trails there. We loved staying in the cozy, well equipped cabin with lovely western decor. Our needs had been anticipated and the immaculate home readied in advance of our visit. We loved being able to cook instead of eat out though enjoyed the Whistle Pig barbecue, Cottonwood Cove steaks and Rainbow grocery for everything else. The visitor's center at South Fork was fantastic. We drove to Pagosa Springs, Gunnison and Durango for attractions including hot springs and river floating, boat ride on the Gunnison river from Morrow's point and the Durango to Siverton train ride with informative bus ride back. We prayed the Stations of the Cross at the shrine in San Luis and sandboarded at Great Sand Dunes! We plan to return to South Fork and stay at the cabin again as soon as possible and will rent a jeep to enjoy more of the South Fork trails including Wheeler Geologic site and Summitville. We've never enjoyed a vacation more in large part due to fantastic accommodations and host. Thanks very much!

Great Weekend Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful spot to get away for the weekend! Cabin was well-maintained and sported every amenity. Fireplace was cozy, and the heater worked just fine, too. Wifi was strong, had a great time watching movies, playing games, and eating home-cooked meals with friends.

We enjoined our stay in this lovely home. It was just right and reachable to all the places we went.

Soooo much better than a cabin. Thanks again, Deb, Julie and Merilyn (2013)

Family Vacation

  • 4 of 5

This property was clean and had all the essentials available for our use. We stayed four nights and went to the ski lodge at Wolf Creek during the day. My overall experience was great. The only reason I rated as good instead of excellent is because the hot water heater is set up on a timer for the use of two people. There was an override switch which was supposed to make it possible for everyone in the group to have plenty of hot water for showers. Unfortunately, we could not ever figure out when to push the override to make sure there was hot water for everyone. Do you push it everyday at the start of the day, before the first shower of the day, after each shower, etc???

Overall great property, comfortable, well stocked and clean...If I stayed again I would definitely want more thorough instructions on how to operate the hot water.

Owner's Response: I am very sorry that this guest did not understand the workings of the 40 gal. hot water heater. It is set to heat water during the "low usage" periods of the electrical system to conserve energy. The system has an "override function" to heat water during "peak" usage periods that is fully explained in the guest manual which, unfortunately, this guest failed to read. The system is also explained to each arriving guest by my local representative upon arrival.
