Moccasin Island is actually a pair of small private islands (totaling a little less than one acre) and are located on Burntside Lake. They are quiet and isolated and are about four miles from a public landing. Burntside Lake is one of the 5 designated “Valuable Resource Waters” in Minnesota. It is wonderfully clear and well populated with Lake Trout, Walleye, Northern Pike, and Bass.
The cabin is located on the larger island and includes a kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms with two twin beds in each. The unfinished attic has two additional twin beds and makes a great hideout for the kids! The cabin also has a large full width deck near the water’s edge, perfect for dining outside and watching Loons, Beaver, Osprey and the occasional Bald Eagle
A footbridge with a large boathouse and deck connects the islands. The deck is built out over the water, provides a great place for fishing and swimming. The smaller island has a screen house with a small deck that overlooks the water, a favorite sleeping spot for some visitors. The moonrise is magical and northern lights can be a bonus.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is within sight of the island. Canoes are included, and it is a short paddle to the BWCA if you wish to make a day trip.
The Island is rustic but comfortable. The lights, stove, oven, and refrigerator all operate on propane gas and there is no electricity or running water. The outhouse is tidy and “civilized” and a solar shower is available for washing. Paved paths connect the cabin to the facilities and the boathouse.
Fine dining is available at Burntside Lodge – a scenic15 minute trip by boat. Ely is a lively community with many shops and restaurants. The Wolf Center and the Bear Center are also worth visiting. Tower, located about 22 miles from Ely, offers tours of the old underground mines. The Ely golf course 25 miles west.
Rent is $1,150 per week from June through Labor Day. 50% at booking balance at arrival.

My now husband and I called about this property on a Monday with hopes of arriving that very night and the owner made it all happen! He was so willing and happy to help make our last minute honeymoon work...and it did! The cabin is so sweet and the furniture is more than fun, retro cabin. It was a perfect place to get away from it all and just relax and enjoy our time together as newlyweds. We used their motorized boat and it allowed us to boat over to Burntside Lodge one early evening to enjoy a treat there. This place really does hold magic and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a mini retreat! We also enjoyed the ability to rent it for 3 nights. Most cabins only have weekly rentals, which we didn't have time for, so this was perfect. We will most definitely be back!
Our family spent a wonderful week on the island with our three children (ages: 21, 16 and 8). The owners were very kind, and everything worked as described. The cabin had just the right amount of comfort for our taste, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We made really good bread and pastry in the gas oven. There were lots of blueberries everywhere on the islands, smaller but much tastier than the store-bought kind. Our favorite pastimes were reading on various rocks around the island, canoeing, exploring, fishing and playing games. The sunsets and sunrises were spectacular, and we spent hours gazing at the sky during the Perseid meteor shower. I would recommend this place to anyone who’d like to spend a carefree week away from the noise and busyness of ordinary life – it was an unforgettable experience.
My wife, 13 year old Son and I loved our week, except having to leave! The pictures don't due justice to the real thing. We fished, canoed, swam, hiked into the BWCA, explored Public islands, looking for Blueberries, and spent hours just looking at the incredible views in all directions. The screen porch on the other island was one of our favorite places to sit and read. the moon rises and sunsets were incredible. Our last day we were treated by a double rainbow. The owners were very gracious and helpful. Everything about the cabin was as we wanted. It was clean, the propane stove, fridge and lights all worked. If you love nature, solitude, adventure, and don't mind an Outhouse, lake bath or solar shower, this is Heaven. We have been to Mexico, BVI, and Costa Rica, and this was my favorite. I'm told Burntside Lodge has wonderful meals, and Ely is a nice place to eat, shop, and see sights; we were so happy here, we didn't want to leave for a moment.
