New Orleans House Rental Photos and Description

Security, guest service and cleanliness definite issues

  • 2 of 5
My family thought we were renting the entire property for a family vacation in New Orleans. The main house has 9 bedroom, with 4 additional bedrooms at the back of the house that guests need to exit the main house to access. The night we arrived, the property manager offered anyone in our party the option of using any of those rooms. My niece thought it would be great to have a room of her own so took one. On that first night, someone broke into her room while she was sleeping and stole her laptop, all of her money, identification, house and car keys, even a sweat shirt. She woke up at 7:30am and her window and door were open. We spent our first day waiting for the police. The property manager was unhelpful to say the least. We had to go find him at every stage of the process.

Once we had the break in, my husband went through the house to check all points of access. He found most windows on both floors were unlocked. I would have thought that these basic security measures would have been addressed prior to our arrival. The bars on the windows on the main floor windows do not lock.

The night we arrived the property manager told us that we were the only ones in the house. He did not tell us that he lives on the third floor with his partner and both have total access to the house. The property manager also had some guests over during our stay. One of our family came out of her room on the 2nd floor to find a stranger, with a key, coming in the door. Most keys fit most rooms. So if you are renting one room, be assured that someone else staying on the property likely has access to your room. We also found that there was a man staying in one of the back rooms that we came upon when outside one day. We had no idea he was there and during the police investigation, it was us who informed the police, not the property manager. There is only one security camera at the front door and nothing at the back of the house where our robbery happened.

The house has an overpowering musty smell. There is mold in the bathrooms, often electrical outlets don't work and one of the rooms on the top floor does not even lock. We advised the property manager of this but he did nothing to address it while we were there. The housekeeper does not replenish towels each day and when she does, it is not every room that gets them.

I would not recommend this property until the owner addresses these issues.

Lovely House, Poor Housekeeping

  • 2 of 5
I rented the "main house" at Henry Howard House so family would have a place to stay together while in New Orleans for my son's wedding. Henry Howard House is a lovely old building with true New Orleans character. It's in a great central location in the garden district.
The property is an 18-room B&B. They offer an option to rent the 9-bedroom main house in it's entirety to include the kitchen, dining room and sitting area. There are an additional 9 rooms with separate entrances in the back of the property. What they do not tell you is that when someone rents the main house – the guests in the other 9 back bedrooms ALSO have access to the main house. Often we found strangers wandering through the main house, even in the middle of a party we were hosting. This was very disappointing, uncomfortable and startling the first few times it happened.
The housekeeping was poor. One of our rooms had an overpowering smell of sewer gas. When I mentioned it to the housekeeper she said they needed to have someone take a look at the toilet. The property manager said there was no odor. Odd that the housekeeper knew what I was talking about but the property manager did not. After a day or two of airing out, deodorizing sprays, a thorough floor washing and scented candles I requested that we be given one of the other outside rooms. The property manager agreed.
The ceiling fans were caked with dirt, grime and hanging cobwebs. There is a layer of dust on most everything and the floors are clearly not washed. The shower curtain liner in my room had many areas of mildew on it. The refrigerator designated for our use had large, sticky brown spills on the shelves. Ironic that rental of the main house includes a cleaning fee.
The towels in my room were musty smelling. Clean towels weren’t provided with any regularity. The beds were straightened in some rooms but not others. Sunday is apparently the housekeeper's day off but no one informed us - we caught on when we found a stack of towels piled on the credenza in the hallway.
The property manager told us to leave our dishes for the housekeeper but then later complained about them. He also complained to one of my guests that it was very hard for him to run the outside rooms as a B&B while someone was renting the main house. I would suggest they not offer the option to rent the main house if it causes a problem.
I do not recommend renting the main house of this property if you expect cleanliness or privacy.

Wonderful wedding weekend at Henry Howard House Inn!!!

  • 5 of 5
Fantastic experience! Everything I love about my hometown New Orleans is right here! Very clean. Comfortable beds. All of my guests raved about the place. Highly recommended! Great, great value. We rented the whole house, but would be just as valuable for individuals/couples, too. A hot breakfast in addition to continental style served at your leisure was a big plus. Innkeeper is super nice, accommodating, and available. Keep it up, John; you've got a good thing going on here. Thanks for everything! FYI: Though the one balcony does have a view of St Charles, it is not directly on the Avenue...which is not a bad thing at all- just don't expect to catch beads off the floats from here ;)
