About Janet Trogdon

We had visited Niagara on the Lake many times over the years and like everyone else that visits, we just loved it. It's history and the uniqueness of the architecture, its sense of community and beauty were all major attractions to us. We had the opportunity to move here and grabbed it with both hands and have never regretted it for a minute. We have lived here for more than ten years and are still entranced by it. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Janet Trogdon purchased this house in 2008

Why Janet Trogdon chose Niagara-on-the-Lake

We had been looking for a vacation rental property in the “prettiest town in Canada” for some time. We had seen several beautiful homes, but none of them offered quite what we were looking for. Eventually we found this one. It was sorely in need of some TLC and renovation, but we could see past the work that needed to be done and we knew immediately that this was the one we wanted. It was cute, the location so close to the town centre couldn’t be better, and our guests would be able to easily walk to everything the town has to offer – theatres, restaurants, shops, the lakeshore, etc.

One day, after several months of renovating and tidying up the exterior, a lady knocked on the door to introduce herself. She explained that she had been watching the progress with keen interest because she had lived in the house as a child, along with her 5 siblings (she still lives close by)!

We invited her inside of course so that she could see her 'old' home. She became quite emotional and tearful, gave us big hugs, and said how pleased she and her sisters were that someone loved this house again. It held so many wonderful memories for them all. She went on to tell us that it was always filled with music and laughter when they were children. Her father used to play the piano and they would all sing along while he played. We were so pleased that she was able to see her old home again, and that she liked what we had done to it. As she left, she asked if we would mind if she brought another of her sisters to see it. She did, and her sister’s reaction was the same as her own - she loved it.

We were thrilled by their heartfelt pleasure and delight. Our first impression had been right, we sensed it had been a happy home. It had a good ‘feel’ about it when we first looked at it - and it still does! There is something warm, cozy, re-assuring and welcoming about it, sensations which many of our guests have commented on when they arrive.

You're sure to feel it too.

What makes this house unique

As realtors always tell us; location, location, location is crucial, and Abel Thomas House has it!

Park your car when you arrive and you don't need to drive again until you go home! No long walks into town, although so close to everything the house is on a quiet residential street, so its very tranquil.

One of my pleasures on an early summers morning is to pick up a cup of coffee and walk with Bailey our dog, to Lake Ontario (five minute walk) and watch the sail boats racing or people out in their fishing boats. There is something wonderfully tranquil about that scene.

Its a two minute walk to the local coffee shop, where you can sit and read the paper or chat to the locals.

Its a couple of minutes walk to: boutiques, restaurants, groceries, locally owned bakery, post office, golf course, parks with children's play area, outdoor community swimming pool, tennis courts, baseball field, volley ball court, convenience store, liquor store etc.

No driving unless you want to. Many cycles paths for safe cycling, bikes can be rented locally and delivered to the cottage.

If you have a dog, a 2 minute walk to the 'common' will get you to the off-leash park, they have a marvellous time there!

We have many coupons from local wineries for free wine tastings.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We very much enjoyed our stay in your cozy accommodation. It was a perfect location to celebrate our sister's 60th birthday. Janet and Eric were very accommodating and made our stay effortless. We found the cottage to be very well appointed and very comfortable. It is the ideal home away from home.

Adorable cottage made for fantastic stay!

  • 5 of 5
Abel Thomas House is an adorable, spotless little cottage we stayed at Jan. 24-26th 2014. Our mini break here was exactly what we were looking for, and staying at abel Thomas really made our weekend outstanding! 2 minute walk to everything, couldn't have asked for a better stay in Niagara on the Lake, and this charming house was everything we could have asked for and more. Definitely recommended, we will absolutely be returning!
A definite highlight of the weekend was the snowshoe wine tour we went on at thirty bench winery! Located a short drive away, the tour consists of a snowshoe instruction, a beautiful snowshoe tour of the vineyard which included 5 tastings of their delicious wine! To top it all off, upon return to the lodge, they serve homemade soup by the campfire, with of course more wine! More than well worth the 30 dollars per person! We hope to absolutely do this again! All in all the best weekend we could have hoped for!

A Home Away From Home...

  • 5 of 5
Had a wonderful time at Abel Thomas House. Just the two of us, our two small dogs and we invited another couple for 2 of the nights. We had an amazing time visiting the nearby restaurants, spas, wineries and shops. Our dogs loved the fully fenced backyard and the parks close by. We had a quiet cozy New Years there by the fireplace watching movies. There was lots of room for all of us and we enjoyed having a private ensuite bath so the guests could also have their own. We are all planning to head back this Summer!! Although in the past I have stayed at the Local BnBs and enjoyed them too, there is nothing like having a home away from home while vacationing! Well worth the money!

Great Family Holiday

  • 5 of 5
The best thing about this property is the location - a very short walk to all the theatres and restaurants. The house is clean, comfortable, nicely decorated and has a very well equipped kitchen. We were 3 generations and everyone enjoyed the holiday immensely.

We had a lovely weekend at the Abel Thomas Cottage. A perfect getaway from the city for our family incl baby & dog. Our hosts were friendly, accommodating, and helpful. Left a pack & play and booster seat for baby which was nice touch. Our highlights included the wood fireplace, the comfy atmosphere, the waffle-maker, the proximity to downtown, and the multiple gathering spots (living room, dining area, basement). Would have liked to stay for longer. Would highly recommend to a family or small group of friends for a low-key relaxing weekend (or longer!!)

Owner's Response: Thanks Kelly, we are so happy that you enjoyed your weekend away! It seems that a weekend is never long enough to see and do everything! We always look to put things in the house that we'd enjoy on a holiday away, so I am glad you made good use of the waffle maker! Hope to see you and your family again soon!

To Niagara Parkway the route to Niagara Falls
Car: recommended

Live Theatre, jazz concerts, classical music, outdoor concerts, volley ball courts, wineries, historic sites, off-leash park, outdoor community swimming pool, football pitch, paddling pool, helicopter rides, horse and buggy rides, nature trails, behind the scenes theatre tours, fruit festivals, Christmas Candlelight Stroll, fruit stands, children’s playgrounds, tennis courts, Butterfly Conservatory, Botanical Gardens, Luxurious spas where you can pamper yourself, have a massage or maybe a couples massage, manicure, pedicure, lots of different services offered. Take a Whirlpool Jet Boat ride up the mighty Niagara River, a real thrill, be prepared to get wet! If you’re not keen on getting drenched there are covered boats but that’s missing half the fun. Cycle rentals are available, they’ll deliver them to the house. Cycle along the Niagara Parkway, a beautiful ride all along the river, a cycle path runs the full length, so its very safe for cyclists. Cycling on side streets in the town is also safe, they’re very quiet, and no one is in a rush here. The horse and buggy rides will pick you up at the house if you like, or you can start your ride outside the Prince of Wales Hotel, which is just a minutes walk from the house. Take time to walk around the town, off the main street, you’ll see beautiful homes, English style gardens and be in awe at the variety of flowers and plants. No matter what time of year its just the prettiest place to visit.

We’re blessed with a ‘micro climate’ in NOTL, where our winters are not as cold and not as long, and our summers are longer than the surrounding area. Our gardens are in flower earlier in the Spring, and we don’t get such an early frost so our gardens are in bloom longer. We have thousands of acres of vineyards where different varieties of grapes are grown, producing world-class wines and a specialty of the area ‘Ice Wine’. This region is also the fruit basket of Ontario growing strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, peaches, apricots, pears, apples, plums and vegetables etc. You can stop at one of the many fruit stands by the side of the road and pick up some wonderful locally grown produce, it tastes sooooo good! Take some ‘home’ and make a strawberry milk shake, or have peach French toast for breakfast, a real treat.

From gourmet food to family friendly we have restaurants to offer the best of the best. Or do you like to cook? We have amazing farmer’s markets offering artisan breads, cakes, etc. and many other items, and boutique food stores that will inspire even the basic of cooks!

I am always surprised by what our guests do in our town that I have never even thought of! Photographers, gardeners, birders , geo-cashers, vintners, cyclers, antiquers and geekers… seems we have something for everyone!

If you visit during January and February you're in for a treat, the Ice Wine Festival is in January, very popular and loads of fun. Also available are Snow Shoe Wine Tours, the shoes are provided and you'll get instructions on how to walk in them (they're easy), you'll have a guided tour through the vineyard with plenty of tastings of the different varieties of wines and when you think you can't possible consume any more, you'll be given a great bowl of delicious soup which can be enjoyed while sitting beside the fire!
