Only a few steps to one of the most pristine and beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico, Villa Coqui is a classically styled and well equipped guest house ready for your perfect Caribbean vacation. This area of the island is known as the 'Garden of the Atlantic,' and it's easy to see why once you've spent just a short time here. This is truly a nature and water lovers paradise with miles of untouched and uncrowded beaches to explore. Snorkeling, kiteboarding, surfing, swimming, fishing, diving, windsurfing and many other watersports are available right out front or at the many surrounding spots within a short drive.
Villa Coqui has been designed in the spirit of traditional beach shacks by optimizing a tranquil, open common space and by minimizing distractions, bells, whistles and touristy knick-knacks. We've deliberately minimized decor and large scale entertainment centers to optimize your tranquil island experience. The decor includes original art of the surrounding area, cool tile floors throughout and simple, comfortable furniture. The expansive front windows provide brilliant light that give the main room an open, airy feel. Enjoy a good book on our 'L' couch, or plan an exciting day with your friends and family at the round kitchen table over fresh local mangos, papayas and oranges. Villa Coqui has plenty of ceiling fans throughout, which help provide great ventilation and bring the fresh Caribbean air direct to your senses. Escape the high rise condo/apartment complexes. Trade the beach hotel experience for a more intimate and private beach vacation.
Villa Coqui boasts 2 bedrooms with A/C in both: one holds a full bed; the other 2 bunk beds. Both rooms also have open, hanging closets. The beds are fitted with all organic, eco-safe, breathable cotton linens and pillow cases for a comfortable and natural deep sleep.
Other necessary amenities such as hot water, refrigeration, a gas range, toaster oven, blender, in-line tap water filter, cooking utensils, and dining ware are provided. The house is best suited for 4 people for maximum comfort and adequate living space; however, an additional person could be accommodated on the couch if needed (additional fees apply). A stereo system and high speed internet with WIFI are set up for your enjoyment at the house.
Outside, you'll find landscaping that includes lemon, palm and aloe plants. Birds and other wildlife frequent the area including wild parrots, pelicans, tropicbirds, doves and cormorants. There's also an outdoor shower behind the house -- perfect for a fresh air rinse after a great beach day. Our porch comes complete with chairs and a small table for relaxing over a morning coffee, book or chat. There's also a charcoal BBQ perfect for entertaining a few friends in the evenings.
The neighborhood is quiet, safe and secluded in a small beach community that claims an extremely friendly Garden Bar just a few blocks away. There are 2 other restaurants within a few minutes by foot. Within about 20 minutes by auto, you can access grocery stores, more restaurants, movie theaters and gift shops. Other activities at the beach or nearby include tropical horseback trail rides, golf, caving, rain forest hikes and more. We're happy to provide plenty of suggestions for recommend activities based on your vacation needs.
We hope you'll enjoy your time at Villa Coqui as much as our past guests. It's one of the most special places on earth, and it makes us extremely happy to share it with you.

My name is Colin Gowland. I was born in Canada and spent most of my life there, traveling for sports interests when I could. In 2002, I moved to the Outer Banks to pursue a career in kiteboarding. In the same year, I begun traveling to Puerto Rico in search of the finest wave and wind conditions in the Caribbean. Myself and other close friends and family scoured the island for the best conditions and vibes available - what we found time and time again, is that we really just wanted to be at Shacks. I now reside in Maine, where I work in the yachting industry. I enjoy sailing as well as most watersports; I also love music-- both playing and listening. I try to get back to this beach house whenever I can. Shacks is a magical spot: one of my absolute favorites, and I hope you enjoy your time there as much as I have over the years.
Colin Gowland purchased this villa in 2007
We had a great time at this vacation rental.
It had everything we needed. Because we were there just a short time (5 days) we didn't have the opportunity to cook much of our own food, but it seemed as though the kitchen was stocked to do so.
There was air conditioning in the bedroom, but we didn’t need it. There were windows on all sides of the house for a nice cross-breeze. We didn’t make use of the bunk beds in the second bedroom, but there was more than enough space to store our clothing. The outdoor shower was a nice plus after walking on the beach.
The next door neighbours were very friendly, although we didn’t see much of them. The street was very quiet, and we could usually only hear birds. At times we could hear planes taking off, but it really didn’t bother us. The beach house felt like our own private escape.
Walking along the beach during the day and at sunset was great. You can walk a long way in either direction. We took advantage of the location to have a sunset dinner at Eclipse, and to go horseback riding. For other places, we needed a car.
When you stay here, go to Ola Lola's. Not only was the food great, but the owner gave us recommendations of his favorite things to do in and around Isabela. He suggested that the waves were too high that week to swim within walking distance of the beach house, and sent us to Crashboat Beach. We aren’t surfers, but it seemed like the area around the beach house would be great for surfing.
The house has maps, guidebooks, and printouts of places that surfers might like to visit. It made a great base for trips to the surrounding area (including Gozalandia falls), and was an easy drive from the San Juan airport. The owner was extremely helpful and responded quickly to emails. We can’t wait to return!
We (two adults and two kids) have stayed there for 7 weeks, had a great time and enjoyed it a lot. Everything is in the right place, there is AC in the big bedroom room which we did not need, a big fridge (filled with cold water on our arrival <- next time beer please), stove, lots of other cooking utensils - lots of space in the big room. There is a second bedroom with bunkbeds for the kids. You can park the car (a must here) inside the property and can store your gear (windsurf in my case) under the porch. We were allowed to use the snorkeling gear and surfboards of the owner. The "manager" kept very good care of us, when we run out of gas it was replaced within 10min. We did not use the terrace a lot as it was very sunny and spent lots of time in the shade on the beach just 30sec away. The sea might be rough and a paradise for me while windsurfing, for the smaller ones there is very quiet snorkeling area 200m to the right and 1km to the left there is a really nice baby pool with cristall clear water and in the shade. Shacks Beach is a small community of water sport enthusiast and we made frieds very easily with the mostly north american retired or part time retired wind/kitesurfer. Shopping is 4km away, there are two restaurants in walking distance. We send the big daughter to school while beeing here, Escuela Micael. Well this should be enough - I really hope to return one day...
Killer location to meet all your Puerto Rican expectations.Warm clear ocean just steps away; surfing, kiting, windsurfing, snorkeling,& swimming at your fingertips. Perfect vacay house - simple & comfortable indoors or out.
This really is a great location, and for us, Villa Coqui was a good launchpad for all our activities. Our family stays away from tour guided activity and we'd much rather do things on our own which is why we always choose a VRBO location.
1) Villa Coqui is in a perfect location for snorkeling, Scuba, beach play, and it's within 15 mins of some of the most beautiful beaches. Go to Wishing Well, you won't be disappointed. The house has wifi, yeaaaaa! It's almost a must now, but assuming you have VZW for cell service, you're hosed in Pr so wifi was our only form of communication. Yes, spoiled in the States.
2) The beach 150 ft away is nice, both left and right. You can walk straight in off the steps but be warned, there are sea urchins all over! Shoes would be a must here. A short walk to the right and you'll be at Shacks Beach where you can walk in and snorkel and just let the kids play.
3) Prior to our arrival, Colin sent a document about the house and how to get here with various other info. This was such a great document for local acclimation. Thank you!
1) House condition - it's ok, not the best we've stayed in and certainly not the worst. At the time we stayed, the house was for sale and we were informed that an appraiser would be coming...meh. There was a pipe that wasn't attached, I'm assuming it was drainage of some sort. I placed it back on. Be warned, there is hot water in the shower but you wait for it, it's a little trickle. Not that you need it, but in the morning it's nice. The outside shower handle isn't on at all. The screen door to the patio was bent to the point the door can't be closed - makes it difficult for airflow.
2) House necessities - The coffee pot, oh boy, several pots ended up all over the counter - throw it and get a new one. The towels, it's my opinion there should be an overabundance. We bought 10 for the house. The AC remote had no batteries, used my own. There were only two garbage bags, we ran out and bought more. The paper towels, ran out, bought more. The blender, doesn't work, spins but nothing happens.
3) Neighborhood - the dogs, shut up already! People in the house behind us were partying all the time, mostly at night. On the weekends this place can be a mad house, cars and people. This should go without saying, you're booking next to an airport that means planes! Loud planes, fortunately not that many - a few a day, morning and evening is what it seemed for us.
Pluses: very nice/responsive property manager, great location very close to beach, nice breezes esp in large bedroom; we did not need to use AC. Use of washing machine. Fenced yard with grass, not too noisy (some barking dogs). Kitchen is well equipped, though no microwave. Nice layout in the main room with a counter + dining table + coffee table/couch area. Small collection of books/games/sand toys.
What could have been better: second bedroom is tiny, with much shelf space taken up by owner's stuff--eg a large number of heavy quilts (?). There are no rails on upper bunk, making it a little precarious for kids. Several things were in poor repair--eg fridge leaked a lot causing puddles on the floor; bathroom smelled; outdoor shower handle fell off every time we used it and there is no door/curtain on the outdoor shower. Not super clean--we found mold covering a pot that had apparently been put away dirty, & under the sofa was filthy. Couch is apparently meant as outdoor furniture, cushions constantly sliding off.
About the location/neighborhood: Shacks is a beautiful, clean beach and you can walk far in either direction. Many good snorkel spots. There is lots of sharp coral, sea urchins, and relatively rough surf and strong currents. There are places where kids can get in, & my five & nine year olds snorkeled happily, but it's not the kind of beach where you can park yourself in a beach chair while kids swim on their own for hours. For that, we drove sometimes to Crashboat (biggish beach with litter, food kiosks, paddle board rentals etc) and Montones (big shallow tide pool that never gets more than a few feet deep & has no waves). At the bottom of the street the house is on is a gross but fascinating swampy area where many birds & iguanas hang out. we enjoyed Ola Lola's (dinner) and the Breakfast Club (on the same premises).
We enjoyed our stay here and the house was perfectly fine, but relative to the three other houses/apartments we have rented in Puerto Rico, I expected it to be nicer for the price. Others were variously bigger, cleaner, in better repair, had nicer landscaping etc for less money. However, the other places we stayed were in Vieques, near El Yunque, & Old San Juan--not in Isabela--it may be that the market here is priced higher for some reason.
