About Conrad Nelke

We are at the time of life where we can be our own 'bosses' (retired engineer & English CC teacher.) Our family comes first, then friends (also 4 legged variety) followed closely by golf (him) bridge( us) reading (us); Travel (Our planes head mainly to towns where kids & friends live) Next, Remodeling--him, work--her, inspiration. Club & volunteer stuff-- him HO, her KD; TV--him, sports. her drama!

We have been married for 50 years to the same people! Both: married '59, graduated Kansas State '60, had baby, '61, baby '62; baby '63--in '64 we got a dog!! All goes well.

Conrad Nelke purchased this cabin in 1985

Why Conrad Nelke chose Payson

We wanted a place away from the valley where all of the kids and grandkids could come and be together. We found the area while visiting friends in Whispering Pines in a gorgeous snowstorm the day after a warm Thanksgiving in Phoenix. It seemed like heaven to be able to share both worlds with only a two hour ride. We wanted in! We had the shell built and completed the house ourselves. We picked chandeliers from Mexico, rocks for the fireplace from all over the country, and furnishings from family pieces, 'gently used' and even broke down and bought a lot. It works as 'eclectic to the max,' The views in this area belong to God--we just bought here so we could share them. There is a feeling in the air here that brings out the best in people which makes them happy.

What makes this cabin unique

Inviting friends here for a day or a weekend is a joy for us & them. Everyday cares fall away as the pines, oaks, and juniper give the air a certain mountain tang. Actually, The 5,400 feet elevation makes the nights 25 degrees and days 15 degrees cooler than valley temperatures. Here, we have seasons that give us soft spring rain, exciting summer electriical storms, vivid autumn leaves, and frost, snow, & earmuffs.

We never tire of seeing the glorious views of 40 miles of Rim that we share with God. Sunsets from the north deck are amazing, and the experience of watching a storm approach through the valley until the new rain finally drives you from your nest in the porch swing inside--unforgettable. We have had many memorable family reunions here--there have been two Golden Wedding celebrations, a Honeymoon--the magic is just beginning. You won't want to forget your time here. Bring your best camera.

Amazing Property

  • 5 of 5

The property is huge! The pictures don't do it justice. The home is well equipped with entertainment and all the modern amenities that you would need to feel comfortable. The view outside the main living room is breathtaking and the privacy is A+. Would recommend to anyone, especially big groups.

Great outdoors, big house, great amenities, cleaners need to focus a little more on the details

  • 4 of 5

This home is huge, and has plenty of beds and space for 10 people, has wifi, tv, home phone, with amazing beautiful views from the 2 balconies and the large window in the living room that shows off all the scenery of the trees during the daytime and inspiring view of the night sky in the evening. A great big patio for BBQs with seats for everyone, plenty of space and privacy were you don't even see the neighbors and all less than 2 hours away from Scottsdale. HUGE basement with a ping poing table and a foosball table that we guys really enjoyed.

The only issues we had were one rather large spider we discovered inside (and "took care of") by the sliding glass door the first morning but what do you expect out in nature and the fact that there were a few cobwebs in some corners that we noticed, I would recommend having the place get a more detailed cleaning every few months, especially since there is a cleaning fee. Overall I would absolutely recommend this location to almost anyone who wants to spend some time with the family away from the noise of the big city.

Thanksgiving Weekend at the Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Wow, what an awesome time we had at the cabin. We decided to get away for thanksgiving this year, and researched tons of places, and selected this cabin based on various pictures, description and reviews. We are very pleased with our decision. Talk about Million Dollar Views! We couldn't get enough of hanging out on the deck. The cabin is very spacious as other reviewers have said, it was perfect for our family size. My kids spent a lot of time in basement, where they played ping pong, foosball, and we were able to bring their video game system and hook into the big screen. We also did some hikes in the area, Water Wheel and Tonto Natural Bridge, what a great adventure. Cabin was well stocked, we had everything we needed to make a great thanksgiving day meal. The cabin was also stocked with tons of firewood, conveniently located in a cabinet right next to fireplace. The only bummer was that we didn't really see any wildlife, except for a few squirrels (which excited our dog!). We would (and will) definitely stay at this cabin again.
