This is our dream house with everything we ever wanted in a Vermont property. Deep in the forest with all the quiet and wild life and yet close enough to all shopping, skiing and night life that we do not have to travel far if we want it. The property is magical with a Stone House, fireplaces and beautiful forest views from every window. There is also the wonderful Sterling Brook that runs through the property as well as cross country skiing trails, hiking and mountain biking trails and access to amazing wild life.
Tranquil peaceful beautiful surroundings but a house that has everything you need for surround comfort. Wood stove, fireplaces, Jacuzzi, gourmet kitchen, wine refrigerator and all that you need to be content at home yet night life and restaurants as well as down hill skiing and other year round activities near by. The best of both worlds.
My family and I recently spent a long weekend at Stone Cottage, a warm and inviting vacation home tucked away in the woods, just 20 minutes from Stowe, VT. After a day of cross-country skiing the trails near the house, we enjoyed relaxing with a glass of wine by the fire-burning wood stove. The kitchen is fully equipped with china, cutlery, dishwasher and full-size refrigerator. There is also a flat screen TV, internet, and washer/dryer. The cell phone coverage is great, too. Had no problems making calls with my at&t phone. As a frequent traveler, I especially appreciated the comfortable beds and soft towels. Stone Cottage is a great getaway that offers easy access to the great outdoors yet is only a 20 minute drive to downtown Stowe.
Meeting up with friends, I drove from Washington DC, passing through the bustle of New York City. As I drove further north, the falls colors greeted me in vibrant hues of yellow, orange and red. Upon entering Stowe I found a charming town center, passing by the local dairy farm on my left, and soon thereafter a goat creamery on my right.
My expectations were running high as I approached Stone Cottage and they were more than met. Stone cottage has been fully renovated, with an exceptional kitchen. Lots of space for friends to gather, and yet nooks to read a good book or to just look out as nature envelopes you on all sides.
Cross-country skiing is right outside the door. With great downhill slopes very near by. Biking and hiking are a must. Be sure to bring good boots. A short drive away, there is an exceptional interpretative trail taking you all the way down into Sterling Gorge. And the drive approaching the slopes is breathtaking, from the waterfalls, to the tight winding road, to the boulders unexpectedly appearing out of nowhere.
There is a grocery store conveniently located nearby for all the basics, but I would strongly recommended going into town and getting some of the excellent Stowe cheeses, milk, fresh baked breads, muffins etc. And I should not forget to mention the assorted selection of restaurants and cafes. Local farmers market on Sunday is worth the visit.
My stay was far to short and I look forward to returning for more exploring.
Spotlessly clean, comfy, quiet, private. My first visit to the Stowe area. Stone Cottage turned out to be both a great getaway in the woods (on Sterling Ridge high above Stowe) and a convenient base from which to get out and about and return to.
My son and I had the privilege of being the first guests at the Stone Cottage after its recent extensive renovations. If Hansel and Gretel skied this is where they would want to stay on vacation. The cottage was hand crafted by a mason from Scotland from local stones. It really does look like the set for a fairy tale. That being said, the Stone Cottage now features every modern convenience you can think of--great kitchen, big TVs with full cable offerings and really nice attention to detail everywhere you look.
There is a hiking/snowshoeing trail through the property and nearby Sterling Gorge is a spectacular geological formation. The town of Stowe is justly famous for its world class restaurants, breweries and night clubs. Stowe Mountain Resort is arguably the best ski resort in the East and Stowe also has an unmatched network of groomed cross country ski trail. Mountain bikers from all over the country flock to Stowe for some of the best single track anywhere.
Our family had a great week in late July and early August staying in this lovely cottage set in woods near Stowe. Apparently originally built as a two-bedroom home, it was doubled in size to add a master suite with stain-glass windows, fireplace and jacuzzi, a parlor/sunroom, a laundry room, etc. The kitchen is all new but the feel with slate floors and fireplace is rustic and cozy. The back yard is set up for a barbeque and picnic. The town of Stowe is charming with good restaurants and markets. We found a lot to do nearby including two remarkable waterfalls with pools for swimming (Brighton Falls off of Route 108 and another two miles north of Stowe off of Route 100); hiking to Sterling Pond from Smugglers’ Notch; biking along the trail that straddles Route 108; poking around craft shops, cafes, and clothes stores; the obligatory Ben and Jerry’s tour; and it only took about 40 minutes to get to Burlington for a ferry ride and then another 15 minutes to get to Shelburne Farms with lots of kids’ activities.
The entire Stowe area is wonderful for 4 season activities. Hiking and mountain biking, wonderful food, famer's markets and many local events. Every season has its special events.
