This lovely log cabin, 2 miles from Wisp Ski, and 1/2 mile from lake, which is great for year-round enjoyment. Be close to all attractions and feel like you're in a secluded hideaway. Year-round Maryland vacation activities abound in Deep Creek Lake Maryland.
In the mountains of Western Maryland in Garrett County, Deep Creek Lake offers recreation and relaxation year-round. Deep Creek Lake Maryland has something for everyone. Activities and things to do include boating, water skiing, hiking, whitewater rafting on the Youghiogheny River, snow skiing at Wisp Resort, hunting, miniature golf, and championship Maryland vacation golf courses. For shoppers, numerous fine gift shops are nearby. Within a few minutes are restaurants of all types. Five state parks including Swallow Falls State Park which features Swallow Falls and Muddy Creek Falls, Maryland's largest waterfall are a short drive away.
Deep Creek Lake State Park : Most of the parks visitor services are located on State Park Road along the waterfront of Deep Creek Lake. The park includes approximately 1 mile of shoreline on this, Maryland's largest man-made lake. Access is available for fishing, swimming, and boat launching. Several picnic areas offer excellent views of the lake with easy access to the beach and other facilities.
Swallow Falls State Park : This mountain park is located nine miles north of Oakland, Maryland and contains some of Maryland's most breathtaking scenery. The Youghiogheny River flows along the park's borders, passing through shaded rocky gorges and creating rippling rapids. Muddy Creek Falls is a crashing 53-foot waterfall – a spectacular sight. Tall hemlocks dominate the silent woods. The meandering trails through Swallow Falls guide hikers to some of the most breath-taking scenery in Western Maryland.
My extended family had a great weekend in this cabin. There was plenty of room for sleeping and hanging around the house. Although it is close to activities and restaurants, the house feels very secluded in the woods. Sitting around the fire pit and relaxing in the hot tub were our favorite activities. I would recommend this house to anyone looking for a place to stay in the Deep Creek area.
I'm just writing this review to state that a number of issues raised by the previous reviewer were corrected by the time of my early August stay. The furniture in the cabin is quite worn, but in general it met the expectations I had considering the price and the fact it's a cabin out in the woods.
The issues we did have were primarily with the wi-fi which worked VERY rarely. It was a fairly major pain, especially as cell coverage is very spotty in the area. Thankfully, prior to our arrival, I had written down addresses of places we wanted to visit so our car GPS picked up the slack. Without those addresses the lack of internet would have been a real problem rather than just a nuisance.
An exterior motion sensor light recommended by the previous reviewer is spot on. Also, as a note, use Google's directions to the address. Our car GPS lead us astray up a neighboring set of gravel trails which was very unfortunate considering it was pitch black and a narrow and winding unpaved road. If others have had problems in the past then maybe the owner could begin circulating directions from the main road to the cabin prior to check-in.
In general, the cabin is a very nice, large space, as is the yard. The basement still had a dank smell while we stayed, but it wasn't too bad (no boat in the garage so I'm guessing that was moved out and helped with the fumes the previous commenter noted). One guest did kill a very large roach in the basement so a pest treatment might be in order, but in general the bug issue was minor (an odd spider or moth here and there) considering the setting.
4/5 stars; would recommend.
We set out to find a somewhat last-minute rental for a long weekend getaway for our adult family. We didn't expect frills, but we did expect a functional property. Unfortunately, that was far from the case. We ended up spending much of the weekend resolving issues that arose. We honestly feel as if we are owed a partial refund.
This is a good property for the cost-conscious vacationers, who just want to get away without frills.
The fire pit was great.
Although it's a bit tricky to find the place, it is in a nice location, even with the views of trailers.
While we didn't use it, we did note that the hot tub was clean.
The owner and property manager were responsive to the issues we encountered during our stay.
Overall, the place is worn. Carpets are stained. Floors are peeling. The furniture in most rooms is not in good shape.
We had planned to cook all meals; however, upon arrival, the refrigerator wasn't working and the grill was missing. The owner and property manager replaced these items during our stay, but not before we had to eat out for 4+ meals.
The bottom floor wreaks of mold and fumes (from the boat in the garage). It was so bad that we did not use the bedroom, bathroom, or rec room on that floor and kept the door to the basement closed at all times.
We could not use the AC, as it immediately circulated fumes from the garage.
The living room furniture is especially bad.The couch arm has exposed staples.
The pots and pans were filthy, and in some cases, rusty.
The twin beds in the floor upstairs are awful. The frame and wire coils creak and squeak when you make the smallest of movements. It is so bad that people in the room across the hall can hear when you are tossing and turning. It was impossible to get a good night's rest.
The pool table is not functioning. Not only are the pool sticks missing, but one side of the actual table is broken and looks like it's going to fall off completely.
The dishwasher doesn't work properly. All of the dishes and utensils were dirty when we arrived.
The WiFi worked intermittently at best.
The Living Room TV does not work properly.
Beware: if you arrive after dark, the drive from the main road to the cabin is a bit tricky. It is a steep, unlit, gravel road. The cabin itself does not have lighting. It would be great if there was a motion sensor for incoming cars. Getting into the property was tricky as well.
We really enjoyed our stay at the property. It had everything we needed. The area is great, even though we stayed in the cabin the whole time. Definitely planning a return trip.
Fabulous, clean, well maintained secluded cabin. Still close to restaurants, stores, lake, etc. Enjoyed quiet walks, fire pit, hot tub (which was cleaned prior to our stay and mid-week), pool table... Our group ranged in age from 6 to 84 and EVERYONE had a good time. Also has a nice sized yard for children and fur babies. Lots of wildlife right outside. Easy booking and highly recommended for a Deep Creek Lake memory. Thank you Sheila, for the hospitality. The Dorsey's..
I have to say this place is really nice and spacious I plan to stay there again very soon. I recommend this place to anyone and the place is maintain really clean which I liked a lot.
Deep Creek Lake, Maryland
Other Activities: Our favorite activities include boating on the lake, snow skiing at WISP, Visiting Swallow Falls, and Black Bear Falls.
Our favorite bar especially in the Summer is the Honi-Honi. The WISP resort also has great food and alot of activities including a Zip Line, Mountain Coaster, Dune buggies, and paint ball.
Golf: Wisp Resort Golf and Lodestone.
Golfstyles Magazine named the Wisp Resort Golf Course one of the “100 Must-Play Courses of the Mid-Atlantic.” Designed around the natural contours at the base of Wisp ski slopes, with breathtaking views of the mountains, this 6,700 yard, par 72 championship course ebbs and flows along tree-lined fairways, and past strategically placed bunkers and water hazards.
Ski: Wisp Mountain Resort
With a world renowned energy-efficient snowmaking system and over 100 inches of annual snowfall in Garrett County, Wisp's 132 acres of ski terrain provide snowsport enthusiasts an incredible winter playground. Non-skiers and boarders won't be left out, in fact, they'll have as much trouble deciding what to do next with all that Wisp Resort and the Deep Creek Lake area have to offer: mountain coaster, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, fly fishing and more.
