The Caretaker's Cottage offers a panoramic view of the Adirondack mountains. The Cottage is a year-around modern rustic domicile situated on 15 acres in the High Peaks Area. It was built in 2003 on the foundation of the old caretaker's house, which was destroyed by fire in earlier years. The Cottage is located at the edge of the Adirondack Park and is surrounded by forest. It feels quite secluded although it is a mere quarter of a mile off the local highway. The AuSable River is only a short walk from the cottage, the village of Upper Jay, Whiteface Mountain, Keene and Keene Valley (http://www.roostercombinn.com/activities/) and Lake Placid are all within a 20 minute drive. Vermont and Montreal are easy day trips. The Essex ferry to Vermont is less than 45 minutes away and it is about a two hour drive from the Cottage to downtown Montreal.
For those who just want to relax, the Caretaker’s Cottage provides ample opportunity. The large porch, with its open view, encourages visitors to sit and just enjoy the moment. It is a great place to relax with your morning coffee or unwind after a day of activities. If you love the notion of getting away from 'it all' for a few days this is a great location plus the environment is quite cozy and comfortable. The living room features a beautiful fireplace, arts and craft decor mixed with native touches. The cottage is fully furnished with washer/dryer and most other amenities. The style mimics that of the main house with its hardwood and tile floors, wood-panelled walls, high end kitchen with full size appliances (electric stove, refrigerator, dishwasher), microwave, coffee maker, toaster.
There is quite a bit of wildlife in the area. Don’t be surprised if you see deer, turkey, grouse, fox when you drive up to the house or while you are relaxing on the porch. Occasionally less friendly critters have been seen, but they tend to play scarce.
For those looking for a bit of activity and adventure, this area offers many attractions. Activities in the area include: hiking (trailheads for Sentinel Range (http://www.cnyhiking.com/SentinelRangeWilderness.htm), Giant Mountain (http://www.adirondack.net/business/giant-mountain-11079/) and Jay Mountain wilderness area (http://www.cnyhiking.com/JayMountainWilderness.htm) are nearby), biking (Ironman), fishing, rafting, rock climbing, adventure parks, golfing, skiing, to mention only a few.
Nearby High Peak villages include Wilmington, Jay, Upper Jay, and Keene. The village of Upper Jay is home to the Wells library, a post office, a motel, the 'Recovery Lounge', church and a local dairy. The library is a great resource for those interested in local history. The local dairy sells milk, eggs, cheese, yogurt along with a few other items. The 'Recovery Lounge' and the former local church host concerts and plays. Jay is home to a local museum. Keene and Keene Valley offers several places to eat.
We will be providing Internet services in the near future. We DO provide phone services. Verizon cell phones work well in this area along with the high end TracFon. We provide a few games and a small variety of books and a few magazines. This is intentional as this is a place to share your time with one another and enjoy local attractions.
This is strictly a no smoke and no pet facility.
