I was born in Bar Harbor and my entire family lives or works only 5 minutes from our rental homes. My husband was born in Wisconsin and he fell in love with MDI the first time I took him there in 1996. He knew even before I did that we MUST have our own property there so that we would always have an excuse to go north whenever we could!

Mt. Desert Island is such a beautiful place - we both are so thankful that we can experience it many times a year and I must say that we are struck by the beauty and the solitude every time we go 'home.'

We hope that you truly have a wonderful time whether it is your first experience or you have been visiting for 20 years.

My Dad's motto is...'If you come to Maine once it won't be your last time.' Of course he is pretty bias on the subject - having lived in Bar Harbor all his life! I wish everyone could get one of his Island tours-they are awesome to say the least!

He started working as a chauffeur at age 15 and he can tell some stories. He and my Mom owned several restaurants and motels and even developed the largest campground on the Island, Bar Harbor Campground which my youngest brother now manages.

Seems like our family has been in the hospitality trade forever and...with all that experience we have certainly learned how to take good care of our guests!

AWESOME

  • 5 of 5
A relaxing visit in a peaceful location close enough to town (10min) but total solitude and calm. Everything you might need if furnished including baggies if you want to pack your lunch. Beds are very comfortable good towels with washer and dryer so we came home with clean clothes. Place is located so it is easy to get to both main areas of the park. (Busy side and quiet side.). Would definitely recommend for a wonderful visit for all.

Owner's Response: Thank you Janet!
Just love it when my guests are happy! I do try to think of things that will make your vacation days easier and more enjoyable-I basically set up the house as if I were coming to stay myself. If I might want it...you might want it...so that is what I provide.

If you get a sunburn...we have Aloe Vera Gel.
If you get a bit sore from hiking/biking...we have Epsom Salts.
If you need a Lingerie Bag or Drying Rack or Spot Remover...we have it.
And you should see the contents of the "junk drawer"- that is really comprehensive!

Of course all the normal things are there, too!
Iron and ironing board, blender, toaster, popcorn popper and mixer.
We even have all the pans and basic baking items that you would need to make muffins, too! You just bring the milk, eggs and blueberries and you are ready to roll!

The location is really GOOD, too.
The cross street Knox Road actually creates a triangle that connects the 2 major routes on the Island (Rt. 3 and Rt. 102). You just have to choose right or left when you exit Grant Street. The Island is not that large but convenience is still a plus when you are going downtown to Bar Harbor to meet the whale watching boat or heading to the Jordan Pond House for afternoon tea and popovers-YUM!!!

Please call me if you have any Q's or if I can help you arrange a great vacation spot for your family.
Thank you! Lorie

WHAT A GREAT PLACE!

  • 5 of 5
This was our first time to try VRBO and I can't imagine a better initiation experience. Being skeptical is natural but you should have no worries about selecting this fantastic house as your home away from home. It is secluded, but close enough to all the things you’ll want to see on the island and beyond. Lorie was so easy to work with and it’s clear she takes pride in this home. The house was laid out such that is very flexible depending on the number in your family and the beds were very comfortable. When she tells you that anything you reach for will be there, she means it. The house is stocked with everything you’d expect and so much more. Most importantly, the place was immaculately clean! We did a lot of research and looked at a lot of houses in this area and on this site. We even saw some of them in our travels while we were there which provided further confirmation that we made the exact right choice by selecting The Birches. We can’t thank Lorie enough for helping to make our 2nd honeymoon so special.

Owner's Response: Oh, Christopher...you made my day! What a wonderful review! Thank you so much!

I firmly believe that once travelers experience the convenience and comfort of renting a home for their vacation (rather than staying at a hotel) they will usually choose that option in the future when possible.

It makes for such a satisfying experience when you have the opportunity to cook your own great food and save money by doing that. You also get to enjoy visiting and relaxing with the whole family as opposed to being separated when having different rooms. Also one of the best things...especially when staying with us...you don't have to pack all those "creature comfort" items that I include in our inventory.

Some of those items include:
A fully stocked "junk drawer" complete with stapler, tape, pens/pencils, note paper, post-it notes, flashlights and extra batteries.

We also let guests know that if they bring the eggs, milk and berries they can make muffins for breakfast! We provide flour, sugar, baking powder/soda, vanilla and many spices.

Additionally we stock several sizes of Ziploc bags, foil, plastic wrap, paper plates and liners, plus all paper and soap products.

We provide good quality supplies as well as allergen-free products so that adds to the positive experiences at our rentals.

Please call today so that I can help you make a plan for making some great vacation memories! Thank you! Lorie

FANTASTIC STAY!

  • 5 of 5
This was such a great house! From the moment we walked in I knew we had picked the right place. It's comfortable and quiet, which was a nice break from our crazy day to day in NJ. Our 2 year old loved her room and picked out the bed she was going to sleep in; the second bedroom in conveniently next door to the master. Lorie supplies a lot in the house. Movies, books, free wifi, dishes, silver wear, there was detergent so we could do laundry, soap, very comfortable beds. It was also very, very clean. It was located in an easy to find spot & right off of two major roads so it was easy to get to town & the park.

My only suggestions are minor - we would have appreciated a warning about how bad the Mosquitos were. WOW they were out in full force! An umbrella or two would have been nice to have, as well.

Lorie was great to work with! She was quick responding to emails, sent very detailed directions, and answered all of our questions. My husband and I are already talking about renting again next year.

Owner's Response: Michele--Thank you so much!! I am always so happy to hear that The Birches works well for our guests and I really look forward to having them come back year after year. It is a lot of fun making it comfortable for all age groups--we like to pamper the little ones and they love having so many toys, games and books just for them and the parents like the fact that they can pack less.

Yes, the mosquitoes were very busy last week...as it warms up and dries out that problem should improve. One never knows from one year to the next how the bugs are going to be especially early in the season. I would always include bug repellent when travelling-sometimes we have it at the house but better to be safe.

I will get some umbrellas this week! I always encourage suggestions as it helps me to improve-thank you!

We are expecting a GREAT 2014 season!
We encourage you to call today so that we can help you plan a wonderful Maine experience while staying in one of our 3 beautiful vacation rentals.
Take care! Lorie

PEACEFUL, CLEAN, TUCKED AWAY HOME

  • 5 of 5
This was my first experience renting a home on the VRBO website. After extensive searching of places in the Bar Harbor, Maine area I finally choose this property. The photos of each room in the home caught my eye, as the interior looked so clean and well maintained. My husband and I were not disappointed! The home was very clean and well stocked. Lorie, the owner, was great to deal with and even called one evening to check-in with us to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. We traveled to Acadia National Park and to downtown Bar Harbor during our stay. This was a perfect home to stay in away from the crowds in Bar Harbor. Very peaceful. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone planning a trip to the area.

TERRIFIC COTTAGE WITH EVERYTHING YOU COULD WANT

  • 5 of 5
This was a wonderful experience all around. The Birches is incredibly clean, well-maintained, and comfortable. It is easy to get to, conveniently close to Acadia and Bar Harbor, yet far enough away to be very peaceful and quiet. The decor is really lovely--classy and homey, and all of the furniture, including the beds, is quite comfortable. Lori, the owner, made us feel so welcome, checking in to make sure things were going well. The best thing about The Birches is that it has absolutely everything you could possibly need--good heat, high-quality appliances, books, movies, games, dish detergent, serving spoons, ziplock baggies, tupperware, extra batteries, tape, scissors, bug spray, beach towels, a full and fresh spice rack. . . I could go on and on. Let's just say that this is what I would want my house to be like, if I were a more organized and prepared homeowner. We never had to go to the store to buy anything other than fresh groceries, and we were able to keep the cost of the trip down by preparing all of our meals at home. By the second day, we were already looking at our calendar to decide when to come back next year. I highly recommend staying here--it is a terrific cottage and a wonderful way to explore Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor.

CLEAN, COMFORTABLE AND BEAUTIFULLY MAINTAINED!

  • 5 of 5
This vacation home met all of our family's needs! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay on Mount Desert Island and were so grateful that each day our adventures began and ended in this cozy cabin. It's tucked away on a quiet road but because the cabin is situated north of Somes Harbor, it's well situated for exploring both the quiet side of the island and downtown Bar Harbor and Arcadia Nat'l Park.

The owner really takes pride in the home. It was so clean and well maintained. Everything looks new! It came with all the appliances (dishwasher, clothes washer& dryer, gas grill) and cooking utensils we like to have for longer stays. We were even able to store our bikes in the garage. The owner also provides sheets, towels, detergents and has an array of trial size toiletries. In another review, I had read about the well-stocked 'junk drawer.' It was certainly the most organized junk drawer ever and sure enough came to my rescue when I needed a binder clip to close a bag of chips.

While we spent most of our time exploring, hiking, biking and swimming on MDI, my son was happy to relax at the end of the day and watch TV with on-demand, build a puzzle or read a book provided there. I liked the layout of the house with the two bedrooms being off a small hallway that connected to the bathroom. We felt like we had our privacy without being too far away from his room.

I would highly recommend this property. We stayed four nights but next time we'll stay longer. There is so much to do on MDI!!!! We felt like we only got a taste for all the island has to offer. Some of our favorites were: swimming at Echo Lake, biking at Witch Hole and Eagle Lake, spotting seals at Hadley Point in the evening, eating at Thurston's Lobster Pound in Bernard, and exploring Southwest Harbor. If you stay at the Birches, you can't go wrong. And did I mention that one morning, I looked out the window to see a deer only 10 feet from the window. We can't wait to go back!
