Desert Island, home of Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park, is an incredibly beautiful place where people come to relax, to play & to appreciate all that nature has to offer. 'The Birches at Acadia Retreat' has been created so that you & your family can stay in a wonderful & comfortable environment while you explore & experience all the beauty that surrounds you! Our charming, newly renovated cottage has tons of new windows, beautiful flooring & carpets!The fixtures & appliances are shiny & modern! This adorable place is beautifully maintained & lovingly appointed with great attention to detail. We have a bright, open floor plan where the living room, dining area & kitchen share one big space with a huge vaulted wood ceiling . The bedrooms are comfy, cozy & oh, so cute!! The 4+ acres provide a beautiful, secluded setting where you can enjoy the solitude & the fresh Maine air & lots of beautiful birch trees.

Major Renovation for this Vacation Rental!: This is only the third season that this home is being offered as a weekly vacation rental! The last time I opened a new rental it was so appealing that a very happy couple from Syracuse returns every summer for a two week stay for what is now 9 consecutive years! About Lorie Wiebrecht

I was born in Bar Harbor and my entire family lives or works only 5 minutes from our rental homes. My husband was born in Wisconsin and he fell in love with MDI the first time I took him there in 1996. He knew even before I did that we MUST have our own property there so that we would always have an excuse to go north whenever we could!

Mt. Desert Island is such a beautiful place - we both are so thankful that we can experience it many times a year and I must say that we are struck by the beauty and the solitude every time we go 'home.'

We hope that you truly have a wonderful time whether it is your first experience or you have been visiting for 20 years.

My Dad's motto is...'If you come to Maine once it won't be your last time.' Of course he is pretty bias on the subject - having lived in Bar Harbor all his life! I wish everyone could get one of his Island tours-they are awesome to say the least!

He started working as a chauffeur at age 15 and he can tell some stories. He and my Mom owned several restaurants and motels and even developed the largest campground on the Island, Bar Harbor Campground which my youngest brother now manages.

Seems like our family has been in the hospitality trade forever and...with all that experience we have certainly learned how to take good care of our guests!

'The Birches at Acadia Retreat' is conveniently located just 2 miles from the bridge onto Mt. Desert Island and 9 miles from downtown Bar Harbor. The Visitor's Center at the entrance of Acadia National Park is less than 10 minutes away. The Island Explorer which provides Free bus service to Bar Harbor & other Island towns stops just up the road. Ellsworth which is 10 miles away has more movie theaters, restaurants & shopping. Don't forget to go to the L. L. Bean Outlet store, Marden's and Reny's which are all located on High Street (Route 3) In Ellsworth. They have 'Wicked Good' stuff and fantastic prices!

  • You Can Rent 2 Houses Side by Side & Sleep 10! If you are travelling with a group and need more space we have another house next door that can be rented at the same time. That home sleeps 6 so we can sleep a total of 10 people between the two homes and that may be of interest to large groups!

    There is also tons of parking for several vehicles and plenty of storage for lots of sports equipment...boats/bikes, etc. in both locations.

The perfect home base for a trip to Acadia

The Birches at Acadia was our wonderful home base for our five-day vacation on Mt. Desert Island in August 2012. Lorie, the owner, was a lovely to work with--extremely personable and communicative. We found the home easily with her detailed instructions and were impressed by the cleanliness and thoroughness. The photos are entirely accurate and the house is stocked with everything you need: ziploc baggies to pack a picnic lunch, board games and movies, the latest magazines, and even a first aid kit (which came in handy after I took a tumble on a bicycle--needless to say, I was very grateful for the kit!).

The house is very conveniently located--just a ten-minute drive to the Acadia National Park entrance and downtown Bar Harbor. This was my friends' and my first visit to Maine and we would stay at The Birches again in a heartbeat. Thank you, Lorie, we had a wonderful time!

A Fantastic Find!

The Birches is an immaculate, cheerful, spacious home located in a a quiet, peaceful neighborhood on Mt. Desert Island. The pictures attracted us, but the reality exceeded our expectations. This is an impeccable home that is obviously cared for. All one's needs are anticipated in advance including kitchen supplies, toiletries, cooking condiments, and laundry essentials. Lori called to make sure everything was going well and communicated well with us before, during and after our visit. We have stayed at a half dozen "homeaway" locations and would rank this home at the top of the list. After a busy day at Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, there was nothing better than to begin and end our day at The Birches. We hope to return!

Lovely Wooded Retreat

The Birches is a wonderful, relaxing and spotless place to make your home while in Maine. My husband and I felt quite at home and it was cleaner than several four star hotels we have stayed in. The central location of the house was great with easy access to any place on the island and Acadia Park has to be the most beautiful National Park I have ever seen. I rate it as high as Yellow Stone! Lorie is a great host and it is very obvious that she has given a lot of thought to every detail. Boiling our own lobsters was great fun and delicious; Lorie made it possible by having everything we needed on hand (except the lobsters of course!) After sharing our experiences with my grown daughter she has decided to start planning a similar trip for her and her family. I would also highly recommend this rental to others.

Peaceful Retreat

The photos don't tell the whole story. The "Birches" was just wonderful. Clean, modern, and so quiet and peaceful. We felt right at home as soon as we walked in. Lorie was great to work with and she has done a beautiful job of decorating the house. After being on vacation for a period of time you really will enjoy being able to utilize the kitchen and not eat out for every meal. We stayed 5 nights and ate in 3 evenings. Of course we had to eat at Jordan Pond House one evening (having a reservation was helpful because we had 7 in our party). Best lobster: Trenton River Bridge Lobster Pound. Best blue berry pie: Riverside Cafe in Ellsworth. A must side trip should be the harbor town of Camden. Great little restaurants and gift shops. We went to Bass Harbor lighthouse, but it was not as nice as the Quaddy Head lighthouse in Lubec.
For the outdoorsman you can't pass up stopping in at LL Bean in Freeport. Ellsworth has an LL Bean outlet but the stock is limited.
The whole coastline is such a change from our landlocked Lexington, Kentucky. We recommend highly staying at "The Birches" and plan to return.

Truly a home away from home

We felt right at home at "The Birches". The house was lovely: super clean; well-maintained and with lots of lovely extras (i.e. fluffy towels etc.). The pictures don't do the place justice because one doesn't see how friendly the setting is and how well equipped the house is. We like to cook and were happy to find great pots and pans and every cooking utensil we needed.
We were able to reach Lorie, the owner, with every question or request and she was extremely helpful.
The house is in an ideal location and I would highly recommend it!
Owner's Response: I always say... that you can get all the best information from these reviews! My guests mention things that I just take for granted and it shows me that all those details (that I dream about all night!) DO make a difference.

When Matt mentioned the pots and pans that is a perfect example-I like to cook and I want each guest to be able to do it with ease if they want to. You can save a lot of money cooking at home and if you use some good local stuff...fresh seafood and fresh produce...you can make your tummy very happy, too!

The season is winding down now and I will use the next few months to think of new items that I can add to THE BIRCHES so that it will be even more satisfying for the 2012 Season.

If you are thinking of visiting Acadia National Park and want a comfortable and complete rental that you can call "home base" we can surely satisfy you with one of our 3 vacation rentals. My goal is to make you want to come back again and again!
