Pondside Cottage is a perfect place to call home while you explore the hidden gems on the Hamakua Coast and artisan farms in the Ahualoa community.
Pondside Cottage is situated on a five-acre property that used to be a honey bee farm for twenty years. We recently sold the business and converted the education building into Pondside Cottage.
The cottage has one spacious bedroom with sitting area, an old education room with a country style kitchen area, a dining room, a bathroom and a large open deck.
The bedroom itself is about 300 sq ft with a queen size bed, a pull out couch, a small table and chairs, and a TV & DVD player to enjoy a movie after a day of exploring. There is also wireless and cable internet in the room.
Both the bedroom and dinning room has large glass sliding doors that open to a large deck and overlook a lily pond. You can also see a few bee hives at a distance.
If you so desire, Richard (30 years a professional beekeeper) can provide you a 2 hour tour experiencing the workings inside a living beehive. Right outside your room. ($60

Beautiful Waipio Valley Lookout, the most visited place on Big Island, second only to Volcano. Waipio Valley itself is accessible by 4-wheel drive or shuttle bus from the Waipio Valley Lookout. Down in the valley there is a black sand beach with a stream flowing across the beach out to the ocean. Waipio is a great surfing spot and has a couple hiking trails. One of the trails winds its way back to a waterfall. Another trail is a challenging day hike or can be expanded to a backpacking hike that takes you into another valley with a wilderness campground.
There are plenty of options to tour in and above this beautiful valley - a mule drawn wagon tour, horseback riding tour or ATV tour for those looking for more adventure. For the energetic visitors, you can also hike down into the valley which is not difficult. The challenge is coming back up from the bottom.
A scenic drive down the Hamakua Coast gives you views of beautiful waterfalls and coastline. Historic Hilo town is 43 miles down the Hamakua Coast. Hilo is a beautiful old town that still has centuries old wooden storefronts – many of which are on the National Register of Historic Places.
A stroll down the Hilo's Banyen Drive is not to be missed. This majestic, banyan tree-lined street at the shoreline of Hilo Bay is known as the 'Hilo Walk of Fame' for the banyan trees planted by celebrities, including Franklin D. Roosevelt, Richard & Pat Nixon, Amelia Earhart, and many other important individuals, including religious leaders and politicians both from Hawaii and around the world. These trees have withstood several tsunamis and spread their broad canopies near the edge of the shoreline. It is a pleasant walk under the shade and incredible beauty of these trees and view of the ocean. your stroll can continue into classic example of an authentic Japanese garden that is enjoyed by both locals and visitors.
About 26 miles in the other direction (northwest) towards Kona is Hapuna Beach, one of the most beautiful and accessible beaches on the island.
