Libby purchased this cottage in 2011
We had been planning on moving to the Big Island for years. We looked to purchase a home in various locations and we are so happy to be in Kaloko. It seems like a world away, yet we are so close to everything. A short drive and we can be dining on the beach. Its like being on another island...so cool!
I had meant to write to you guys after we left the big island but time
got away from me... just wanted to say how happy we are to have met
you two and what a wonderful time we had at the cottage! Thank you so
much for your hospitality and for hanging with us! Hope to see you
Only downside, or upside depending on your taste, is distance from town. Otherwise, nice people, nice place, and great price.
Upon arrival I was greeted by a small group of native forest birds and Peter who showed me around the cottage and garden. Libby and Peter thought of everything you may need for your vacation and offer it in their cottage. there are bathroom amenities (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, sewing kit, aloe lotion, beach towels and a lot of bath towels), kitchen supplies of pots, pans, spices and good local coffee with sugar and creamer, and even beach chairs and a cooler for your day at the beach. Both their king and queen size beds were so comfortable and the sheets were so soft that it was difficult to leave for work. Lots of pillows on both beds. The large living room area has enough seating for a family and the direct TV will keep everyone entertained while staying in the cottage. The best part was sitting in the yard looks at the old ohia trees. So beautiful! Libby and Peter truly make you feel welcomed in their home. And the yummy mac nut candy was a special treat. I would definitely same again when visiting the kona side. Kaloko Cottage offers a quiet, cool place to relax and unwind after a fun-filled day of sightseeing.
Driving onto the property felt like when I see Hobbiton in the Lord of the Rings, the irresistible longing to dive into the picture CS Lewis style. As you enter the property you look down across beautiful landscaping to a cozy country home and a cottage nestled under the trees. The owners, Peter and Libby, come out and give you a warm, genuine welcome, make you feel at home as they show you around the 1200 sq ft cottage. They've put thought and care into their tenants' needs, from supplying many unexpected things (see other reviews), to planting shrubs and installing fencing for tasteful privacy between the cottage and their home. They've also clearly put in hours of heart and sweat, coaxing paradise out of the scraggy, crumbly lava rock everyone on this island has to work with. Added perks for me - the higher you go up the hill, the cooler the temperature at night and the more isolated you feel. This is a huge plus for someone who can't fall asleep to the sound of traffic (me) or the hum of air conditioners (me again), and who loves the sounds that should be there - crickets, bird songs, very occasional dog bark. Coming 'home' (how quickly it feels like home) to cool, misty evenings was a delicious contrast to the heat at the beach or on hikes. Staying with Libby and Peter you will feel that you're not just being touristy but getting a peek at what life on this island might be like. You might find yourself wondering about real estate next door. I defy you to dislike this place - not possible.
My husband and I had a great stay at this cottage. Its beautiful, spacious and very well supplied. I agree with the other reviews that report this has everything you need. From flashlights, sewing kits, spice rack in the kitchen to shampoo and shower gel in the bathroom. Owners are super friendly and gave us a tour around the property - including the incredible chameleon couple in their trees! The fire place was fantastic as we were actually a little chilly in the evenings! It would be nice to have a dryer, but they do have a clothes line. We stayed at a few property rentals throughout the islands, and this was both of our favorites.
The Kaloko Cottage was exactly we expected or more than we expected. We slept peacefully in the comfortable king bed with the clean and crisp sheets and pillows in the spacious cool and quiet room. It is located at 2,400 feet - 10 degrees cooler than the beach, and yet conveniently located, being close to Kailua-Kona, beaches and the Kona airport. If you're into strenuous exercises, walk/run the Kaloko-Hao loop with numerous steep hills. Peter, who picked two avocados for us, and Libby are friendly, personable, accommodating, and informative - wonderful folks. The cottage is meticulously equipped with everything, including a flash light and a sewing kit, you need. We were able to watch the Super Bowl on the big TV set, feeling at home. Life was very good there!
We had a wonderful stay. The Kaloko house is an ideal design, spatious and open. The quiet setting was perfect for us. We would be very happy to stay again. Thank you for a wonderful stay and for being such great hosts.
