nice little cottage

  • 4 of 5

We came up to meet some friends hiking thru on the trail and stayed 3/20/15-3/23/15. I have to say some of the critiques of this place in other reviews didn't reflect our experience and seemed a little unfair. The house looked and smelled very clean. My fiance has a very sensitive nose and we both have asthma and allergies and we had absolutely no problem with must or mold. It is an old cottage with a lot of character and we found it very cute and cozy and what we got for the price was totally reasonable. It seemed that some renters were trying to compare with a 4 star hotel room which is not at all appropriate. Apples and oranges. I grew up in old houses and have really learned to apprecite them. The only suggestion I would have is that it may be time to replace the linoleum in the bathroom again. I know from experience that its really hard to keep the floor dry under a clawfoot tub because that original copper tubing tends to leak a little so linoleum does tend to deteriorate pretty quickly under them. But since the bathroom was cleaned very well, it was a minor cosmetic issue. Hot tub was very private behind partition and not visible from road or other houses. The water was nice and hot and with good jets. The short walk to town was convenient. I enjoyed sitting on the front porch and watching hikers come into town. The house is close to the main road coming into town (which is part of the Appalachian trail) but its such a quiet little town that there is no worry about noise and traffic. There's also a nice view of the mountains from the porch and can also see a little bit of a mountains from the hot tub. We also had fun relaxing inside the house watching tv and playing board games. We were so happy to find 'Upwards' in the closet. The living room couch is super comfortable and could easily be another great place to sleep. Owner Melanie was very attentative. Overall- good value for the price. Charming and cute little place.

Great cottage, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful home away from home! The house is charming and spacious, and the location is amazing (and so is the hot tub!). During our three night stay, we hiked parts of the Appalachian Trail, ate at some great restaurants in Hot Springs, took a day trip to Asheville (about a 40 minute drive), and enjoyed a soak in the natural hot springs. This house would be perfect for a couple or a small group, and the owners were very responsive and accommodating. Gorgeous mountain scenery, a wonderful little town, and a great place to lay your head at night: what more could anyone ask for?

We will definintely be staying at this location on our next trip to Hot Springs and would highly recommend this property.

Some positives, some negatives

  • 2 of 5

We rented this cottage for four days and feel that there are some pros and cons to this rental.

Pros: The owner is really nice and pleasant to work with, the cottage is literally right on the Appalachian Trail, and is located less than 1/2 mile from Hot Springs. We enjoyed walking into town for dinner and Hot Springs has a couple of nice restaurants.

The reason for the 2-star rating is the cons overwhelmed the pros. Some of this is within the control of the owner, some is not. Hot Springs has a small downtown with a couple of shops and restaurants that are really nice. Otherwise, Hot Springs is a poor area and not the most pleasant vacation location. The cottage is good for some weary travelers coming off the AT but definitely not for those who are used to more luxurious cabins. We ended up having to leave a day early because the cottage is so musty that it bothered us (it didn't help that it was raining the whole time we were there). When we came home, we had to wash all of our clothes and bathe our dogs because we had absorbed so much of the mustiness. The oven is too old to use (excluding the burners) and the bathroom is barely functional. The hot water only allows enough time for one person to shower and there were three of us. Also, the owner does not drain and clean the hot tub after each rental so the hot tub is heavily chlorinated and a little on the gross side (we used it the first night but never again as there was a previous guests hair in the tub).

In conclusion, this is a great rental if you enjoy rustic and can overlook some of the issues that come with an old house. If you are used to a little bit more luxury, then look somewhere else.

Owner's Response: Thanks for commenting on Trailside Cottage's best features; directly on the Appalachian Trail, outdoor hot tub and a short walk to town. Trailside Cottage and Hot Springs, NC is as advertised, 'step back in time' and 'rustic town', just what some folks are looking for. Trailside offers all the comforts of home and more than you would have found originally had including wi-fi, satellite TV, dishwasher, air conditioning and outdoor hot tub. We have complemented this property to reflect the character of the cottage as well as the town, Appalachian Trail and river activities. The oven is apartment size with four burners but works perfectly. We are attentive to the hot tub and keep it in perfect balance, with a four person hot tub/400 gallons of water, you could not check in at 3 PM and use it for 30 hours while the water heated. Trailside is climate controlled with a heat and air unit, I checked the property for HVAC malfunction and found none nor high humidity in the unit. So sorry, I have no control over the weather. Many folks admire the beauty of the clouds and rain-fog rolling down the French Broad River and mountain peaks, nature's ever changing artwork.

Trail side cottage

We absolutely loved the location. So close to town. Much better than a hotel. We had privacy and it really felt like home. Everything you could need in the kitchen. Hot tub was amazing! We loved the local restaurants. We even had someone pay for one of our meals as an anonymous Christmas gift! Will definitely be back. Great hiking trails and nature exploration.

The bathroom could use updating, but otherwise this is a very nice rental. House was clean and convenient to town and trails.

Owner's Response: Glad you found our Trailside Cottage. Everyone loves that this porperty is right on the Appalachian Trail yet close enough to walk to town. This 1940's cottage has the clawfoot tub/shower combination which makes a quaint shower but not modern. We are always looking to improve the comfort of our properties while maintaining the integrity. Thanks for your wonderful review and suggestions.
