Melanie Prater purchased this cabin in 1991

Why Melanie Prater chose Hot Springs

Our family purchased this property as a second home, magical getaway in beautiful Hot Springs, NC. We loved the area so much we now call Hot Springs home. We now offer this beautifully restored 1922 Arts & Crafts Chestnut Log cabin as a vacation rental for your special home away from home.

What makes this cabin unique

We fell in love with The Chestnut Log Cabin as it was an original 1922 Arts & Crafts home with a special feeling. Bonuses for us is the cabin is directly on the Appalachian Trail and walking distance to town with a wonderful rocking chair front porch. New! Secured wi-fi!

Family of six

  • 3 of 5
The cabin was not as clean as I would have liked. The outlet for the coffee maker kept tripping, and I had to plug it in another area. The dishes were not very clean. Found peanut butter still on knife and plate. The cabin was right off the main road. Plenty of room for all. The cabin was charming, and the owners were very nice on the phone. She did mention that the microwave oven was not working and there was none in the cabin. The refrigerator was leaking water from the freezer to the bottom part, and they had placed towels to absorb that. Our ice-cream did not stay frozen, in spite of turning it to the coldest. Overall, we made it work and I had brought my cutting board, knives and a few of my spatulas. We cleaned the kitchen well before leaving. The house really needs good cleaning. It will be a great cabin if the kitchen had a little more of the essentials.

Owner's Response: So glad the cabin worked for your family of six and it is good to know there was plenty of room. We have recently added the single be futon sleeper in the sun room which has helped out for larger groups. There were several mysteries going on with the coffeemaker and microwave. As it turns out, it must have been time for everything to be replaced. I apologize that it happened at the same time and during your visit. I encourage guest to let us know if they need anything while they are here and give us a chance to correct anything we have within our power. We have installed a new coffeemaker, new microwave and replaced the ground fault outlet for the toaster and coffeemaker. As for the refrigerator, we had the electrician check it out and it is fine. I have checked and rechecked and it freezes ice cubes and has kept ice cream frozen, even on setting 2. When a guests mentions they will be cooking a lot, I recommend if they are a gourmet cook and have special knives and a favorite skillet they may want to bring them. Otherwise Chestnut Log Cabin is very well appointed kitchen, well beyond basic essentials. Full set of cookware, two skillets, 2 cookie trays, muffin tin, colander, dishes, utensils, glassware, barware, can opener, knives, tea kettle, cooking spatulas, etc. I am always glad to get opinions and suggestions from guests and continue to make our properties a mountain retreat you want to return to time and again.

What a great get away!! Relaxing and refreshing!

  • 5 of 5
Love this small town atmosphere. This is our third time at Chestnut Log Cabin and we enjoyed the new wifi system. Best for us is that we can park the car for the duration and walk to town or jump on the Appalachian Trail for an afternoon hike! As a cook the kitchen is well stocked with cookware, breakfast on the front porch is always a treat and no a tradition. Thanks to the friendly owners who are wonderful to share this special cabin.

We got away to the mountains and this cabin was just the absolute winner! Easy walk to town and the taverns. This cabin was well kept and most comfortable. Loved the hot tub and the owners had the kitchen stocked with all the pots and pans we needed. Just didn't want to leave, we will be back.

Owner's Response: It was nice to meet you and so glad Chestnut Log Cabin and Hot Springs exceeded your expectations. It's good to hear a real cook had everything they needed in the kitchen (except the food, of course!) Please come again and stay longer!

Spa Visit

  • 2 of 5
Thought the village of Hot Springs was quaint and lovely. We appreciate that Melanie allowed us to just stay the one night. The cabin has a lot of quaint mountain potential, however, it is in serious need of a deep cleaning. There was a lot of dust and many spider webs and spiders. It is also in need of some TLC. The crumbling plaster is not a charming quality and we found several places on the walls that appear to be some sort of mold. We felt it could be the lack of a/c that is allowing high humidity. Not really what we expected.

Owner's Response: We were glad to accommodate you for the one night as your request fell between reservations. Thanks for alerting me to the spiders, I checked and the pest service was overdue and now has been administered. Since acquiring this historic property 14 years ago we have updated and restored without taking away from the original structure. What you see in the floors and Arts and Crafts detail woodwork are original to the 1920 structure (Wow! almost 100 years old!) and we are so grateful the featured woodwork was never painted nor carpets nailed to the original floors. Our approach has been to remove any loose plaster and leave the character. Please return for another spa visit soon.

Like stepping back in time!

  • 4 of 5
Quaint cabin with hot tub out back. Felt like we were in the middle of the woods but were actually on the road/trail 5 minutes from town. The cabin has wonderful antique light fixtures and features unique to the era it was built. The owners are super!! brought an extra key when I locked myself out and also accommodated some last minute changes to our reservation with no problem and a great attitude. Book this cabin, you'll love 'stepping back in time'!!

Beautiful old house in walking distance from downtown Hot Springs!

  • 4 of 5
This cool house was used for 7 women to spend a weekend in Hot Springs. There was room for all of us to sleep, and despite the "bed" in the living room being a futon, it was very comfortable for two! However, with that many people using the bathroom at all hours, it was difficult to sleep in the living room. Also, the bathroom door lock didn't work to keep the door shut, so privacy was a tiny issue for some. The hot tub was great for 4 people at a time, but after a couple hours, it cooled off and didn't warm up the rest of the night, even with the lid closed after each use. The privacy around the hot tub in the back yard is great and the driveway easily held three cars. During the night, something on the outside of the house was banging against the wall, but I didn't look for a culprit. The front screen door needs a latch to keep it from opening and closing in the breeze, but the front porch is lovely and was used to practice banjo on! Kitchen had almost everything we needed to make a big dinner huge brunch - just lacked a big pot, but we made it work. All in all, we had a great time and took advantage of being so close to dinner and stores. I would definitely recommend this to anyone staying in Hot Springs.

Owner's Response: Your girls getaway is part of a growing trend with The Chestnut Log Cabin. I agree, seven girls to one bathroom is pushing it and we actually have 6 as the maximum guests but others, like your group, have made this property the perfect getaway! Please make The Chestnut Log Cabin your annual mountain retreat.
