The location of Barcadere provides a perfect example of the Brac's diverse shoreline. A short path from the house leads to a small cove called the Barcadere, (how the house got it's name) carved out of the molten lava rock by the Caribbean Sea. The cove is about 12x30 feet and 10 feet deep and is protected from the ocean’s waves. A swimming pool ladder provides an easy entrance and exit for snorkeling, diving or just swimming for all ages. Two sea-pools surge in rhythm, each supporting a unique set of aquatic inhabitants, connected by underwater channels to the Barcadere. You’ll notice the sound of the shore itself, gurgling, softly resonating under you, literally breathing with the sea. The magic of this porous shoreline begins.
To the west the expansive, easy to stroll solid rock shore leads you to a larger, wilder cove powering the blow holes where the seas are funneled under the rock to erupt in wave geysers, sometime 20’ high! Further on, the shore adds sand and shells for beach-combing, and then finally to a rare, natural pure sand beach where sea turtles lay their eggs each year.
To the east the shore offers tidal pools and an easy walk to the cut, a man made inlet cut into the ironshore. Originally created to shelter boats, this natural saltwater 'swimming pool' is now used by swimmers, snorkelers and divers to access deepwater diving and snorkeling.
Directly in front of the house, approximately 100 yards off shore, is the coveted dive site of the Captain Keith Tibbitts...a Russian frigate sunken to provide an exceptional artificial reef. It is only diveable Russian military sunken vessel in the Western Hemisphere. In addition, about 50 yards to the left of the Barcadere is another sunken vessel used as a diving/snorkeling destination, with an abundance of sea life, including sting rays, sea turtles and multitudes of coral reef fish.
In the evening just sit back on the patio and catch the most wonderful sunsets you will ever see. Each one unique with the various tropical cloud formations that illuminate the sky in reds, pinks and purples until it eventually succumbs to total darkness, illuminating the solar system in a spectacular way.
This special property is very handy to the airport, grocery store, gift shops, restaurant, bank, liquor store and doctors' offices. Like to explore? Go to the bat caves, take the parrot walk, find ‘Blackfoot’, our neighborhood iguana, check out the light house on the bluff where you might have a sighting of the brown booby bird, hike up and into Peter's Cave where islanders went to survive the great hurricane of 1932, or go to the recreation park just a few minutes’ walk from the house. The area offers an abundance of natural wonders sure to delight guests of all ages.
The house has been privately enjoyed by our family since 1978. It has recently been completely refurnished and refitted to make your visit easy! The set-up is simple, you begin to unwind as soon as you cross the threshold. Our island born partner Derwin meets your flight. He can prearrange your vehicle needs so your car will be waiting. The house is spotless, the linens fresh, the kitchen is equipped with all the utensils needed, connected to a great room with spectacular panoramic views.

First the booking was so easy and helpful! We will be back! If you ever want to feel like you're on your own little island...this is how private it feels. Everything was clean! Well equipped. The only thing we missed was a TV for news and weather but did have good internet! Coconut and the lime tree was awesome! Rock shore was beautiful! We had bad weather...so not much diving. Did shore dive to Keith Tibbets, sweet shore dive. Everything close in! Star Island restaurant up the road..best keylime pie ever! The 2nd floor master suite had the most spectacular view and was HUGE and roomy. Outdoor shower was fun and convenient. If your looking for granite and pillow top and keurig, look elsewhere...if you're looking for small island tropic quiet comfortable and roomy...this is it. One note if you have small kids Rock shore may be tough for them and the bedrooms don't adjoin the main living area. On the other hand this set up affords great privacy! The 2 bedrooms down are joined by a small bathroom. The living dining kitchen are very roomy. Loved it
We are 3 ladies that vacation together once a year primarily for the diving and snorkeling. The house was perfect for us. We loved it and the location was great. We dove the Captain Tibbets which is off the shore of the rental and the snorkeling right out back was fantastic. If you are an underwater photographer then you will love this place. It has a ladder down into a protected cove filled with flamingo tounges, redlip blennies, corals, etc. When we were there in July there was a ball of silversides in the cove everyday. The dive shops are at this end of the island. We found this house to be an outdoor enthusiasts wonderland with the swimming cove, sea pools and blow holes. I wouldn't suggest it if you are more of a "resort" type because there isn't a sandy beach or a resort pool or resort type ameneties. The owner was a pleasure to rent from and Mr. Scott was wonderfully helpful. I would definately return and rent again.
Our vacation at the Barcadere was one of the most restful and rejuvenating vacations we have ever had. The raw beauty of the island and the simplicity is what attracted us and what will keep us coming back. The accommodations are so comfortable and private. We loved the visiting hens and chicks and the little lizards that dart in and out of the rocks. The diversity of the coast line in different areas of the island was amazing to see. It was a short trip to find the caves and the swimming in the cove at the Barcadere was so much fun. Every bit of the description of this place on the website is 100% accurate. We saw a good size Stingray one day and some type of illuminating algae late one night when we ventured down to the cove. We’ve taken pictures and recorded the sounds so we can look and listen when we need a little Barcadere “fix”.
A fairly large Swedish Cruise ship came and dropped anchor right near us one day. What a day of entertainment that was. The comings and goings of passengers and to see and meet some when we went food shopping was a trip. Took some great pictures that day especially as they sailed off into the sunset. The only way I can express how much we enjoyed our visits there is to say
“ I can’t wait to go back, but for longer …. Much longer ….”
We stayed at the Barcadere for about two weeks in March and have thoroughly enjoyed our time there. It is one of the best places in the Caribbean if you are looking for a laid-back style of vacation. There is not a lot of 'touristy' things to do on the island, but we filled up all our time with swimming, snorkeling, and exploring.
First of all, we would like to thank Joanne for her quick and comprehensive communication, as well as for the complimentary car she provided.
The cottage itself is close to pretty much everything you may need for a short reside. We found plenty of clean towels and bedding, which met and exceeded our needs. Three separate bedrooms with three separate entrances was more than enough for the three of us. The sea breeze helped to cool down the upper bedroom so you don’t need to turn on air conditioning every night, but it is nice to know you have it just in case mosquitoes show up (which never happened in our stay anyways). We appreciated the well equipped large kitchen and living room, though we spent most of the time outside on the terrace soaking up the sunlight, barbecuing, and watching breathtaking sunsets over Little Cayman. We have been pleased with the small to nonexistent disturbance from neighbors and the public strolling down the shore.
A local black and white cat kept us company. After realizing there is food to be had, it became very friendly and accompanied us for the whole time. When you go to the Barcadere say “Hello” to it from us.
Our favorite activity was snorkeling. It was the best feature of the house because we had easy access to the water right from the entrance. As well, the house had its own private lagoon outfitted with a ladder -- even when the ocean is quite rough, you can still descend safely into the relatively calm lagoon. Unsurprisingly, the Brac is cited to be the diving Capital of the World. There are two sunken ships within swimming distance, but watch out for boats. Water quality was exceptional, as was the variety of underwater life. Huge barracudas made us nervous, so make sure you are not wearing jewelry while swimming. If you like swimming off a sandy beach, you may need to drive ten minutes to the other side of the island. You may also want to drive to see sunrise over “brac” at the east end of the island and check out parrot reserve half way down the road.
Thanks to Joanne, her family and Derwin for the warm hospitality and generosity!!!
Comfortable, clean -great vacation spot right on the water. Quiet, we all felt very safe and secure. Derwin met us at the airport and addressed any issues that we had, which were few and very minor (a clogged drain). The yard was beautifully kept with comfortable lawn furniture and entertaining decorations. The house was well stocked with games for entertainment. The beds were comfortable, and the house was clean and well kept. Having use of the car was a real bonus! For scuba divers, the wreck of the Tibbetts is within swimming distance, and several dive sites are accessible close by, with great diving/snorkeling right out your front door. We most definitely plan to be back!
Words cannot fully describe the view this property has. Hands down it offers the best view on the island, especially at sunset. The property description and images were accurate. The rooms are spacious and the house is very clean. I loved the open living room, because it was the perfect place to cool down after a day of activities in the sun. The property has a sand area and the iron shore, which not all houses have to offer. There are also two sunken ships and multiple other amazing places to snorkel right off the shore of this property. The house does have a car, which is perfect for making trips to the market or around the island. I recommend snorkeling (the house has gear) and hiking. I loved staying here, it was the perfect vacation.
