Wonderful

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I, my oldest son and his two boys (3 and 6) had a delightful time in this wonderful home. We made use of the snorkel gear and used the both boogie boards on several occasions. The house was clean upon our arrival and the kitchen was well equipped for all our cooking needs.

The only thing I would have liked better is the back yard -- it is gorgeous but was very overgrown and I was not comfortable letting the boys play outside due to the spiders.

I would not hestitate to rent this home again and would recommend it to families with children. It is close to shopping, swimming, snorkeling and we enjoyed the tide pools across the street - easy access and wonderful sunsets.

Great space and location. A few things could have been better, though.

  • 4 of 5
The good stuff first: The house itself was just great and perfectly suited our family of four (kids ages 5 and 7). There was ample space to spread out and we made full use of it. The location was excellent since we love to snorkel and it was less than a 10 minute walk to Kahalu'u Beach Park which has great snorkelling. Right across the street from the house is a shoreline access trail which we made use of to watch sunsets and dip our feet in the water. The lack of solid windows in the house (screens only) was mostly very nice, bringing in fresh air and bird (and traffic) sounds. Bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper. One day there was heavy rain and wind, which blew papers and artwork around the house, as well as some wetness from the rain! The back yard is nice, but we didn't make use of it much due to mosquitoes or other things that bit our kids.

We would not rent from this owner again, however. First off, he provided us a completely wrong address for the house, so when we arrived late, in the dark, it took us a long time to find the right house. This cost us an extra $20 in taxi fare, and a lot of unneeded stress upon arrival. The only way we found the right place was because I had read a lot of reviews and descriptions before we left, and then managed to find the house on Google street view - so I finally recognized it when I got the driver to slow down at the right spot. The owner apologized briefly in an email, but made no extra effort to make up for his mistake, or to compensate us in some way. Also, they provide dish detergent and Zest soap in the bathrooms but no laundry detergent "because guests have different tastes and allergies, etc." They claim to have beach gear, but that consisted of one very tired boogie board and assorted snorkel gear. When we enquired about a second boogie board, he replied that another guest must have left it somewhere and did not replace it. He was generally inflexible and not interested in providing excellent service. Too bad, since the house was great.

If you stay here, be sure to check out the lovely, low-key Saturday morning farmers' market at the Keauhou Shopping Center - this is also home to the nicest KTA supermarket in Kona, as well as some decent shops and restaurants. Sunsets and happy hour are nice at Sam Choy’s above the shopping center.

Great house. Central location for all island exploring. Very roomy. Everything you need and then some. Close to Ali'i Drive, but noise was not a problem. Only downfall, and it was not big at all, was it could get a bit stuffy when no breeze was blowing during the middle of the day.

True Island Style in a Great Location

  • 5 of 5
Everything about this house made us feel so at home, so welcome and cared for, so relaxed!

When we arrived it was clean, fresh, and inviting, and the rooms are really large! Big kitchen, big living room, big bedrooms, big lanais. This house has a wonderful, open, spacious quality. There is plenty of room for the family to spread out and each one do his/her own thing, yet the house also has a really warm, friendly, family feeling, with many comfortable gathering spaces. The manager, Teri, obviously puts a lot of TLC into the house, and her guests, too. You can really feel the "Aloha."

The house is located on Ali'i Drive, about mid-way between La'aloa (Magic Sands) and Kahalu'u. You can go a short distance toward the center of Kailua town for great swimming, body surfing, and sunning at Magic Sands Beach, or you go a short distance in the other direction for fantastic snorkeling. It is also convenient to a couple different farmer's markets, and all the activities in Kailua town, including the many restaurants and shops and some historic and cultural sites.

One of the things I enjoyed most about staying here was walking right across the street every morning with my coffee to dip my toes in the tidal pools enjoy the sunshine on the ocean.

The house has no glass windows, just screens, so you can enjoy the ocean breezes and the fragrant flowers. I really liked it. You can hear some street noise -- probably true anywhere in the area -- but the location is much less noisy than being in the center of town with all the nightlife. We did not find the street noise obtrusive at all, just noticeable at first. We all slept really well! The house has a very soothing, laid back atmosphere.

There is a game room, with a pool table and a bar. With all the spacious rooms and lanais, this house would make a great place for a special family gathering or event.

Island Living at its best

  • 5 of 5
Centrally located. Far enough away from the tourism in Kailua Village, but still close enough to enjoy (eating at Kona Brewery, Super Js, Boston Basil (for the Big Island Pizza) and Rapanui).

Beach access across the street is wonderful for beach combing and gorgeous sunsets (everyday we watched locals get into the water there and go spear fishing). Laaloa (Magic Sands) close by. Walked to Kahaluu several times to enjoy the Honu.

House is completely screened in, which my Kupuna couldn't have loved more. The master bedroom was perfect for them, as my Grandma was able to sleep 'inside' while my Kupuna enjoyed sleeping on the lanai. I slept in the front room near Ali'i. A little noisy, in the evenings, but it is so beautiful, it didn't bother me. My mom slept in the back/game room and we had several laughs over the coconuts that fell in the middle of the night onto the roof. There were several televisions, but no one ever turned one on, there was to much to keep busy doing, we also never played pool.

The jeweled gecko sunned on the fence and begged for breakfast in the morning out on the lanai. The yard provided most of our breakfast: papaya, coconut and mangos. The farmers market at Ali'i Gardens provided the coffee, bananas and pineapple. We sat every night at the table inside and ate Roselani ice cream to wind down from the day.

DON'T MISS CLOSE BY:
• Holuakoa Cafe in Holualoa about 20 minutes away, and a nice stroll in their local artist village.
• If you go down to Volcano (a two hour drive) stop in Na'alehu at the Flyin' Hawaiian Coffee Truck for the most incredible Ka'u coffee mocha!
• Hulihee Palace, the guided tour is worth taking a few minutes out if you have any interest in Kanaka Maoli downtown Kailua Village
• Check the calendar to see if Kokua Kailua is going on (music and art festival held every month)
• Pu'uhonua o Honaunau (City of Refuge) and St. Benedict's (The Painted Church), just don't go on Wednesday, the cruise ship comes in that day and the tour buses swarm both sites
• There are dozens of sacred sites, heiau, holua slides close by that if you are interested in local history

Terri was a great host. If we stay again before buying a house, we would definitely stay again, and once we move, I would recommend this house for family to stay in while visiting.

Mahalo nui loa.

Beautiful place to stay

Kona was so wonderful and the house was just what we needed. All the screened windows really brought the beautiful feeling inside, and Teri was a wonderful caretaker of the home. The game room really made it great with the teenagers. They were never bored. Thanks so much
