12 years ago, I was a wide-eyed 1st time American traveler to Florence. Call me crazy, but I purchased this condo during my 10 day stay. It was vacant & needed a complete overhaul - so a bit like 'Under The Tuscan Sun' - but not so dramatic.
I just knew it was the right thing to do & I have no regrets.
Now, I'd like to share my home & experience with others. Because I have lived here; I am able to help you with tours selections & restaurant tips, etc.
I am happy to help make your dream vacation a reality.
Boun Viaggio! Travel well!
Susan Fletcher purchased this condo in 2001
There is only 1 Florence in the world, a renaissance (art revival) phenomena where you walk the streets knowing that many greats (Dante, Michelangelo, Gallilaeo, DaVinci) did the same. Life comes before work, good food, coffee, style & culture are treasured!
Forget about your 'To Do' list and simply enjoy your life after you accomplish 1 thing in the morning & 1 thing in the afternoon. Basta cosi - so this is enough!
The building in which my apartment resides was built in the 1500's - older than the USA - get your head around that!
As old as the building is I am so sorry to say there isn't an elevator. I am on the 5th floor. The stairs steps are evenly spaced with landings to take a breath. Very much worth the climb I am told. Only 10% of the buildings in Florence have elevators. Hotels are an exception but you will still have some steps has been my experience. A hotel is a very different experience, however.
Parades! Everyone loves a parade. Next to my building is the Home of the Guelfa's! Whereby formal traditions are still carried out today for us to enjoy when this prominent family lived in the 1500's. Period costumes with yes; men in tights, flags, trumpets & drums! They celebrate everything from the oil & grape harvest to All Saints Day & every holiday & religious activity you can imagine.
Tourists flock to get a glimpse & take pictures. I very seldom have guests that don't experience this event.
Need fresh fruit or a 'Smoothy' - Paolo (The Fruit Stand Guy') has his stand just outside the front door. Paolo is there from April - November weather permitting.
We were 4 lady friends who spent 5 night's in Susan's beautiful apartment. The location was perfect! You can walk to all the wonderful historical sights in Florence, the shopping/markets and great restaurants. The apartment itself was fabulous. Two bedrooms and two baths for 4 people was perfect. The pictures do not give the living area justice. The living room is large, comfortable, and furnished beautifully. Wonderful place to relax with a glass of wine after a busy sight seeing day. Kitchen had all you would need to cook but we ate out. Susan was a great source of information, easily accessible, and made the whole Florence experience perfect. We would highly recommend Susan's apartment and can not thank her enough for helping us create the vacation of a life time.
Our experience in Florence was perfect! We exchanged emails with Susan prior to our arrival and she was wonderful in helping with some of our pre-arrival questions. There are over 100 stairs but they are spaced out and there are landings along the way. We had no issues climbing the stairs and you can easily pace yourself.
The apartment was spotless and very clean. Susan met us upon our arrival to review the amenities in the apartment. The kitchen is a nice size and having a dishwasher and washer/dryer were definitely plus for us. We were pleasantly surprised with the American coffee and coffee maker! The beds and pillows were very comfortable. Bathrooms were very spacious and appreciated the large bath towels and the blow dryer! Overall, this is a nice size apartment and it includes free Wi-Fi which allowed us to stay connected.
Location of the apartment was perfect. Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery, and the Duomo, Bell Tower, and Baptistery were all within easy walking distance. The train station was about a 10 minute walk. Easy walk to Conad’s and the Central Market to buy groceries. Plenty of gelato options too!
Susan made our taxi reservation for our departure and checked in with us during our stay to see if we had any questions. Overall this was a great experience and Susan was a remarkable host. I strongly recommend this apartment and would definitely stay here again if (when) we come back to Florence.
We (a retired couple) were in Florence to meet with our son, who was attending a conference there. The location was perfect for the three of us: a quick walk from the conference center and a leisurely stroll to almost anything one wants to see in Florence.
The apartment is exactly as pictured: it's airy, spacious, well-appointed and spotless. I even got a parade photo like Susan's out of the window.
The bathrooms were modern, sparkling clean and boasted an abundance of fresh towels. Susan is very generous with all the things that really matter -- like nice big towels and a LOT of them. The same about the kitchen: it is very, very well stocked compared to other Italian places we've rented and has the kinds of appliances (American coffee maker and coffee, washer & dryer) that are rare in southern European rentals.
I'm starting to sound like an ad so now for the negatives. The beds and linens were too nice. So nice in fact that I didn't need to use my trusted old pillow that I carry with me whenever we travel. I got so comfortable that I forgot I even had my pillow with me and left it behind, stashed in the closet. Now, that's too comfortable...
All in all, the only thing I have to disagree with in the previous reviews is the number of steps. There are 102 --not 101. Susan made sure to mention the steps ahead of time, and I honestly did not mind some automatic exercise to counteract all the great food eaten at places Susan recommended. Though the apartment is well worth the climb, it's good to remember the stairs e.g. when packing and leave e.g. the heavy exercise equipment, barbells and such, at home. There's this curious thing about suitcases: they get the heavier the higher one climbs. Something to do with the thin air and gravity, I suspect.
Thanks for everything -- hope to stay here again!
I am a single woman who wanted to stay in the heart of things in Florence and this apartment certainly fit the bill! It is two blocks from the Duomo, near the Artisan Market, a walk to the Ponte Vecchio and the Museums and close to all kinds of great shopping, including the Twin Set Store in which I spent an entire afternoon. Susan is kind and gracious. The bedroom was good sized, the closet space ample and the bathroom modern. She provided all the conveniences that I needed including advice on where to go. I had a lovely time and I am planning to go back in the fall.
We (a party of four seniors) just returned from a wonderful stay at Susan's apartment. It is spacious, comfortable, well equipped, and the location is superb. Susan is a very cheerful and helpful hostess. The one thing to be aware of is that the apartment is 101 steps up from street level, so it is a good idea to minimize departures during a given day. I have no hesitation recommending this as a great place from which to explore Florence.
The BEST of the 5 VBRO places we stayed on this trip. Susan made every effort to make our stay comfortable. Everything was spotless. Beds and linens were new and very comfortable. A remarkable washing machine that also dried our laundry which was welcome when we ran into some rain. We had a home away from home to explore this amazing city and then come back and rest, read, play cards and listen to music when we needed some down time. The kitchen was well stocked (including a dishwasher) and groceries were close by. WIFI was fast and efficient. Susan even went out of her way to keep us posted when one of the two bathrooms wasn't working perfectly and gave us an option of cancelling. We're so glad we didn't. One bathroom was more than sufficient and in no way inconvienced our family of 4. We loved spending Easter here. The parade started in the courtyard outside the building. We joined along and had our pictures taken with the patriachs of Florence!!! We'll never forget this trip. Thanks Susan for your gift of hospitality!!!!
The Easter Holiday in Florence is spectacular. 'Lo Scoppio del Carro' the exploding cart is significant in that a Florentine family which first arrive in Jerusalem during the crusade and was awared 'flints' from the tomb of Jesus. This cart is drawn by 4 oxen and stops in front of the center doors of the Duomo (cathedral) which are open during this event. The 4th of July like celebration includes a parade of antique dressed men & women carrying flags, arms & other significant items of that period. An event not to be missed in you are in Florence during Easter.
My apartment is within 2 minutes of walking to follow the parade to the Duomo. You can easily get a position early near the Duomo to see everything coming & going. In fact, the House of Guelfa (where the antique costumes and antique artifacts are housed) is next to the Palazzo housing my apartment. If there is a parade, you can view it from my living room. Who doesn't love a parade?
