Welcome to Heron Hideaway, a retreat with rustic elegance surrounded by trees and overlooking a large, spring-fed pond. If you enjoy listening to bird calls, or spotting woodland animals such as deer, turkey, red fox and an occasional blue heron, the Heron Hideaway awaits you.
This fully equipped guest cottage is located in Victor, NY, an area known for its four-season tourist attractions. We are located midway between the Finger Lakes wineries and the city of Rochester with its many cultural events. Both are a short driving distance away. Within minutes you can shop at a 250 store mall complex or hike the Victor Trail System.
The Heron Hideaway guest cottage and our home share a 5 acre wooded lot. The two bedroom cottage was completely refurbished in 2010 with hardwood floors and a modern kitchen and bath. The living room has earth tones, natural wood furnishing and simple comfort. We call this area the Upper Roost. In 2013 we added a third bedroom in the downstairs walk out basement. We call this room the Heron Room. The Heron Room with bunk beds, half bath and an entertainment center is only rented out when a third bedroom is needed to accommodate a total rental party of 5 or 6 individuals.
If you wish to talk with friends, write a book, paint a picture or just take a nap, you will find the Heron Hideaway a perfect place to enhance your feelings of well being. The scenic deck can be enjoyed year round and is often the spot for morning coffee and afternoon refreshment with friends. In the evening, the fire pit provides a cozy sitting area to relax before retiring.
If you feel the need for exercise, just grab the canoe with a lifejacket and paddle in our large 80 by 150 foot pond. Walking is a pleasure on our country roads where you will see farmland, horse farms, and drumlins. When you return you may wish to eat at a nearby restaurant or grill on the deck.
It is our pleasure to make your stay at the Heron Hideaway happy and comfortable. We are eager to offer you verbal and as well as written information on the wide variety of recreational and cultural possibilities available in the Finger Lakes region.
As a retired couple, we enjoy an active life style, which includes travel, outdoor sports and cultural activities. In the winter we cross country ski and in the summer we enjoy playing golf and sailing on Lake Ontario. We have travelled extensively in the US and abroad. We hope to make the Hideaway a welcoming and pleasant rest spot as you enjoy your travels.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2005
My husband and I built the guest home for my mother. She helped us raise our son and twin daughters. Since then family members and friends have lived in the Hideaway for short periods. Our son and one daughter live abroad. When they visit us with their young families, the Heron Hideaway is the perfect vacation spot for them. Within a 5 minute drive they can visit a playground, grocery store, favorite restaurant or shop in the area's largest mall.
Our guest house is located in a natural sanctuary providing a space for an individual retreat or social gatherings. Besides a family wedding and numerous birthday celebrations, the Heron Hideaway has hosted swimming, fishing, ice skating and star gazing parties. This idyllic setting has unlimited possibilities for enjoyment.
We absolutely loved our stay at the Heron Hideaway. This is our third HomeAway rental, and the owners obviously have spent time thinking about how to welcome guests with mirrors where they are handy, directions about how to work electronics, wood piles at the ready, and an immaculate and welcoming home. The view of the pond, trees, walking bridge, and even squirrels playing couldn't have been more perfectly scripted....we'll stay here again!
This was our second time staying in the Heron Hideaway. What a great house! We didn't want to leave at the end of our week. The house is so comfortable and user friendly, two adults and a 13 yo daughter had plenty of space to relax. Great location, easy place to launch day trips to all the lakes and local wineries. We even day tripped to Niagara Falls this time. If you've never been you should go at least once! For the mountain bikers that might be reading this review . . . bring your bike. There is a little place called Dryer Road Park nearby that offers technical single track and short downhill runs - well worth spending a couple hours. We hope to return again for stay number 3!!!
Looked at hundreds of vacation home rental listings in the finger lakes region that were so disappointing in their appearance and condition. When I happened upon the Heron Hideaway in Victor I knew I found something special. What a charming cottage! The pictures show the property very well and our stay met and exceeded our every expectation. Could not have been more clean or well maintained. Very comfortable for our young family- Sally & Gard had it ready with all the things infants and little people might need (crib, highchair, toys)- so glad we didn't have to lug all that on the airplane. Loved the green and being nested in the trees. My boys learned to fish for the first time on the pond with their dad, uncle, and grandpa. Was visiting the area to see family. Had everyone over for a bbq and my local family could't believe how great the cottage was. Most days were spent with family outings but we really just wished we had stayed at the cottage more. Plenty to do at the pond (swimming, canoeing, fishing. bonfire & hot cocoa) Sally and Gard were so accommodating and hospitable and we hope to make an autumn trip back someday. Also a great lodging choice for anyone on vacation visiting the LDS Church historical sites/ temple in Palmyra just 18 minutes away. Don't forget to stop by Chase Farms up the road for homemade strawberry shortcake- yum!
We try to plan a trip to upstate N.Y each year to visit with family and friends. Last year we found the Heron Hideaway when looking for accommodations and we loved it. (serene jewel review below)
This year we were so happy to be able to stay once again at the Heron where we can relax in comfort and style in such a beautiful setting. This little house is magical. After a long day of walking, talking, shopping, my 79 year old mother in law returned to the house with us for a cup of tea and before long fell asleep on the couch! This is the kind of place the Heron is. It just lulls you by being so comfortable and peaceful. The owners, Sally and Gard are so great to work with; answering emails, etc. They make it very easy to reserve and stay at the Heron. We will be back!!!!
We have rented many VRBO properties over the last 5 years from CO to FL, now into NY. Heron Hideaway ranks among one of the best places we've ever stayed. Super clean, kitchen incredibly stocked (even a crock pot!), and Sally was a joy to e-mail back and forth with. Victor is a great location to use as a starting point to explore the area. Wineries (and breweries) around the lakes, hiking, or strolling the local towns. We loved coming back to Heron Hideaway, sitting on the deck, looking over the pond, enjoying a glass on wine from one of the wineries we just visited. Very private and comfortable - and an excellent CD collection to explore as well. Thanks Sally and Gard - we'll be back!!
The Heron Hideaway is extremely clean, quiet and private. The deck overlooking the pond was great for early morning coffee or evening cocktails. The kitchen is well-equipped and we enjoyed being able to prepare meals and dine on site after eating restaurant food for several days previous to this stop. Gardner was also very helpful with providing local information for our day trips into the Finger Lakes Area, which was a pleasant drive from the Hideaway.
