Merida House Rental Photos and Description
Don’t just be a tourist. Live the Spanish-colonial life of old in your very own private hacienda that blends old-world charm with modern comfort.
Hacienda Mulsay de la Magdalena is a remarkable, historic 2.4 hectare property surrounded by a high stone wall with 1,000 m2 of antique buildings. Built on an ancient Mayan site, the hacienda was owned early on by Juan de Montejo y Maldonado, grandson of Francisco de Montejo El Mozo, founder of the city of Mérida.
Central to the property is the casona (plantation house), constructed in the 18th century at the height of opulence during the henequen boom. Untouched since this time, the building offers a treasure trove of original history to explore. Over the last half century the building has fallen to ruin, and is now being slowly restored by the the current owners.
Constructed of stone, it features 10 large rooms with tall ceilings some with ancient wooden beams. Magnificent terraces with colonial stone colonnades surround three sides of the main structure. At the center of the home is a large partially covered pool (not currently in use), reminiscent of a Roman bath house .
A short stroll along tree-lined pathways from the casona is the gatehouse, a lovingly restored two bedroom home surrounded by stone walls that create a shaded garden courtyard to relax.
A historic building in its own right, the gatehouse has been updated with all the conveniences of modern life. The renovated gatehouse comes with two air-conditioned bedrooms, a large fully equipped kitchen, plenty of indoor/outdoor living, and wireless high-speed internet.
Lush gardens and stately trees surround the property offering days to exploration.
A stay at Hacienda Mulsay provides an opportunity to experience the Spanish-colonial times of old at your own pace. Escape the modern world and inhabit a magical space lost in time. Breathe in the garden from the shaded colonnade of the main casona. Stroll the grounds and exploring the old ruins. Either way, you’ll be transported to a time where life was quiet and simpler.
