This is a beautiful, very private home copied from a Frank Lloyd Wright design and modified to provide convenience and openness. A terra cotta cinderblock garden wall, matching the house walls, provides privacy on the mountain side, forming a large courtyard and bringing out the beauty of our bougainvillea and other tropical flowers and gardens. The other side of the house and gardens are fenced for pets, including large or small dogs. Relax on our covered lanai with a drink and your loved ones and watch the Kona sunsets over the ocean.
Enjoy the fishing boat activities on the sea below. Look up the coast at the beautiful Kealakekua Bay. Watch the saffron finches and tropical Java sparrows at the bird feeders and listen to the sounds of the Hawaiian doves. Enjoy our 3 bedrooms, carpeted, with 2 king size beds and one double bed, each equipped with dressers and closets. Each bedroom has sliding glass doors that open onto pool deck.
Additional Details: The large living room has sliding glass doors on both sides to allow the breezes through. The house retains a perfect temperature all day, no fans or air conditioning needed, but on an exceptionally hot day there are ceiling fans in every room. During the cooler evenings we sometimes close the sliding doors on the mountain side. From the bedrooms or the living room you can listen to the garden fountain and watch the birds take baths. There are 55 Macademia nut trees on the 3 acres which is a small, older lava flow. We also have mango trees and citrus. A nut cracker is provided on one of the lanai tables.
More Information: The large table seats six and we eat dinner out there in the sunsets. Our pool is long enough for lap swimming, but wide enough for kids to play in. It is heated with a solar heating system. You can walk out of the house and jump right into the pool. Bathing suits are optional because there is a privacy wall from the neighbors who are far enough away that they couldn't see what you have on anyway.
When you finish your swim, relax in our large, blue hot tub which seats seven, with two jet settings and a little waterfall. You can experiment with the different color lights in the evenings. There is a red cement lanai all the way around the house, providing lots of room for your Scuba and snorkeling gear or pool toys.
Dave and Sally are newly retired teachers. We have taught in the Bay Area in California in a two room school, on Hornby Island in British Columbia, Canada, and here in Kona for the last 14 years. We also ran a group home for troubled teens in Victoria for six years. Dave runs a special program at Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona for teen age kids who have trouble with the larger campus, and Sally taught at the Elementary level at a private preparatory school in Kona, both in the classroom and PE and Music. We will be dividing our time between our home in Canada and our home here in Hawaii. We hope you enjoy our place.
We spent 10 glorious days at your property and were thrilled with the house and the location. The house had everything we needed and the view was spectacular. We were surprised to find what turned out to be arguably the best snorkeling/diving/swimming with dolphins spot on the Big Island just a few minutes down the road (Honaunau Bay). We loved hanging out by the pool on the lanai watching the sun set in the evenings and in the morning eating papaya from the fruit stand down the road. We had a truly restorative vacation and hope to return soon. Many thanks!!!
Dave and Sally's home is an oasis in tropical paradise. The 3 bedrooms have large patio doors that let in cooling breezes, and lead out to the pool and hot tub, and lanai. These areas all look out to the Pacific Ocean. The view is 180 degrees, unobstructed. No other houses can be seen when you are on the lanai! Fantastic sunsets! While enjoying meals on the lanai, enjoy the view, the tropical birds, and the lush vegetation. The house is designed with natural air conditioning, with patio doors on both sides, to allow air flow. The back lanai has a fountain that the birds like, too. The kitchen is well stocked, the linens nice, and beds comfie.
The house is well located for exploring Hawaii, and quite close to some really good snorkeling areas.
This is our fourth Hawaiian island to visit, and the most diverse. From the observatories on Mauna Kea to the lava fields of Kileaua, the surfers to the coffee farms, the charm of Hawi and Hilo to the action at Kailua, great golfing options and beautiful botanical gardens, zip lines and boat cruises.....the Big Island has it all!
If you are looking for a place to decompress that is "away from it all" look no further. Fantastic ranch house that has a pool with a view that pictures do not do justice. We wound up never doing any of the "touristy" sightseeing locations because it was so serene and beautiful just relaxing by the pool.
Sally was extremely responsive with information prior to, and during, our trip. We highly recommend checking out Up Country Bakery for breakfast (our favorite was the vegan pancakes and the Gandhi on Lava Salt bagel) located in the Coconut Grove "mall" and Annie's Burgers for dinner (loved the buffalo chicken tenders and Māla burger) located in Kealakekua (it is about 1/2 way between Kailua-Kona and the house on Mamalahoa Hwy to the house). If you have a hankering for pizza we thoroughly enjoyed the vegan option pizza from Get Sum Pizza which is co-located with Up Country Bakery.
This is a great property. It is secluded, but central to the island. It has it all. Perfect Ocean Views from every room in the house and outside. Amazing gardens and vegetation; It's a great sturdy house. The pool and hot tub are so easy to access. Our family loves this house, we highly recommend it.
We are a french family of 2 adults and 2 kids 10 and 11 years old. We really enjoyed staying in this house during our 10 days spent on Big Island. First, the house is in a unique position facing the ocean like on a private balcony. Second it has all amenities that you need to be confortable, among which the swimming pool and the large wooden deck where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful view. Third it is ideally located close to the best snorkeling spots and beaches, and on the road leading to volcano park. The owner was very helpful in providing all information and tips that we could possibly need. A really nice place for the holidays that we recommend.
We came back and only a year later! And this time was even deeper. This house really enhances living in paradise. With the peace and quiet of the location, the constant and uninterrupted view of the ocean and sunset, the pool, the hot tub, the open and easy layout of the house, the tropical birds and flowers, the kind owners and housekeepers...this house is a great deal all around.
We had a great time at Sally and Dave's house. Very comfortable place.. not fancy, over-the-top type place, but a real home. Well equipped kitchen, nice bedrooms, relaxing living room. The outside deck is great... I would have been fine just staying put and not touring around as much as we did. We used the pool and hot tub every day. Great location- 20 minutes south of Capt. Cook.. This is my favorite part of the Big Island.
We headed south and around to the volcano and Hilo .. they are both a long drive from anywhere on the island, but the volcano is worth the drive.
We will be back and would love to rent this house again....
Steve, Mari, and 3 teenagers (who loved it there as well...!)...
We are south of Honaunau, off the main highway, with a 180 degree view of the ocean and up the coastline to Kealakekua Bay and Kailua Kona. It is very quiet and private, in the country near cattle ranches and Honaunau Bay, which is the best dive and snorkel site in Hawaii, and also near the National Historical Park. We are 15 minutes from Captain Cook, where there is a shopping center, and 35 minutes from Keauhou and Kailua Kona. Our place is an oasis on a small lava flow, but landscaped so you don't see lava from the lanais. We are one and a half hours to Volcanoes National Park. There are plenty of nearby activities: snorkeling, swimming, Hookena Beach Park, scuba, kayaking, hang gliding, antiquing, coffee farms, madademia nut farms. We have 55 macademia nut trees, 4 mango trees, citrus trees. Eat your fill. Watch the birds at the feeder and the boats on the ocean. Enjoy a drink on the lanai and watch the Kona sunsets.
Other Activities: shopping, kayaking, parasailing, miniature golf, boating, wildlife viewing, basketball court
