BEAUTIFUL HOME WITH PANORAMIC OCEAN VIEW, LARGE POOL, HOT TUB.

Captain Cook House Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedrooms, 1.75 Bathrooms, Other (See Description), Sleeps 6

This is a beautiful, very private home copied from a Frank Lloyd Wright design and modified to provide convenience and openness. A terra cotta cinderblock garden wall, matching the house walls, provides privacy on the mountain side, forming a large courtyard and bringing out the beauty of our bougainvillea and other tropical flowers and gardens. The other side of the house and gardens are fenced for pets, including large or small dogs. Relax on our covered lanai with a drink and your loved ones and watch the Kona sunsets over the ocean.

Enjoy the fishing boat activities on the sea below. Look up the coast at the beautiful Kealakekua Bay. Watch the saffron finches and tropical Java sparrows at the bird feeders and listen to the sounds of the Hawaiian doves. Enjoy our 3 bedrooms, carpeted, with 2 king size beds and one double bed, each equipped with dressers and closets. Each bedroom has sliding glass doors that open onto pool deck.

Additional Details: The large living room has sliding glass doors on both sides to allow the breezes through. The house retains a perfect temperature all day, no fans or air conditioning needed, but on an exceptionally hot day there are ceiling fans in every room. During the cooler evenings we sometimes close the sliding doors on the mountain side. From the bedrooms or the living room you can listen to the garden fountain and watch the birds take baths. There are 55 Macademia nut trees on the 3 acres which is a small, older lava flow. We also have mango trees and citrus. A nut cracker is provided on one of the lanai tables.

More Information: The large table seats six and we eat dinner out there in the sunsets. Our pool is long enough for lap swimming, but wide enough for kids to play in. It is heated with a solar heating system. You can walk out of the house and jump right into the pool. Bathing suits are optional because there is a privacy wall from the neighbors who are far enough away that they couldn't see what you have on anyway.

When you finish your swim, relax in our large, blue hot tub which seats seven, with two jet settings and a little waterfall. You can experiment with the different color lights in the evenings. There is a red cement lanai all the way around the house, providing lots of room for your Scuba and snorkeling gear or pool toys.

Dave and Sally are newly retired teachers. We have taught in the Bay Area in California in a two room school, on Hornby Island in British Columbia, Canada, and here in Kona for the last 14 years. We also ran a group home for troubled teens in Victoria for six years. Dave runs a special program at Kealakehe High School in Kailua-Kona for teen age kids who have trouble with the larger campus, and Sally taught at the Elementary level at a private preparatory school in Kona, both in the classroom and PE and Music. We will be dividing our time between our home in Canada and our home here in Hawaii. We hope you enjoy our place.

Guestbook comments from the owner
We spent 10 glorious days at your property and were thrilled with the house and the location. The house had everything we needed and the view was spectacular. We were surprised to find what turned out to be arguably the best snorkeling/diving/swimming with dolphins spot on the Big Island just a few minutes down the road (Honaunau Bay). We loved hanging out by the pool on the lanai watching the sun set in the evenings and in the morning eating papaya from the fruit stand down the road. We had a truly restorative vacation and hope to return soon. Many thanks!!!

A PERFECT HOUSE TO ENHANCE PARADISE

  • 5 of 5
We came back and only a year later! And this time was even deeper. This house really enhances living in paradise. With the peace and quiet of the location, the constant and uninterrupted view of the ocean and sunset, the pool, the hot tub, the open and easy layout of the house, the tropical birds and flowers, the kind owners and housekeepers...this house is a great deal all around.

SOUTH KONA HOUSE... EXCELLENT !

  • 5 of 5
We had a great time at Sally and Dave's house. Very comfortable place.. not fancy, over-the-top type place, but a real home. Well equipped kitchen, nice bedrooms, relaxing living room. The outside deck is great... I would have been fine just staying put and not touring around as much as we did. We used the pool and hot tub every day. Great location- 20 minutes south of Capt. Cook.. This is my favorite part of the Big Island.
We headed south and around to the volcano and Hilo .. they are both a long drive from anywhere on the island, but the volcano is worth the drive.
We will be back and would love to rent this house again....
Steve, Mari, and 3 teenagers (who loved it there as well...!)...

Owner's Response: I was really glad to get this unsolicited review from Steve,(which I had meant to ask him for), and happy that it mentioned two points about our property that are great for people to know: that South Kona is one of the prettiest parts of the island, and that his teen-agers liked it also.
It was gratifying to know that the family might return some day. We currently have a returning family who will be staying for a month. He is also not the only visitor who has liked to stay at the house and enjoy the place and the view - although most people do like to tour around if they haven't seen the Big Island. I supply my Guide, which I wrote with all our favorite places. We thank Steve for his nice review.

NOT TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE

  • 4 of 5
We would not have been able to have the vacation in Hawaii we did if it wasn't for this house and it's value for us. We got even more than expected. The care of the gardens, pool, hot tub, and house was great. The views were exactly what the pictures represented and more. This is a gem. The owner is very accommodating and responsive. Kona is about 45min. from the location. It is a secluded paradise. We are thankful to the owner, care takers, and the Big Island itself for the experience of a lifetime.

Owner's Response: I want to thank these people for their nice review which sounded more like 5 out of 5 stars to me. They were very pleasant to deal with. They wanted to bring their dog, which our yard is set up for, but after I told them all they needed to do to bring a pet to Hawaii they decided to take my suggestion and got a housesitter for the month. I especially liked their comment that "this is a gem". I hope they can return one day. Sally Englund

FOUND PARIDISE

  • 5 of 5
Far from the Madding crowd. We loved the quiet and the isolation. The property is beautiful and the vista is breathtaking. My breath was taken every morning when I first opened my eyes looking out at the great pool and ocean view. It was taken again every evening as I sat watching the sun set from the Lannai. We spent so many tranquil hours just hanging out, sipping cool drinks and preparing lovely meals from the very large kitchen. The pool and hot tub were a special treat. There were hundreds of birds at the feeder just out side the kitchen. The house is all windows with lovely sounds coming from the fountain and garden in the front. Those of us who wanted to be active found plenty to do and lots of areas to explore. The location and layout of the drive way and car port are not for the faint of heart. There is a very steep entry to the car port and you can only do it with a 4 wheel drive. Sally and Dave were so wondeful to deal with and dear Sally even had graduated steps added to the pool when I said the pool stair looked very steep and i didn't think I could manage it. The new steps were perfect. Thank you Sally and Dave for sharing your piece of paradise.

Owner's Response: We really enjoyed meeting Lynne and Chris as we came back at the very end of their stay. The gravel driveway has been paved and is now beautiful, although a low rental car still has to be parked on the circle above the carport, with a short walk down, as we do often anyway. A car with a little higher clearance would make it, and any 4wd cars. We were really happy they liked the place as much as we do, and even said "we would have to kick them out when we returned because they were enjoying themselves so much."

SOMEWHAT RURAL LOCATION WITH GREAT VIEWS

  • 4 of 5
Great view. If looking for location close to restuarants and shopping, this is not the location for you. a good 40-50 minute drive into Kona depending on traffic and a bit of a drive to smaller communities in the area with limited offerings. More of a rural location on a lava flow. lot's of local nature around the house including lucky geckos in the house and lots of birds at the bird feeders. 10-20 minutes to 2 great beaches. Pu?uhonua O H?naunau National Historical Park with nearby snorkeling location (called Two-Step) our favorite. Pay to park at the National Park (fee is good for 7 days) and short walk out of park to the snorkeling area. Ho`okena Beach is other close beach. some snorkel but Pu'uhonua is better.

House furnishings a bit dated and basic, not fancy at all but beds seemed comfortable with nice sheets. Helpful owner answered many questions and gave great directions and tips. Pool temp was pretty cool but we were there during rainy season with lots of cloud cover for most of the day so pool didn't absorb heat from sun. Had Jacuzzi that looked nice but we didn't use. there is only 1 bathroom (not 1.5+ per description). nights cooled down nicely and got good breezes from the mountain side through the house. floor fans helped at night too. House designed for airflow and lots of light. there were a few minor property issues we reported to owner but I have full confidence they will be taken care of and not a worry to other visitors. Sally was very responsive to emails even while we were at the house. They had some family games and reference books that we got some good use out of as well.
Favorites: Punalu'u Bake Shop, Teshima's Resturant and Ultimate Burger in Kona. Night Manta Ray Snorkel with Fair Winds/Hula Kai and Snorkel day at Kealakekua Bay aboard Fair winds II.

Owner's Response: Our house is a Frank Lloyd Wright design, and does capture the breezes. We don't know why Mary put in only 1 bathroom. There is another on the lanai with a toilet and shower, so that's why we put 1.5. Maybe she didn't find it, as it has a little door. You can wash your hands in the nearby kitchen sink. To the other side of Kailua-Kona it's a 40 minute drive, unless you go during rush hour, but there's a bypass road that makes it shorter. We usually make it into town in about 35 minutes. There's a supermarket about 15 minutes away in Captain Cook, and a corner store about 5 minutes away that has eggs, milk, cereal, sauces, etc. We are in a rural area, and this year there is a bloom of little crab spiders in the bushes that she didn't like, but they're never in the house. In Arizona, I guess, all spiders are poisonous. In Hawaii there are no poisonous spiders or snakes. We are taking care of the spiders as best we can with our gardener. We have also addressed the other things she mentioned to us in email, as this is our first year with vrbo. Our other renters, although asked for feedback, all have been nothing but positive. Mary said she had a good time in the house. We are in the country with a 180 degree view of the ocean and it's very quiet. The snorkeling at the nearby beach is the best in Hawaii, and we usually find a free parking space there, or there's a church parking lot for $2.00 right at the beach. The national historical park next to the beach is a must see. We have left my 12 page Guide to the Big Island with all our favorite sights, activities, beaches, and restaurants in it, and we're glad Mary took advantage of it. The Big Island has every ecological climate in the world except the two most extreme, and you can't see it all in even a year, unless you set out every day. Aloha, Sally Englund

SPECTACULAR VIEWS - GREAT HOME BASE FOR EXPLORING THE BIG ISLAND

  • 5 of 5
We felt immediately at home in this lovely 3 bdrm ranch style home set high in the lava fields with spectacular views overlooking the historic "Captain Cook" coast. A fabulous setting to make as your home base for exploring the Big Island - if you can drag yourself away from the hot tub and pool w/ the 180+ degree ocean views. The home has all the amenities for a very comfortable stay, and be sure to get Sally's special tips for hidden beaches that only the locals can find (a different beach a day for a week!) and local restaurants and cafes. We have wonderful memories of returning from our explorations to a sunset dinner on the lanai with Hawaiian music drifting on the breeze. Well recommended.

Owner's Response: Jim and Carol stayed at our place for two weeks with their six year old son and were really nice people who loved the place. Actually, we live on a very small lava flow that is only about six acres wide, and you do not see it from the house as it is all landscaped with a privacy wall so you also don't see the neighbors up the hill. There is no one between us and the ocean. Our 900 foot elevation does allow for great coastal and ocean views and keeps us cool in the evenings. Their son had a great time with the pool and large decks. We got to meet them and get to know them a little, and really enjoyed the experience. They were avid explorers and appreciated the suggestions we made about where to go and what to see. We thank them for their great review!

We are south of Honaunau, off the main highway, with a 180 degree view of the ocean and up the coastline to Kealakekua Bay and Kailua Kona. It is very quiet and private, in the country near cattle ranches and Honaunau Bay, which is the best dive and snorkel site in Hawaii, and also near the National Historical Park. We are 15 minutes from Captain Cook, where there is a shopping center, and 35 minutes from Keauhou and Kailua Kona. Our place is an oasis on a small lava flow, but landscaped so you don't see lava from the lanais. We are one and a half hours to Volcanoes National Park. There are plenty of nearby activities: snorkeling, swimming, Hookena Beach Park, scuba, kayaking, hang gliding, antiquing, coffee farms, madademia nut farms. We have 55 macademia nut trees, 4 mango trees, citrus trees. Eat your fill. Watch the birds at the feeder and the boats on the ocean. Enjoy a drink on the lanai and watch the Kona sunsets.

Other Activities: shopping, kayaking, parasailing, miniature golf, boating, wildlife viewing, basketball court
