This beautiful mountain home (featured in Flagstaff's August, 2009 issue of 'Mountain Living Magazine') is nested in fifteen wooded acres that provide a scenic getaway from hectic city life. It is remote enough to give you the seclusion you desire, but located only 10 minutes away from downtown Flagstaff. Up here, you will never run out of things to do. Whether you prefer shopping in historic downtown Flagstaff, golfing, hiking, skiing, fishing, biking, tennis, sightseeing in Sedona, the Grand Canyon or Painted Desert, there is an activity to fit every taste.
This is a 'pet friendly' property, so bring your dog/s! If you like to ride, bring your horse/s. This area is rich in great riding areas, with lovely trails out the back door. You won't find better riding anywhere in town!
Many locals feel that August, September and October are the BEST months of the year. The weather, temperature and fall foliage are fabulous. By the first week of October, you can enjoy Flagstaff's and the San Francisco Peaks' legendary fall color. Oak Creek Canyon's fall splendor begins a few weeks later, but lasts into November. AND don't forget the Coconino County Fair the last weekend of August.
Also, during the summer months, nearby Ft. Tuthill/Fairgrounds is in full swing with concerts, festivals, antique shows, beer-tastings and so on.
My family gathered here for Thanksgiving week. We had a great time exploring trails both right from the house and others around Flagstaff, visiting Grand Canyon and seeing a bit of the town. The home itself is so comfortable and inviting with its fireplace, spacious rooms, and large windows filled with views of meadows and Ponderosa pines that our very best times were spent right there. We easily cooked an entire Thanksgiving meal in the well-equipped kitchen and spent hours relaxing by the fireplace.
Owner was very good assisting as we got ourselves oriented - available but also gave us our own space. Just the right touch.
My daughter's dog was welcomed, and several friends came and went, easily accommodated in the huge upstairs sleeping space.
We hope to return to see this great place in other times of the year.
We had a lovely relaxing stay. The home was comfortable, the kind of place where you can keep your shoes on. We filled our days with hikes in the national forest, reading and board games. And we stayed warm in the evenings with a roaring fire. Our pups met horses for the first time and loved the freedom of being off leash. The owner, an animal lover, was present, kind and helpful. Even though the property has easy access to I17 and shopping/restaurants are only 5 mins away, the feeling on the property is one of seclusion, peace and nature.
We are already planning our next several trips to this amazing retreat. My husband and I just returned home from our stay with our children, ages 14, 12 and 9, and they are all begging us to move in permanently. Honestly, it is difficult to guess who enjoyed the experience the most: the parents, the children, or the dog. Though we visited during the summer, we cannot imagine a season that would not be ideal to view from the rocking chairs on the amazing decks of this cabin.
We appreciated the serenity of the meadow and activity of the many options for hiking and exploring. (And though I hate to admit it, we also made full use to the TV viewing options. However, we also took advantage of the stocked books and games available.) We truly felt like we were "out in the woods", yet a trip to Target, the grocery store, or dinner took only 5 minutes. We ate in most meals, and everything we needed to prepare our meals was pre-stocked in the kitchen.
The "second bedroom" described in the listing is actually the second floor of the rental. It is huge! The layout is amazing, and now my kids are convinced that the next time we go they should be allowed to bring their friends and cousins.
Valarie was flexible, accomodating and kind, and the children adored getting to visit with and pet her horses which reside on site. (Her residence attaches to the cabin.)
My only hesitation in giving this review is that I will be creating more competition for my next reservation.
My husband, our pets and I spent the weekend at the Flying Horse Getaway and really loved it. The house is great and in a wonderful location in the forest with access to excellent trails for hiking, biking and horse back riding. The house is only a few minutes away from Flagstaff but is in a very secluded and quiet location. Valarie was extremely nice and helpful and we look forward to more visits in the future. We will bring our horses next time!!
This location can't be beat. It's close to Flagstaff, yet just far enough out of town to give it a country feel. The cabin is located next to walking, biking, and riding trails. The cabin is fully equipped with everyone you would need. Great owner who s very accommodating.
Couldn't have asked for a better experience or a more beautiful place to stay!! I don't even know where to start in explaining this gorgeous place! We had everything we needed to make the weekend special and the owner was fantastic. She even came to help push out our cars as we were stuck in the snow! We will definitely be coming back to this place!
Bring your own horse to ride! Horse boarding available on property.
