Capture the Sunset. Relax on the deck with a drink and your loved ones while watching the sun set behind the beautiful Carolina mountains. Spend your vacation in this spacious house on the side of Sunset Mountain, overlooking Asheville. We are 3 minutes from Asheville, 10 minutes from The Biltmore Estate, 4 minutes from The Grove Park Inn and all that Asheville has to offer. This home will accommodate a large party without feeling cramped. It has an abundance of off-street parking, is very private (yet close) and is located on the original carriage road from Grove Park Inn to the Seeley Castle. Seeley Castle is just across the street and is the castle that Fred Seeley (E.W. Grove's son-in-law) built after he finished construction on the Grove Park Inn.

Why this house!: New on the vacation rental market. We both grew up in the Asheville area and certainly there is no nicer place to live or vacation than in Asheville. This has been our home for the past 9 years, but with all of our children grown and gone we no longer need the space and are moving into a somewhat smaller house. We plan to travel some and having a smaller house to care for on a routine basis will work better for our situation.

Sophie's Retreat is convenient to all that happens in Asheville. We have enjoyed living in this wonderful house and will certainly miss the convenience. It will however make a great vacation rental with its 3 fireplaces, many rooms, plentiful parking and decks that go on forever. Please enjoy!

Additional Information: We purchased Sophie's Retreat as our principle residence in 2002 and chose the location for the views and the convenience.

Sophie's Retreat is extremely convenient and is right in the middle of everything important going on in this area. The house has views, is very spacious and convenient. The house was bought to live in and recently converted to a vacation rental. There are 4 ski areas close by, on the same road as the famous Grove Park Inn( don't miss their Sunday brunch) and 3 minutes from downtown Asheville where one can find shopping (especially craft and specialty vendors) and a great selection of restaurants.

Dogs welcome. This reminds me of an old joke that goes like this: A man wrote to a small hotel he planned to visit on his vacation. He wrote 'I would very much like to bring my dog with me. He is well groomed and very well behaved. Would you be willing to let me keep him in the room with me at night. An immediate reply came from the hotel owner who wrote: SIR: ' I have been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time I have never a dog steal towels, bed sheets, pillows, silverware or pictures off of the walls. I have never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. I have never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed your dog is welcome at my hotel. And if your dog will vouch for you, you are welcome to stay here too.'

1.3 miles from downtown Asheville/ 1/2 mile from Grove Park. The house is centrally located to the Asheville. One can easily be in downtown Asheville in less than 5 minutes. There are many restaurants, grocery stores and craft pubs located within several minutes of the house.

Other Activities: Kayaking, Wildlife Viewing, Hot Air Ballooning, Boating, Snowboarding, Rock Climbing, Health/Beauty Spa, Miniature Golf, Shopping

Golf: There are many courses in the area ranging from highly rated and pricey to less expensive. Our municipal course is surprisingly well groomed and affordable. Black Mountain is also a great, affordable course. Grove Park Inn course is one of the top rated in the area but is usually somewhat pricey. One can see this course from the house.

Ski: There are several ski areas within easy driving. Which one you choose depends on skiing ability and other factors. The larger areas are Beech and Sugar Mountain, are 1 1/2 to 2 hours away and tend to cater to more advanced skiers while the closer areas are Cataloochee and Wolfe Ridge. These are more family oriented and both have tube parks for those who don't ski or board. Both of these are about a hour away. There are other areas like Ober Gatlinburg and Appalachian that should be checked as well.

Charlie has been on ski patrol at Cataloochee for a number of years and is of course somewhat prejudiced but feels that this area is far superior to the others over all unless you are a very advanced boarder or skier. We have awesome snow making capability and are usually the first area to open on the East Coast. We also have the most professionally run operation and are the most family oriented. This is not only my opinion but am told this by customers every time I ski.

AMAZING Trip! THANK YOU!

I apologize for writing this review a little late, but I cannot thank Charlie enough for helping us find the PERFECT home for our stay. The house was huge, gave us plenty of room to sleep and also had a ton of communal space. The view is amazing and we were just sorry we didn't have more time to enjoy it. The house is perfectly located 5 minutes from downtown, but set high enough so that you feel like you are miles away. Charlie did a wonderful job of helping us with information on visiting Asheville and he was incredibly accommodating with all of our requests.

I hope to visit Asheville again soon -- and I would definitely stay at one of Charlie's properties and highly recommend that you do too!
Owner's Response: Thank you for such a wonderful review. We love to hear that our guests have enjoyed their stay in the Asheville area. We try our best to make our guests feel at home here and help them maximize their vacation. Since we both grew up here and still live in the area, we feel well qualified to recommend places to go and things to see. Asheville is a dynamic area, changing every day and although we are not travel agents, we keep our eyes open and ears close to the ground as to what is happening. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay and certainly do hope you will stay with us again.

A great big thanks for letting us use your house for our stay. It was extremely convenient to Grove Park Inn and much more "homey". We had lots of room and really appreciate the high speed wifi as many of us had to work at night.
We will definitely stay with you again next year for the conference.
Many thanks

Words can not say how much we enjoyed our stay at your house! The sunset views Wed night were awesome. We took some pictures from the deck and sun room which we will send you as soon as we get back to our computer in Florida. We were expecting Asheville to be a bit colder but I guess we missed the cold spell last week and it had turned warm. We took your suggestion for Cataloochee and the cousins had a great time there since they had never seen snow before. We are still amazed that you actually had a ski area in the south open in November!
Our only regret is that we could not stay longer. Laura Lee probably paid you the best compliment I have ever heard when she talked about how nice the sun room was and that she could stay there forever.(She is not one to say much positive about anything - but she is definitely hooked on that room).
The house was well suited for our diverse crowd with gobs of room to spread out. The kids really liked the rear entrance and probably used it to stay out late knowing we would probably never hear them come in.
We have already decided to return this summer since we can only imagine how much there is to do and see in the summer. We might even try part of the Appalachian Trail!

Wonderful experience

Submitted: December 14, 2012 Stayed: November 2012
Charlie and Stephanie, Thanks for a wonderful vacation at this fabulous house. It was absolutely perfect for our large family and our mini-reunion. We will definitely stay here again next year and hopefully can get more of the family to attend. This was a perfect time to vacation in Asheville since the weather was cool and brisk and we really enjoyed the fireplaces and the great hospitality.
Again, the stay was great; we had no problems with the house. It was larger than the pictures show and nicely furnished.
Thanks again and we WILL see you next year - just need to figure out when the reunion will occur.
