Ptarmigan Lodge at Mt Baker is Truly one of a kind! We built this cabin from the ground up. Exclusively using only wood cut and milled right on property, and built with the help of friends and family. There can only be one like it. Tucked between 200 foot tall evergreens and the Nooksack river gives you all the seclusion you need for your ultimate Private vacation getaway. Our cabin is both rustic and modern, combining hand crafted wood work with brand new furnishings & amenities. The 2 story cabin is 1800 sq ft of open floor plan. Full kitchen, dining area, living room with wood stove, master bedroom, bathroom, utility room, is all downstairs. Upstairs is a full loft with 4 single beds, and a futon. The loft has an authentic chair lift swing from Mt Baker, balcony, ping-pong table, Foosball table, stereo system, and Flat screen TV & Blu-ray DVD player. Outside living area we call our humaflage is 200 sq ft patio with wood stove, and adjacent fire ring. All over looking the Nooksack river.
The 5 acre property is set back off the road, down a 400 ft driveway. 200 ft tall standing timber dominants the upper portion. while a class 3 river and gravel bars dominate the lower portion. Its like two distinct environments woods and river. We have 350 feet of river front, which lead out to a vast wilderness area. Once down our drive way, seldom seen is another human being . You may see A occasional rafter or kayaker but only for a few minutes as they float by. Otherwise its you and Sasquatch.
The cabin is a log hybrid. A mix of whole cedar uprights and cross logs with douglas fir beams and lumber. The biggest beam is 16 x 14 & can be seen running the length of the down stairs . Cedar siding & trim. Maple floors down stairs with douglas fir floors upstairs.
The timber had to be cut to make room for the cabin. So we used it. Four douglas fir trees approx 125 years old. A dozen cedar trees the oldest 111 years is in the center of living room holding up the 2nd story. 50 foot long cedar logs are visible up stairs holding up the roof. Lastly a hand full of gnarly old maple we used for floors and fire wood. It came out great, it took three long yet wonderful years . All custom & hand crafted. We made the siding & trim as we went. The siding is laid out as it came off the log wild edge with matching knots. The railings came from cedar branches, we used it all to craft this beautifull cabin.
Now that it's all done, you can sit back and enjoy. There is nothing like warming up in a private outdoor hot tub after a long day of skiing, hiking, or rafting in the Mount Baker area. So come get away from it all, at your secluded private wilderness area.
We are truly blessed to have had the opportunity to build a cabin like this!

This is way more than we were looking for. We just wanted to be in glacier Wa, we love it there. We weren't having any luck finding what we liked in the neighborhoods. We were talked in to looking at this very raw property. Many told us it could not be done. We fell in love with it, and made it work. We were not let down. This is our wildest dream come true. I hope you love it as much as we do!
Wilderness area right in your back yard! Explore, hike, raft, wade, in a private wilderness setting. Hours & days can be spent with out seeing it all. From second growth evergreens 200 ft tall to step rugged terrain. All on our riverfront 5 acres. The river gravel bars are a world of there own. Countless acres of gravel and streams collide with the nooksack river to provide days worth exploring. And you have it all to your selves, we rarely see anyone down at the river.
I'm not a big review writer but this property was my first VRBO experience and it was exceptional. It is very clean and has absolutely everything you could possibly need, from extra towels and soap to extra spices.
I was a little disappointed that the main glass doors were locked and we weren't able to enter and exit through them.
There aren't any grocery stores nearby so prepare for that and no cell phone service. The cell phone service definitely isn't missed but come with music for an ipod dock or your own movies for the dvd player.
Overall, pictures don't do it justice. Great cabin and can't wait to return in the winter!
This rental home was, for us, a perfect way to spend a week of glorious hiking on the trails on the north side of Mt. Baker. We live just 2 hrs from Glacier and need about 30-06 additional minutes to reach the trailheads off Hwy 542. We save 4 hours of drive time a day (24 hrs. for our stay) when we rent a home here. Ptarmigan Lodge was clean, comfortable, very quiet and very private. We found the bed comfortable and the kitchen well equipped for meal preparation (we did not eat out). Coming back to a shower, good meal, and a soak in the hot tub at our age (retired) sure beats camping. We have stayed in rentals in the two gated recreation communities nearby and found the privacy here much preferred and without a long list of rules. We would recommend this to friends. Thank you, John, for making your home available.
my husband and i came over labor day weekend from detroit and stayed for 4 days. it was absolutely perfect and we were so sad when the time came to move onto the next portion of our trip (heading into seattle for a few days). pictures of the lodge don't do it justice - SO beautiful. we spent our days hiking in the mt. baker area, then would come back to the cabin for a soak in the hot tub and make dinner and relax in the evenings. the kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed. so many fun games and things to do; also of note, the lodge was immaculate. if you're planning on going hiking, the ranger station nearby is SO helpful. also, plenty of access to groceries and wi-fi not too far into town in either direction. overall, an incredible experience and would HIGHLY recommend.
This was our first Baker adventure and we were so impressed with both the area and this home. Our kids loved the skiing (1/2 hr. away, pretty much the same as all the other rentals around Glacier) while we got to enjoy quiet cabin time. This is a large private piece of property, no highway view or noise like other rentals in the area but quick easy access. I agree, that the picture of the house doesn't do it justice, there is nature all around to enjoy, even if you only enjoy it from the warmth of the cabin!
This is no ordinary "rental" - felt like we had be invited to stay at a friends house and we felt privileged to be able to share this families amazing home. It is beyond well-stocked and there were wonderful "extras" that made us feel very welcome and well taken care of (calling card, parking pass for parks, soap/shampoo etc...). Very unique home - you've got to try shooting hoops from the ski swing upstairs! You will not miss your phone (although you can get great reception up on the mountain to catch messages and others can call in on the local phone). The hot tub was large, clean and not over-chemical-ized.
6-8 is an accurate estimate for guests - don't shy away because it is only one bedroom and bathroom, the futon couch upstairs has a nice memory foam topper and very comfortable for a second couple to sleep on, and the bathroom has a "water closet" so two can be in there with privacy. There are plenty of dishes/silverware (and a dishwasher) so you don't have to wash after every meal. While the home is heated primarily with the wood stove (works really well), there are electrical heaters that can be used if needed in those areas (the bathroom was toasty in no time!). Do bring slippers in the winter!
We were honored to be trusted with this beautiful home and would highly recommend it!
Our family of 5 (2 teen boys, 15 and 14, and a girl, age 9) stayed for Thanksgiving and it couldn't have been a better, more relaxing time "unplugging" (yes, my teen boys "survived" no internet or cell service and it facilitated the togetherness aspect of the holiday, bringing us back to simpler times, conversation, and laughter..it would have been a slightly different experience if they were tied to their phones or computers! Highly recommended to get the entire family to "detach" from our gadgets and "attach" instead to each other!) The cabin was welcoming, clean, had great books, board games, ping pong, foosball, hiking opportunities, the hot tub. I love the wood stove! Cozy! Amazing to see how the cabin was built (see the photo albums) and appreciate all the great architectural touches.. Kitchen was very well-equipped, beds were incredibly comfortable. The owner was very helpful with directions, etc.Thank you for sharing your lovely cabin and we hope to be back!
This is a beautifully hand crafted cabin made from trees cleared on site. It has a whimsical almost fairytale feel from the use of the logs and their inherent, natural irregularities. There is one large bedroom on the main floor with a loft upstairs that looks like it could house the seven dwarfs (there are 4 twin beds, a futon, a ping pong table and fussball table with a ski lift swing, as well as a flat screen TV and a large DVD collection).
We were wanting to get away from technology and traffic and as there is no WiFi or cell service this was perfect for us. There is a landline and calling cards available. We took 6 hikes on Mt Baker, drove into Bellingham to see Batman and to Harrison Hotsprings for a day. The hot tub was perfect and highly anticipated on our way down the mountain! The weather was warm at first but then cooled so that making a fire in the inside woodstove in the morning and evening was pleasant. There is an outdoor fireplace and grill as well. The river is the main sound effect and there is a trail down to it and backpackable lawn chairs to take down and enjoy being at the Nooksack edge.
If you have neck issues you'll want your own pillows and bring lots of books. We brought Travel Scrabble and played more Scrabble than we have in 24 years of marriage (a good thing!). There are lots of spices and condiments available. the stores in Maple Falls a fairly well stocked. The restaurant in Glacier, Milanos, is fabulous and reasonably priced for the quality. Pizza at chair 9 was good also.
Unique property allows for on site hiking, exploring, or just relaxing. Our 5 acers of riverfront property leads to a vast river wilderness. Come and enjoy!
