ON A BLUFF OVERLOOKING CLEAR CREEK, SIPSEY WILDERNESS, TRAILS!

Lewis Smith Lake Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Cottage,2 Bedrooms,2 Baths...with optional Bungalow separate cabin(1 BR)

Need a quiet place to unwind and relax? This farm is 600 acres of oaks, dogwoods, pines and wildflowers surrounded by the Bankhead National Forest, with no neighbors in sight!

Why do we call it the River Art House? It sits on a bluff overlooking Clear Creek, the 'River' part. It was constructed by an artist named Art Fowler, whose original art still hangs throughout the cabin. Amazing!

IF you need more than 2 bedrooms and don't mind spreading your group out a bit, we also have the Bungalow cabin on the same property. Or if you would rather rent a bit smaller, more cozy spot, you may decide to rent only the Bungalow. We rent it for $80/night, plus cleaning fee. The Bungalow is a 1 bedroom, 1 bath, living room and wonderful kitchen upstairs over the barn. It is about 100 yards from the River Art Cabin. The Bungalow has a nice deck overlooking a meadow that leads down to Clear Creek and the Secret Beach! It is a cozy and relaxing spot in and of itself. See the last few photos for what it looks like!

You may want to spend your days fishing or tubing the creek or exploring the incredible canyons of the Sipsey Wilderness. Perhaps you would enjoy mountain biking the miles of Bankhead National Forest roads near by. Love hiking and backpacking, the Sipsey has many miles of hiking trails.

Love to hunt? Check out the Bankhead National Forest! You can drive just a few miles and hunt on National Forest land.

Enjoy birdwatching? What about a night with no street lights for perfect stargazing? This is the place for you!

There is a full kitchen in both cabins, but if you'd rather not cook, hop in the car and run to Double Springs for a homecooked Italian meal at the Sapore Grill!

There are two bedrooms in the RIver Art Cabin, the Master bedroom has a king size bed and a private upstairs deck with a sliding glass door. There is a private Master bath also. The second bedroom has a bunk bed.

One of my favorite parts of the place is the Gazebo, a beautiful structure set atop a sandstone bluff overlooking a shoals of Clear Creek about 70 feet below. You can enjoy a sunset with a glass of wine sitting on the gazebo listening to the rippling creek below. Or wake up early and walk down the path to the gazebo with a hot cup of coffee.

You can stroll for miles on our dirt roads or walk down the path to Clear Creek and take a dip in the cool waters that are a tributary to Smith Lake.

Truly remote. This cottage is at the end of the road... literally! You will drive down a small country road for about 4 miles and when the road ends... you are home!

Maggie Johnston purchased this cottage in 2011

We bought this place for the pure joy of owning a remote piece of Nature on the banks of Clear Creek!

There is nothing quite like communing with nature in a beautiful place near a moving stream. You will find it valuable to spend some quiet time just sitting on the porch or gazebo and listening to nature!

very disappointed

  • 3 of 5
If you want to be in a deserted place this is for you. When we arrived at the house it was clean and as discribed. I rented this property because of the hidden beach by the creek. We took the scroll to the hidden beach and only got so far it was grown up and we couldn't get to it.
There is no lights on the path to the Gazebo and very grown up a little scarey for me. I can't tell you how my disappointment as to the hidden beach put a damper on my whole trip.

Owner's Response: Linda and family must not have followed the map to find the trail to the Secret Beach. I was there yesterday with my grandson as we tubed the beautiful Clear Creek and strolled the beach trail back to the start of the tubing section. I lay on the sand in the sun, while my grandson played in the sand and skipped rocks on the sparkling waters. I surely wish that Linda had called to ask for help following the trail. One of us would gladly have come over and enjoyed a short stroll with them to find the beach through the "tunnel of Mountain Laurel", a well clipped trail of about 100 yards along the creek bank. See photos on the VRBO page!

Beautifully Relaxing

  • 5 of 5
We had a wonderful extra long weekend and celebrated 2 birthdays in style.
We loved the secret beach and playing in the creek - especially our 3yr old and our dog.
None of us wanted to leave - we had to pry the dog off the porch - definitely a place we look forward to returning for more adventures.
The house was very well equipped and the owners extremely friendly and accommodating.

Remote Getaway

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I decided to take a last minute trip to Smith Lake. We wanted a remote and private location. We found it. This cabin is perfect for getting away. This area is very remote. There isn't a grocery store around the corner. The creek is pristine and crystal clear, the view from the gazebo is unforgettable, and the cabin is just what we wanted. And, the owners are fabulous - hospitable but respectful of our desire to get away. We can't wait to get back.

Family Getaway Fun

  • 4 of 5
I took my family here this past weekend (4 boys ages 15-23) and we had a great time. Most of our time in the day was spent on the secret beach a short hike down the trail. We brought a couple of kayaks to play around in this section of Clear Creek. We really enjoyed the gazebo early in the morning and at night. It was nice being able to bring our dog as well. It was a very relaxing family time in a great environment. The cottage was nice though we exceeded normal capacity with 6. One enjoyed sleeping on the balcony so we never felt cramped. Tables inside and out can hold 6 for meals. The cottage was clean and had most everything we needed, including a grill. There were a few maintenance items needed in the cottage, but nothing that would keep us from returning again. We were also close to the Sipsey Wilderness and took a day hike there in some beautiful scenery. The owner recommend an italian restaurant in Double Springs and it was very good. Other than that, all our meals were at the cottage.

Spacious Quarters, Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5
The gazebo overlooking Clear Creek and the "secret beach" were favorites of our family. Our 5-year-old and our English Bull Terrier loved exploring this beautiful property, and the cabin was open and comfortable, with plenty of amenities for cooking.

Peaceful Creekside Retreat

  • 5 of 5
The house and property were all one could hope for in a getaway. The house was spotless and the King-sized bed very comfortable with high quality sheets. The property had pleasant surprises every way you turned and some surprises went beyond pleasant and into breath-taking like the Secret Beach. My husband loved the view from the top deck. He spent 45 minutes with the kids pointing out constellations and woke me at 3am after the moon had set to get me to look at the Milky Way. We went on a day trip to Dismals Canyon which was announced the best hike ever. Next time, we will come in the Summer with more time to use and try the Bear Creek canoeing and maybe a Wilderness trail.
