Photos and Description of the Budapest vacation apartment rental
Apartment, 1 Bedroom + Den, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 3)

Smart, stylish and comfortable, this 'Budapad' is a quiet and relaxing oasis in the heart of Budapest. From our location you can easily get to every major site and event in Budapest. However, the apartment is set back from the street so you can sleep deep at night as you make you way home exhausted from your adventures.

The Budapad is located in the beautiful District VI, home to the Opera House, Andrássy Blvd, Liszt Ferenc Square, Oktogon and is a stone’s throw from the very funky Jewish Quarter. Here you are surrounded by fine restaurants, cheap eateries, local and international cuisine, local markets, diverse shops, boutiques, alternative pubs and bars, popular theatres, bakeries, delis, supermarkets, flower shops, you name it.

The Budapad is ideally situated in a prime location, in a triangle between three major transportation lines, making it easy to get anywhere in the city very quickly.

About The Owner

Rita Bozi is a Canadian-born Hungarian, whose father fled Hungary during the 1956 Revolution. Her mother followed in 1964 and Rita was born in Winnipeg a year later. She has been a Hungarian citizen since 2011 and speaks Hungarian fluently. She is a Consultant/Facilitator in Calgary Alberta, a writer and a retired dancer and actor. Rita designed Kicsi Zichy.

Ken Cameron was born on a farm in Ontario but developed a taste for international travel as a boy. He is a playwright, director and all-around man of the theatre who has contributed to making Calgary one of Canada's cultural hubs. Ken also uses his theatre and writing skills to help clients make better presentations in the business world. Ken struggles to wrap his tongue around the Hungarian language, but has definitely fallen in love with the city.

About your Caretakers

Éva is Rita’s fabulous Hungarian cousin who resides in Budapest with her jovial husband Karcsi and their English-speaking daughter Edina. They are lovely people who will come and help if something breaks down.

The Owner purchased this apartment in 2011
Why The Owner chose Budapest

We chose to live in Budapest because it reminds us of what we think Berlin must have been fifteen years ago. The number of funky bars, clubs and art houses in the nearby Jewish Quarter makes for a vibrant nightlife; while the Hungarian's love of the arts ensures a hopping cultural scene.

Vienna and Budapest used to be twin capitals of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and in many ways they are like two sisters. Vienna was the straight-laced one who married a banker; and Budapest was the wayward sister who lived her life a little too heartily. She may show a more lines on her face, but she is a heck of a lot more fun.

We chose this particular flat for two reasons: because of its central location and its beautiful modern renovation. The recent renos ensure that everything is in top-notch working order and we can be assured that we and our guests need not worry.

The exposed brick archway was the clincher. Exposed brick is a highly sought-after design element in North America, but is very difficult to find in Budapest. Our theory is that because all the buildings are old (unlike in North America) such things are not valued. This theory was born out when Rita's Hungarian Aunt first saw the apartment: she said 'its very beautiful ... but why didn't they finish this part of the wall?'

What makes this apartment unique

This exclusive, bright and well-appointed apartment is housed in a building built between the late 1880’s and the early 1900’s. It is the perfect blend between historical and modern. Vintage objects from Hungary’s recent past make up the décor at the Budapad.

As you come up the stairs you may hear strains of a piano sonata emanating from the flat adjacent to the stairwell. This is not a recording: it is our neighbour, world-class concert pianist Fellegi Ádám.

We have developed an apartment guide that provides detailed descriptions of how the appliances in the apartment operate. It also contains several pages of recommendations for some our favourite neighbourhood haunts.

Home away from home

My husband, older daughter, and I stayed at Budapad while visiting our younger daughter, who is studying abroad in Budapest. The apartment was exceptionally comfortable for the three of us. It is immaculately maintained, tastefully furnished and decorated, and has all the amenities you will need during your stay: shower, washer, separate WC, very comfortable bed, and well-equipped kitchen. The owners are very professional and promptly reply to emails. The location is halfway between the Opera and Oktogon Yellow Line stops, and trams and subways are just minutes away. Cafes, restaurants, and clubs abound in the neighborhood. The apartment is on the top level of the building, but just take a breath on the second landing before you continue up. It is well worth it. Budapest is an amazing city, and Budapad was the perfect base from which to explore it.

Ken and Rita are wonderful hosts and guests. They both travel often and know what to provide to insure the comforts of home. I have been a guest at their cabin in the woods and it was a wonderful experience that I look forward to repeating. Can't wait to stay at Kicsi Zichy! Rita is a wonderful cook and has a way with feng shui. Ken makes great wine and is a wonderful ski buddy. They are very reliable, organized and trustworthy people.

Exceptional!

5 of 5
Submitted: August 12, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
We are working photographers who need a functional, comfortable living space to support our work requirements. While we visit cities all over the world in order to make pictures, we also come to relax and take in the sites on our off days.

The Budapad is exceptional! It is in an excellent location, and it is a comfortable, inviting environment. Rita and Ken have created a space with lots of important functional details. For example, the kitchen is well thought out: plenty of dinnerware and utensils so that meal preparation is convenient; there's a generous amount of extras, like light bulbs, candles, small hand tools, clothes drying racks...things that make the space functionally attractive.

Further, Rita and Ken go out of their way to ensure that any glitches are quickly attended to. When the water heater went on the fritz, it was quickly fixed. The apartment itself is well-maintained, airy and bright.

The neighborhood has plenty of good restaurants, as well as convenient green grocers, supermarkets and the like. The apartment is situated close to public transportation and it is within walking distance of a number tourist attractions like the Opera House, the Basilica and the Terror Museum.

The apartment was an exceptional value, and supported our experience in Budapest beautifully. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: Thanks Robert for such a wonderful review! You were a delight to deal with. What made you 'exceptional' was when we told you about 'potentially' being without hot water for two days (while we waited for repairs), you responded with, "It's part of the adventure." You are a 5 star guest.

Loved your Decor

5 of 5
Submitted: June 17, 2012 Stayed: May 2012
We enjoyed staying at your apartment. I loved your selection of wall colors and decor. Having a washing machine and drying racks was a real plus! You had the most helpful book of information, instructions, etc. We really appreciated it. We also used some of your convenient tape. (We mailed ourselves the books we no longer needed with us.)

Our two days there were jam-packed with activities. We ate a quick meal at the vegetarian place down the street before rushing off to the ballet at the Opera house only a few blocks away. The next day we bought some tofu there for the train trip to Ljubljana.

We are home now, and feeling grateful for a successful, happy, educational trip. Being able to stay in your well-appointed, comfortable "Budapad" was a definite highlight. I'd recommend it to others.

Thank-you again for the opportunity to enjoy Budapest as a temporary resident.
