We are a husband/wife owner team who love WV and the mountain cabin experience.
The Owner purchased this cabin in 2005
We love the WV cabin life, you will too! We just wanted to have a place to get away from the rat race of life and unwind. You will rediscover peace, quiet and tranquility.
Sit on the deck and listen to the birds and wildlife. Relax by walking around the heavily wooded forest property. Get away from all the stress of modern 24/7 busy life.
Driveway can accommodate two vehicles.
My brother and I rented the Black Bear Chalet and each brought our son with us for a guy's weekend. We were not disappointed. The cabin was clean when we got there, and the boys loved the loft. There was lots of room to hike and search the property, TV for them to watch movies and play games and a super cozy fire to keep warm. The kids were never bored and it gave my brother and I a lot of quality time to catch up. While we had an issue trying to get the hot water on at first, Mike and Ann were unbelievably responsive. They ensured that we had everything we needed for a fantastic trip. We even forgot some items in the cabin and Mike and Ann were kind enough to send them back to us. We'll likely be back again!
My boyfriend and I rented the cabin for 2 nights it was beautiful! Well maintained inside and out! Easy to find stuff & the owners were very helpful with providing information and things to do! Very beautiful especially with the fire on a cold night!! We will definitely be going back soon !
My husband and I stayed three nights. The cabin was clean and well-maintained. The owners provided detailed information about the cabin and surrounding area; it was very helpful! We rode our bikes on the Western MD Rail Trail on the way to the cabin. We entered the trail in Hancock, MD, which is about 35 miles north of the cabin. From there headed west is a beautiful, flat, paved ride that was breathtaking with the fall foliage about at its peak! We ventured over to Cacapon State Park a couple of times. There are well-marked hiking trails for every skill level there. We also drove to the top of the mountain in the park, where there is a beautiful overlook. From there you can view parts of MD, PA, VA, and of course WV. We had a great romantic dinner at Panorama at the Peak in Berkeley Springs and enjoyed looking around in the little shops there (25 or so miles from the cabin). At the owners' suggestion, we also tried Main St. Grill in Slanesville. The food was excellent and inexpensive.
We took some beautiful photos on this trip. Next time we plan to rent a canoe, and my husband would like to try out the clay shooting range at Cacapon.
Had a wonderful time. Beautiful West Virginia Fall Foliage. It was so quiet and and relaxing. The warm fire was great. The quality family time without the TV or internet. My family truly enjoyed it and I highly recommend a weekend getaway there and we will definitely go back.
We've been up to the Black Bear Chalet in WVa with family & friends many times & in every season, it's stunning in fall & in snowy winter. We view it as our home away from home. We just returned from another perfect weekend, hiking into the woods, hunting for bear tracks, listening to bard owls & woodpeckers, sitting out under the bright night sky. Add in the cosy wood-burning stove, fireside chats, & toasted marshmallows. We love that our cell phones & internet are in time-out while we are up in the West Virginia hills, more time for nature & friends, books & music. This wooden chalet is beautifully maintained by its owners, with all the amenities, it doesn't get any better.
This cabin was EXACTLY what I was looking for! A nice quiet retreat in the beautiful trees of WV - with no Wi-Fi or cell reception (ask me how happy I was to tell my boss my BlackBerry wouldn't work there!). I don't even know where to start with what I loved about it - the fairly secluded setting in the woods, relaxing on the fabulous deck, the comfortable bed with fantastic blankets, the swing bench out back where you can relax and read and just take in your surroundings, the beautiful deer coming and going...I could go on for days!
Looking for some things to do? No problem! Paw Paw is just a short drive up the road and there is access to the Potomac River just before you hit the bridge out of town on the right hand side - once in there you will find boat access on the right (if you are facing the river) or if you are like me and on foot, there is a walking trail to the left (I went and sat with my book under the bridge!). Not your thing? Well continue over the bridge and you will come to the access to the Paw Paw Tunnel on your right a little further up. Once there you can park and either go on foot or bike on hundreds of miles of trail and within 0.6 miles of trail you will come to the Paw Paw Tunnel itself (bring a flashlight - there are 3 at the cabin!). There are several other points you can connect with the trail if you drive a little further North as well.
Overall, my main goal was relaxation and I got it! I did go with a friend but would not hesitate to go by myself - whether you are at the cabin or in the small town of Paw Paw, everyone is friendly. While we drove up in to Cumberland for groceries, the Dollar General right in Paw Paw does have a wide variety of snacks, beverages, frozen foods and hundreds of other items (pj's, slippers, mani/pedi supplies - everything really!). I would highly recommend the Black Bear Chalet for anyone looking to get away from the stress of everyday life.
