Not Happy with the Big House

We stayed on Lubbers Quarters from 12/27/12 through 1/5/13 at the "Big House". We loved the Abaco's but we were very unhappy with the Big House. This home is very dirty & primitive, and in my opinion not worth the amount of money we paid to stay here. The home has a significant bug infestation inside the house and inside both of the lower bedrooms. Also the "master" bedroom has mice living inside a mattress that is stored under the bed and inside the dresser, they roam all over the room & shelves & there was mouse poop everywhere, everyday. All 3 beds are foam laid on board & not mattresses. The furniture is very old through-out the house. There is an outdoor shower to wash off sand before you come in the house, but the owners keep it locked, so plan on sand in your bathroom showers. There is not access to a washer & dryer at this house so you have to take your laundry on a boat over to Hope Town & spend the day there washing it. We had friends at 2 other houses by us who did not have bug issues inside their house like we did, or mice. The home is on the Beach & does have beautiful views, the caretaker is also very helpful. However, I learned while we were here that there are similar properties for the same price and/or less that are much nicer. Do your homework before you book, the owners told us they had several inquiries for this time slot & interestingly enough there was hardly anyone else on the island during this time. Lubbers is a very secluded island which can be fun, but also not alot to do unless you leave it and travel to another island by your boat, as the ferry does not come here, so do not stay at Lubbers if you are looking for activities on the island, or night life as it is fairly treacherous crossing the water at night.
Owner's Response: As owners of The Big House, we take pride in keeping a clean, well- kept island home. In fact, this home received maid service directly before the initial guests arrived (reviewer arrived four days after several family members) and during this particular guest's stay and was personally deep cleaned by the owners two weeks prior (no mouse at that time!) Lubber's is an out- island of the Bahamas and in keeping, is more rustic than other more populated areas. We are disappointed that our guests did not enjoy their stay, however our home has several repeat guests. In regards to washer/dryer facilities, Lubber homes run on a cistern system, dependent on rain water. It is our utmost priority for guests to have ample water to shower, wash dishes etc. Very few, if any, homes in the area offer washer/dryer facilities on site. Unfortunately, an island mouse must have gotten into the home and was eradicated immediately. Once again, house cleanliness is a priority for us. It is absolutely not infested with bugs. However, this is not an island resort...it is a beach home. We try to take the time to explain this to our guests who are new to the area. It is unfortunate that this reviewer did not realize the area they were staying in and was disgruntled by the fact there was no laundry facilites. There is no outdoor shower (there is a storage room which may have been mistaken for a shower). The home has open air showers (enclosed on the sides) which are designed to take on some sand, as you are footsteps from the beach. In addition, the beds most certainly have real matresses (not just foam as stated). If this guest's review is concerning, we would be more than happy to provide references from guests accustomed to the "out island" experience and the rustic beauty of the Big House. In addition, it is equally important that guests know how to handle a boat for getting around and realize they are not staying in a Nassau resort. Lubber's is extremely convenient to other out islands, and boasts two great island restaurants. With that said, the out island experience is one of fun, relaxation, and enjoyment of the beautiful surroundings.
