The apartment is luxuriously appointed, self catering, light-filled, with a large living room, double bedroom with twin beds, sleeping loft, kitchen and bathroom, balcony, garden. Extra toilets on the landings. Our beds are 2m long. The bathroom has a bath with a shower. Free WiFi

In Summer, follow the Swiss National Hiking Trail, or enjoy hiking in and around the valley. Choose from easy to difficult trails. If you are more adventuraous rock-climbing and paragliding are available on your doorstep. The Via Ferrata is one of the most difficult rock-climbing routes in the Alps.

In Winter, explore the valley on the 80km of cross-country tracks or the 50km of walking trails. Enjoy the family alpine skiing areas above the village. You may like to try (or watch) ice-climbing at international level.

Let the clean, punctual, comfortable Swiss public transport whisk you to all the wonderful sights of Switzerland. Kandersteg has two trains per hour, regular buses and three cable-cars. Choose from a variety of special value tickets. We can advise you on the one for you.

Come home to relax in the garden with 360 degree views of the mountains and a glass of good Swiss wine.

Pack your great-grandmother's ball gown and join Kandersteg for a week in January when the village returns to the Belle Epoque era of the late 19th century. Victorian activities of all types are on offer (including formal balls) and most Kandersteg residents dress in Victorian clothing. You can rent costumes in the village.

Bill and Pam Adams are now Swiss but were born in the US and UK. They took early retirement and now rent holiday apartments in their renovated Swiss chalet. They love hiking, discussions with their guests, cooking and eating, reading, travelling.

Pam and Bill Adams purchased this apartment in 1998

We spent many holidays in Kandersteg and when early retirement became possible we jumped at the chance. The Kanderstegers were so friendly and helpful, the air is fresh and clean and public transport is the best in the Alps. There are trains from three Swiss international airports and Milan. A Victorian Hotel came up for sale. It needed major renovation and changes in design but was completed in 6 months. We live on the ground floor and enjoy meeting with our guests. We take the labrador pup from the Senior Centre for a walk most days.

The area around Kandersteg is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site. The scenery is truly spectacular. The lake above the village is probably the most beautiful in the Alps.

We are a two minute walk from the shops and post office, 3 minutes from the station.

The visitor card gets you free travel on the local bus, reductions on the cable-cars and the museum, swimming pool. etc.

Great apartment in friendly village

  • 5 of 5
Even leaving aside the friendliness and helpfulness of the owners, this would still be one of the best apartments that we have stayed in. It was very spacious indeed, lots of room to relax, the beds were very comfortable, the whole place was spotless, and the kitchen was very well equipped. Although it is on the main street of the village and very handy for everything it was very quiet. It is only 5 minutes or less to the railway station and a minute to the bus stop. There are loads of books and DVDs for bad weather, and the WiFi seems to work well. There is a nice sunny garden to sit in, which we used as the weather was fantastic while we were there.
Kandersteg is a reasonable size village with supermarkets, specialist shops and a tourist office, but seems a lot more friendly than other Swiss villages we have stayed in. The Oeschinsee area is absolutely beautiful, although at that time of year there is not a lot of walking available there, but it is worth a day even if you are not skiing. The Sunnbuel area and the Gemmi Pass are definitely worth a visit, although we were surprised at how busy this area was, perhaps due to the amazing weather. You can reach other beautiful places, such as Lotschental, very easily from Kandersteg via the wonderful Swiss transport system. It is definitely worth researching the travel passes available well before you come since some can only be purchased outside Switzerland. The owners can advise on good walks and trips.
We were in touch with them before arrival and they were very good at addressing any concerns. If we asked for anything they got it for us immediately - I don't know how they could have been more helpful, but they were never intrusive.
We fully intend to visit Kandersteg again, and will certainly stay at this apartment.

Wonderful Week

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I spent a week in this wonderful old hotel that has been converted to apartments. The apartments are very comfortable, and the kitchen is exceptionally well stocked with everything you need. Pam and Bill are very nice and are happy to give advice about what to do in the area. They went out of their way to be sure we were comfortable and happy. My husband and I travel a lot, and we've never met nicer proprietors. We had our border collie with us, and they also welcomed him quite warmly. Our week was definitely a 5-star experience. Kandersteg and the surrounding area are very beautiful!

Wonderful alpine retreat

  • 5 of 5
Pam and Bill made us very welcome from the moment Pam collected us from the station. The apartment was much larger and better equipped than some holiday apartments we have used over the years and had the feeling of a home from home.

Kandersteg is a wonderful base for walking, anything from a gentle stroll by the River Kander to exposed terrain mountain paths. If you have never been to Switzerland, all the approved footpaths are marked with yellow signs "wanderweg". The signs can be a bit patchy, so it's as well to have a local map to confirm your route. The local "wanderkarte" map is available at the tourist information office complete with English notes on the nearby paths.

The hourly train service to Thun, Spiez and Brig gives many opporunities for exploring different areas of Switzerland. Through ticketing is available across the whole network, not just BLS, which is the local train company. There are all sorts of discount and holiday passes available on Swiss Railways. Most of these passes will give 50% discounts on mountain railways. Visit the SBB web site for further details of Swiss Travel passes..

If you want to do a mountain railway, the funicular from Mulenen to the summit of Niesen is much quieter than many and is only a 15 minute train ride away. It's also possible to walk to the summit as well!.

For a relaxed day, try a trip on the lake ferries on the Thunersee and Brienzersee, which are run by BLS. The timetables are available on line or at Kandersteg station show which sailings are worked by paddle steamers.

The restaurant across the road, Cafe Schweitzerhof has the widest range of vegetarian food in Kandersteg. It's friendly, the food is good and has the ultimate accolade of being used by the locals.
If you like interesting beers, try the Feldschlossen "Dunke Perle" dark beer which is available here.

I would recommend Adams Alpine Eden to friends and relatives as a homely, convenient holiday location. We're now looking forward to returning and exploring more of the Kander Valley.

Like staying inside a Postcard.. AMAZING

  • 5 of 5
We had an amazing stay in Kandersteg - it is just a beautiful village.. but what really made our vacation amazing was Pam and Bill - they are just lovely people. Bill picked us up from the train station even though its only a 5 minute walk and gave us a quick tour of the village. Unfortunately my daughter got ill but thank goodness for Pam - she booked us into the local village Doctors and explained everything to us.. by the way fantastic health care system in Switzerland! Pam was great making reservations for local restaurants and always made sure their door was open if you needed it. What I really appreciated was that they were always available if you needed their help. The apartment was really lovely, bright windows everywhere and lovely balconies overlooking the alps and the village. Really comfortable beds and a kitchen that had everything. We toured Europe for a month and stayed in some great places but this was my absolute favourite and can't wait to return. The local restaurants are excellent especially the Reudihaus? Also recommend walking to the gondola and hiking to the lake. I have recommended this property to all my friends and relatives and although Switzerland is very expensive, this property is the best value in comparison to other travellers we met, especially because its self contained. Also if its a rainy day there is a great library of English books and English DVD's - we really enjoyed each night picking out a movie.

Home from Home

  • 5 of 5
I e mailed Pam in November and knew immediately from the friendly response that this sounded like our sort of holiday apartment.
As soon as we arrived Bill and Pam made us feel at home and during our two week stay helped us arrange transport for a hiking route and gave us local information regarding where to eat out and what was going on locally.
There are fantastic walking routes locally for both winter and summer, for us the highlight was also the extensive langlauf skiing routes.
The apartment was beautiful with everything we could have wished for from a welcome pack of food when we arrived to books and DVDs for us to read and watch if we needed. The apartment was clean and well presented and well stocked with crockery, cutlery, pots and pans and even had a dishwasher.
There are fantastic views from every window, and there are good transport links with a bus stop and train station very close by. We arrived by car and the links to the motorway system were easy, with parking right outside the apartment.
We will certainly be telling friends and family about Adams Alpine Eden and will be returning in the future as it is such a great base for everything alpine.

We stayed here in sept. 2012. Pam and Bill the owners were great. They thought of everything. The property was so clean and well kept. We felt so at home. They were both so helpful in answering our questions--even giving us the weather report for the area we were going to. We loved the location, we were in the center of very popular site seeing attractions and we loved Kandersteg---a real hometown feel.It was very close to the train station. Pam met us the train station the day we arrived and drove us there the day we daparted. I would love to come back here again.
