This award-winning home is surrounded by 2000 acres of wildlife preserve; a place of quiet, private, peaceful, natural beauty. We have a diverse garden, chickens, bees. Nearby well-known bicycle trails. Bikes are provided free of charge. The home is completely equipped and works best as a retreat for adults who want to enjoy peace and quiet, walk, ride, cook, read or soak in the huge tub. There is a cozy wood stove in the house and a screened-in gazebo outside with a fire pit, chairs and tables. The home also serves as a base to explore southern WI Nearby: picturesque Driftless Area, WI and Mississippi Rivers (swim and paddle), Spring Green w/ Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin (architecture) & American Players Theater (Shakespeare under the stars), Mineral Point (art galleries), New Glarus (beer and Swiss food), Madison (state capitol, university, farmer's market, cultural events, restaurants.

Award-winning architecture: To paraphrase the jury representing the Wisconsin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects which selected the house for an Honor Award in 2000, the house is an elegant yet simple 1,600-square-foot example of American vernacular architecture. Set at the edge of a wildlife preserve with views of a distant moraine, the house has exposed structural framing and raised battens reminiscent of early 20th century farm buildings. French doors open to a large back porch, which looks out over fields, prairie, woodlot, wildlife preserve, and moraines. Interior flooring, cabinets, and furniture were custom designed for their specific location and built of cherry and oak harvested from the woodlot. Within the main room of the house, three walls of windows flood the interior with light. Vaulted ceilings in the main room create an feeling of openness. A massive cherry sofa, dining table, and wood stove anchor the living space. The furniture throughout the house was hand-crafted.

We are 2.5 hours north of Chicago and 40 minutes south of Madison in a very lovely, rural area. We are surrounded on 3 sides by wildlife refuge, so the guesthouse is secluded and peaceful. A short drive away are the charming villages of New Glarus, Monticello, and Monroe, with excellent restaurants, antique shops, galleries. Wonderful bike trails are next to the farm, and the quiet rural roads offer good road biking as well.
