Why The Owner chose Playa Avellana

We chose because of the beauty and biodiversity and the opportunity to make Pura

your own slice of paradise!

  • 5 of 5

My Boyfriend and I recently spent 7 weeks with Gabrielle and Rick in their lovely guest house. What a treat! They are such gracious hosts and their rental was the perfect home away from home! Such lovely people. You not only have a chance to create a nice space to enjoy your vacation, you are also a 5 minute walk from an incredible beach and some world class surf breaks.

The house is comfortable with all the things you would need. It's well ventilated with lots of windows and fans. The bathroom was nice, hot shower, nice breeze. The beds were comfortable and each week we had fresh towels and sheets to spruce up the house. There is air conditioning in the master bedroom that makes for a great night sleep even on the hottest nights or a great place to cool off if you need it. The kitchen is well equipped with a gas range and stove, crockpot, coffee maker, blender, and toaster oven, good size fridge. I cooked all the time and there's even a fresh fish truck that you can have come by on Thursdays! Gabrielle taught me how to make rice and beans and arroz con pollo the first week we arrived and that was such a treat. Nothing better then a home cooked meal enjoyed with a fresh breeze and the sounds of the howler monkeys and birds in the morning. Rick and Gabrielle are there when you need help but really do give you your privacy which is nice. The house has it own driveway and gate and although on the same property feels like it's separated from their home. You're close enough to have easy access to the hosts but very much in your own space. It was a little slice of heaven. I can't wait to go back.

The area is nice and peaceful. Many of the beach areas are built up these days but avellanas still is small and quaint. The beach is beautiful, white sand, shady spots to hang out for the day. Amazing surf (3 beach breaks, a river mouth, and a point break depending on the swell) It's an easy 5-10 min walk to the beach with lots of howler monkeys, birds, and iguanas along the way. You can eat pizza, a great taco, a nice fish dinner all within walking distance of the house. It's not a party town which is wonderful. The people are there for the beach and the peace and quiet. If you want to have a night out you can take a shuttle from the beach to Tamarindo from 8am-6 pm for $5US and there's a bus to Santa Cruz. You don't need to rent a car the whole time which is great.

This place is great! The host incredible, helpful, and kind. I highly recommend staying here.

Excellent Hosts!!

  • 5 of 5

I would highly recommend this quaint, clean property. The beds are comfortable and you have all the comforts of home.

The best part of this lovely piece of paradise is Gabriela and Rick, the owners. They were very knowledgeable about Costa Rica and the Guanacaste area and the most warm & the most friendliest people you would ever meet. I appreciated their hospitality and friendship.

Gabriela took us on walks pointing out trees, animals, flowers and fruit and to the beautiful beach at sunset.

The ocean is a five minute walk away, where you will find some of the greatest surfing in the world.

Thank you Gabriela & Rick for everything you did for me....you are wonderful!!

Great beaches and fantastic hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights here in November and had a great time. Our hosts Rick and Gabriella were great! They were very informative about the area from surf spots to walks around Avellanas. Gabriella was nice enough to also make us, on several occasions, fresh cold fruit smoothies and also gave us limes and papayas grown on the property. If you are looking for great surf, beach and a quiet place to relax then this is the place for you! We would have loved to stay longer but our vacation time was limited, we'll definitely come back for more. If you get a chance try out the honey they also produce, best honey we've had. We've made new friends and found a great place to come back to. Thanks again Rick and Gabriella!

Staying with Rick and Gabby is the best way to see Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

Without a doubt, there is no better place I could have stayed in Costa Rica. When I arrived, they gave me access to a gated driveway and I had fresh sheets on the bed. Not only was the house absolutely magnificant, but the owners are some of the nicest people I have met in any country. They knew the region and told me about different places I should see. Towards the end of my travels, they made a habit of inviting me for breakfeast and cooked me different traditional Costa Rican dishes. Gabriella even taught me enough Spanish so that I could get by in Santa Cruz and Nicoya.

Being a solo traveler, I was hesitant about not knowing any locals or the language, but the owners of this property made me feel at home. I guarantee if you choose this house, you will not regret it. Rick taught me about sustenance farming, while Gabby taught me to cook traditional costa rican dishes in the fully equipped kitchen. When I was sunburnt from a day at the beach, Gabby researched treatments and made me a home remedy to bring down the swelling. I have never met nicer people, and I doubt I ever will. My only fear is that this review is not glowing enough to reciprocate their kindness and hospitality.
