The old house has been in the family for 500 years. We recently renovated it. I lived in the house for the past 2 years. I just got a job in London and so I had to move. The area is very local and you will meet local people if that is what you want. If you want to be alone you can do that too. Its real Ireland
D Lanigan purchased this cottage in 1700
Unique, quiet, peaceful, and you will know you are in Ireland.
Privacy. Old house country cottage feel. Peaceful. Spacious.
We have arrived home ;) Your mom is a love and we loved being in Ireland. We put over 1,000 miles on the car stretching from the Cliffs of Moher to Castles here and there to Waterford to the Wicklow Mountains and then to Dublin. Your country is beautiful and GREEN! :) It was wonderful to have your home to always come back to…never more than (at most with my navigating) a 2:15 drive. We would get home and go for a little stroll and meet up with some very friendly cows! ;) Love the beautiful flowers on the rock walls, and explored the graveyard. We went to pubs and listened to wonderful Irish music and watched Irish dancing at Lanigans!! EVERYONE was so very friendly and helpful….but we did learn that no one knows the names of the streets..because they've lived there for their entire lives…so we identified colleges, Ys, pubs, "a couple streets past….", and I realized that I do the same thing! Pass the dog on the corner, take a right at the second tree on the green.. hee hee ;) Our family had a wonderful, relaxing time together and despite a little bout with the flu for my daughter and me, we are all coming home relaxed, educated, and looking forward to another trip back! Your home is just beautiful! I loved feeling like we were home. You've done such a beautiful job with making it modern, yet keeping the old Irish farmhouse feel. We loved the peace and quiet…and the space for each of us who were coming from different parts of life…finishing a semester abroad, graduation and job hunting, work… it was just what we needed.
I'll say that the only thing missing was being able to meet you! Your mum is just lovely and I could listen to her for hours! Your brother was a sweetheart about suggesting where we could eat, and the boys all went to the pub for some evening fun. They taped the dancers and music for Lynnie and me since we were down-and-out, and we just loved it!!
Thank you for making everything so very easy and relaxed in all of the planning stages! If you are back in the States, look us up! We are very close to NYC and love friends popping in to our home!
The best to you and your family!!
The house is much larger than the pictures appear but just as marvelous! The rooms are beautiful and the living areas are spacious and comfy. There are 2 king beds and 2 double beds. There is one large sofa to sleep on but it is in two pieces and you have to keep pushing it back together. The other sofas are loveseats. Once you get acclimated the house is perfect. The instructions for the appliances could be clearer but through trial and error we figured out which switches turned the cooker, ect. The washer works fairly well. It's small and in an outside building. There were no instructions on where to find the key but my detective husband finally found it. The skylights all open with a pole and can also have the shades pulled down so the early sun doesn't wake you. This was awesome! It could use a DVD player and some movies because the TV reception is very poor. Also I would have liked a newer coffee maker. We couldn't figure out how to use the old fashioned one. Overall I would say it's perfect for two couples and 2 extra people. Unless small children want to sleep together in the 2 extra rooms. It took us about 25 minutes to get to Carrick-on-suir. Also, there are stairs to all bedrooms so a disabled person would need to know that ahead of time.
I had the pleasure of spending Christmas at the old house, a beautiful converted home set in the countryside of Tipperary. If you're looking to get away from it all, to have evenings in front of the fire with a glass of wine in hand (or a hot toddy for that matter!), this is the place for you! Although you may feel far removed from everyone, Kilkenny is just a 20 minute drive away, and you'll be in the midst of small Irish villages. (Think local pubs and bakeries).
The whole experience was topped off with meeting Alice up the road (the mother of the owners of the property). What a character!!! So charming and welcoming, she made you feel like you were in the real heart of Ireland.
A real treat, I can't wait to get back!
My family just returned from a very relaxing stay at the "Old House". The setting is very secluded and private and a great place to return to in the evening after day trips to other sights in the area. I was traveling with my parents (in their 80's), husband, brother and his girlfriend. It was a perfect location for us to go out for the day and allow my parents to stay behind to read and relax. Alice (Diane's mom) was very helpful and even invited my mother out for the afternoon. They visited with her sister and enjoyed a treat of cake and coffee and LOTS of conversation. That gesture meant so much to my mother. It was very easy for us to get to Kilkenny, Cashel, Waterford, Wexford, the coast, and a beautiful area called the V. The house had all of the amenities necessary for a perfect vacation for anyone. Wish I was still there!!!!!!
It was a very good house, which we enjoyed very much. A few things were different than we expected. The house was very difficult to find - better directions (or signage) would have been helpful. Advertising WiFi but then finding out it was a pay for service 3g fob for the computer was disappointing. The grounds were great and the people were great. We loved Kilkenny and it was fun to go to Lanigan's and meet Richard.
We’ve just gotten settled back home and we’re both already missing The Old House and the beautiful country of Ireland. I want to thank you for making things so easy in the planning stages. You understand so well that it’s a big decision to select a home to rent in another country. That said, we felt completely comfortable at every stage and you always responded to emails promptly.
The house itself is even better than it shows in the pictures and we were so comfortable there. We loved getting home from a long day of sightseeing and knowing the Old House would be there. My, (Diane), soaks in the big red claw foot tub after a long day were pure bliss. You and your sister have done an amazing job in renovating the house to have the modern conveniences without losing the wonderful history and character of the house. We’re looking forward to seeing pictures of the home before it was renovated.
The landscaping and natural setting of the house are beautiful and serene. We enjoyed snooping around the other old buildings on the property and on one beautiful evening I just lay on the grass by the stream and listened to the water and the birds. I loved exploring the old cemetery nearby..so peaceful there.
The unexpected bonus was being able to meet you and hear more of the history about the area, your family and the house. You were so much fun and getting to spend the evening with you and your cousin at a hurling match and later at your brother’s pub in Kilkenny was truly a blast for us. Thank you for making us feel a part of your family.
Thank you again for an amazing stay. I know we’ll be back and please know you are always welcome in Arizona.
All our best,
Diane and Paul
The home is lovingly restored by the owners and offers a secluded comfortable stay in the country. Our family enjoyed walking the property and the area. Kilkenny, Carric An Suir, Waterford and Cork are a short drive and the rest of southern Ireland is within easy reach. If you want to spend some peaceful time in a beautiful secure setting you cannot go wrong staying in "the old house"
The pictures although accurate can't really capture the beauty of the place and the people you will meet while there you'll remember for a lifetime.
