About Ken

I grew up in Canada, went to school in Boston and have spent the last 15 years of my life in Kyoto. I fell in love with this city, its temples, shrines and festivals within my first few years here and do believe that I I will be spending the rest of my life in this beautiful and magical city.

Ken purchased this house in 2013

Why Ken chose Kyoto

This house is very close to Gion and Kiyomizu temple, the inspiration for the name. Within minutes of this house, you can find Maiko & Geisha wandering the street, restaurants, bars, temples and shrines. This house is in a wonderful area with amazing neighbours around the house. The house is easily accessible in a quiet and safe neighbourhood.

What makes this house unique

The whole house was completely redesigned, leaving of course & maintaining the original structure and architecture. When renovating, we discovered a beautiful ceiling with fantastic beams hidden behind years and years of plaster. The original 'tsuchi-kabe' earthen walls were also preserved and still exist, though they cannot be seen because the house has been fully insulated. There is a heated floor in the living and dining room. All of the windows are triple paned and there is a beautiful safe, new kitchen and bath available to you.

There are 2 bedrooms (separately accessible) upstairs with a skylight in the stairway for a little more natural light.

Amenities include a 70inch 4K ultraHD TV connected to a PlayStation3 and AppleTV. There are some games, bluerays & DVDs as well a selection of music for you to enjoy.

The living room has massive windows with nice blinds in front to let in lighting from outside or give you privacy when you need. All the windows are triple-paned to give you that extra bit of quiet. Enjoy sitting on the sofas while you enjoy your morning coffee from the Nespresso Coffee machine.

The house was built from ground up yet keeping the original structure. Insulation, triple paned glass, heated floors, high speed internet and the ultimate in comfort and amazing attention to detail were the inspiration for this house. When you're on vacation in another country, why not treat yourself to a wee bit of luxury when you come back from spending a day out sightseeing.

The comforts of 5 STAR luxury in traditional settings.

Amazing experience

  • 5 of 5

It was such a amazing experience in this townhouse for 5 days. Location is perfect and room is cosy. The washing machine saved us lots of trouble.

Ken is definitely a reliable owner. He could think of anything we need and gave us lots of extra help. Kids enjoyed the stay too and they rated here was the best among all places we stayed in Japan in the past two weeks. Thank you very much Ken. We wish we could stay here again next time when we visit Kyoto.

great location and wonderful host!

  • 5 of 5

The unit was nice and clean with some personal touches. The location is perfect for going downtown. Ken was so kind as to greet us and took us around to get acquainted with the neighborhood. The beds were very comfortable. The water pressure was great and Ken had a high quality coffee maker. As Homeaway and VRBO owners ourselves, we were very impressed with Ken and his unit.

Great location, excellent host an great experience

  • 5 of 5

We luckily found this place for family of 6 to stay for our 5 days trip in Kyoto. It turned out to be one of the most valuable memory for our family.

The location was very close to Gion and of course the Kiyomizu temple. With walking distance, there were grocery shopping and convenience/drug stores. All major tourists spots were accessible by the bus/train stations within 5-10 mins walk. We especially enjoyed the walk along the Kamo River in the mornings.

Since we were with 80+ elders, the quality of the stay helped a lot. We were first impressed by the cozy interior design of the house, as well as Ken's sweet message. During our stay, we were able to get his response and help quickly.

Overall, the stay added the culture perspective and fun into the trip. We were happy with the experience.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind comments. It truly was our pleasure to prepare the place for you thanks to all the smooth communication on your part and all the information you were able to provide about the needs of your family to us in advance. I do agree - the location of KiYOMiZU ViLLA was one of the top priorities when deciding to open up this guest house. Centrally located in a vibrant, yet quiet area with access to all of Kyoto's wonderful public transportation within walking distance is what should be available to you if you're staying in a city that you've never been to. We're less than a year old and only intend to improve to make every guest's stay a memorable experience. Thank you, once again, for choosing us to be part of your family's adventure to the wonderful old capital of Japan. We really hope to see you again!!!

Great place, great location,

  • 5 of 5

I actually live in Kyoto and I booked this place for my parents. I knew the location was good, as I wanted somewhere they could check out some sights, and also be close to home for a rest. The actual house was brilliant. Very comfortable for them; great TV, kitchen, showers etc, and heated floors( something that really makes a difference). They loved Kyoto, and I have no doubt the comfort they enjoyed here added to that.

Notes:
The house was rebuilt from ground up leaving only the beautiful frame, roof and support beams. The house is completely insulated and all of the windows have been replaced with beautiful triple paned windows for year round energy efficiency and peace and quiet for you and the neighbours. The new stairway is quite safe. It is now wider and less steep. The bath area and toilet are quite modern. The kitchen is more than functional and offers a safe IH stove for your cooking needs. There are air conditioners and heaters throughout and the floor in the living room is heated. Kyoto is famous for its gruelling summers and harshly cold winters. Kyoto homes are even more famous for their lack of comfortability. KiYOMiZU Villa offers you a Japanese home with all of the luxuries of western living.
