Surprisingly magical spot for a frozen over, family-ski-vacation that wasn't

  • 5 of 5

Our family (2 adults, 6yo, 10yo, and 2 13yo's) chose this location for its size, value, dog-friendliness, opportunity for teens to have own space, and proximity to ski resorts and water park, where we had expected to spend most of our time. Well -- turns out it went to 20 below zero, coldest snap weekend of the season, so too cold to ski, and water park literally broke down. Massive icicles encased the house, going down from roof and up from ground. It looked more like an arctic outpost, flag and all. We skipped all our planned activities, and mostly hunkered down here. So the cottage had to be all-things for our vacation. We laid out on the frozen lake at night, enjoying the perfect quiet and looking at the stars, went sledding around the house, watched snowmobilers during day and lots of movies. In the end, we all loved it! Especially the kids. Mark was great, extremely responsive when we called him to get plowed out, and to point out the sleds, there was even beer in the fridge. Don't expect fancy accommodations, but do expect to have what you need to enjoy time away with your family, even dog. There's a kind of simple magic here. There's no car traffic either, at least not in the winter, and our pup loved the rare freedom to run up and down the lane.

A note to consider -- The cottage packs a lot into a small footprint -- with a very cozy common area (think 1 BR condo size DR/LV/KIT), and then an unusually generous 3 BRs. We were glad we didn't invite another family (which the cottage technically accommodates, and we were thinking of doing) because it would have been really tight during the day, especially at dinner time. We joked that it was a bed-for-10 and chairs-for-4 cottage :). It certainly wouldn't have been too bad if it were summer, as there's a big picnic table and plenty of room out there with the grill. But for us, all of that was encased in about 2 feet of snow :). Thanks again, Mark! Kids are asking about when we'll be going back :)

Nice Peaceful Location/Not as Clean as indicated

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed a relaxing long Labor Day weekend here. There were a lot of toys for the kids for the beach and the house was a nice size, as were the beds and the kitchen. I was pretty disappointed though that the house was not as clean as mentioned in other reviews...There were cobwebs all over the ceiling in the living room, the carpet and floors were dirty. I know this because our socks were filthy after only being there for a couple of hours. Also, my son's book slid under the kitchen table and there was dirt/sand under the table. I was also disappointed to find that the sliding screen door was broken (my husband fixed it as best he could), and the people who were there before us must have had a dog or dogs, because there were dog nose markings all over the sliding glass door (which I cleaned). The house also smelled very strongly of bug spray and dog when we arrived. The stairs to beach are very dangerous. There is no rail to hold onto and there are a lot of uneven steps. I have a 3 and a 6 year old so this stressed me out each time we went to the beach and when we left. I am giving this an average review because we did like the location, and the beach. The kids played in the water all day. Even in the rain. The view was beautiful and they had a lot of supplies there such as many towels, kitchen tools, and plenty of room to move around.

Owner's Response: Shannon, thank you for letting us know that the carpet was in need of care. As you mentioned we do have a very sandy beach and if previous renters did not rinse their feet it can cause the sand to get in the carpet. We are in the process of getting that cleaned. This is our first year renting and with it being rented all summer we knew that their would be some wear and tear hence the screen which is also being replaced so we truly appreciate your review. With that being said we hope that you enjoyed yourself and will return in future. Dione Szydlowski

Relaxing vacation cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful, relaxing vacation - the kids and the dog loved the sandy beach & the shallow water right outside the cottage. The cottage was comfortable and fully stocked with linens, towels and even paper plates and cups to make our stay less stressful. We had a lot of fun taking the canoe around the lake and "fishing" off the dock with our two year old and his new fishing pole (with a plastic hook and fish) although we did hear that the lake also is stocked for those that would want to fish for real. Evenings were relaxing with our bonfires and card games in the cozy family room. We definitely enjoyed our stay and will keep in mind for future family vacations.
