DOWNEAST COASTAL FARMHOUSE WATER VIEW (SLEEPS4)

Steuben House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Ruby house sits on an old downeast coastal farmstead at the head of Pigeon Hill Bay. The house overlooks the salt marsh and inlets of the bay as well as Pigeon Hill, on the scenic Petit Manan peninsula. The home's large farmers porch provides a comfortable viewing spot, rain or shine. Be on the lookout for eagles, osprey, fox and deer. Beautiful flower gardens surrounding the house are a delight of colors and scents. Beyond the gardens and the old barn, green pastures filled with wildflowers and old apple trees attract deer and other wildlife, even moose, particularly early in the morning and around dusk.

Inside, the home's open-concept first floor is warm and welcoming as it surrounds a beautiful beachstone chimney. The kitchen, dining and living areas have plenty of places to relax. The deck off the sunroom is a great place to have a cocktail and watch the sunset over the fields and see nature at its best.

The large first-floor bathroom includes an antique claw-foot tub and pedestal sink and unique cedar and copper shower. Two bedroom areas on the second floor, in the turret a queen size bed and offers peaceful views across the marsh and meadow, the second bedroom has 2 twin beds and a sitting area with book shelf and large closet. A 3/4 wall and stone chimney divides the two rooms ( open concept means no doors on rooms) but still private.

Ruby House is a convenient place to launch day trips throughout the downeast area, whether by bike, boat or car. The location is peaceful, but not remote, and is only a few minutes drive from RT 1.

Ruby House is ideal for families who want to be near, but not directly on the water. You can smell the salt air, hear the lobster boats in the distance, and be on the open water in a kayak in less than 5 minutes. You may not want to leave but if you do.

Take a left at the bottom of the dirveway and walk to Bar Island. At the end you'll get a stunning view of Bois Bubert Island and the open Atlantic. There are several places to launch a kayak or small boats along the road, or you can buy a few lobsters or crabmeat for dinner at Door Lobster Company. Puffin tours and whale watching trips are available in Milbridge, (brochures will be available at the house) or stay on dry land and visit Petit Manan Bird Sanctuary just a few miles down Pigeon Hill road. Activities include, hiking paths to the shore, picking wild blueberries, bird watching, biking the dirt roads, and just enjoying the quietness and beauty of Maine.

Easy kayak portage is minutes from the house or take a picnic and drive to some local lakes including Tunk and Spring River and enjoy swimming and boating. McCellan Park in Milbridge is a beautiful spot to take in the wild ocean tides(try to go at mid tide if you can to get best results. Don't miss the Extreme Makeover Home on Wyman Road.

Drive up the coast 60 miles to Campobello Island, Canada and enjoy the gardens and home of Franklin Rossevelt. Along the way visit famous Quoddy Head Lighthouse.

Barlett Estate Winery, a few miles south of Steuben has wine tastings and tours and you can purchase their wine on site. Call for schedule. Schoodic Point (part of Acadia National Park) in Winter Harbor is a wonderful place to watch the ocean crash onto the rocky shore. Nice shops & places to eat.

The Ruby House was a farm, raising sheep, chickens, pigs for 13 years. Lots of love, happiness baby lambs being born, warm cozy winters by the wood stove, wonderful memories live within the walls of this house and land.

The Owner purchased this house in 1980

I enjoy watching the birds, wildlife and feeling of being close to the ocean, also the sense of community, knowing your neighbors and just enjoy the beauty of rural living, the smell of the salt air as the fog comes up the bay to name a few.

My wife and I just got back from 8 nights at Ruby House, and it was great. The view from the front porch is even better than it seems from the pictures - sitting on the porch, you see the flowers in the front yard, then across the road the meandering river, with the big open sky and wooded hills beyond. We sat on the porch reading books and waving to the drivers of the occasional passing cars, who usually waved back. When we first arrived, it was after dark and there were hundreds of fireflies blinking in the grass nearby.

The house is really well set up. It's two floors, with open floor plans on both. On the first floor the kitchen is near the entry (with a gas stove, microwave, a big sink, toaster, coffee maker, and all the pots, pans and utensils you could possibly need, as well as the antique stove for decorative purposes only). Next is the living room area with a couch and chairs. Beyond that is the dining room with windows all around (it's in the turret-shaped part of the house). Around past that is a sun room that was great for watching the sunset. Finally, back around towards the kitchen is the spacious bathroom with a shower and an antique tub. The stairs lead to the master bedroom area, with a queen bed, and a large open bedroom area with two twin beds and lots of windows on 3 sides. The whole house is very thoughtfully designed and decorated.

The location is great. Like the listing says, it's only a few minutes off Route 1, near the nice town of Milbridge, which has a big grocery store, restaurants (we liked Joshy's Place for lobster rolls and ice cream, and Vasquez Mexican Food, totally unexpected in Down East Maine but great), post office, and the town museum (great exhibits on fishing and shipbuilding). We ended up meeting a bunch of Milbridge residents and really enjoyed the feeling of community - everyone we met seemed to know everyone else!

It was easy to go from there on day trips, like up the coast to Canada (namely Campobello Island, where you can see FDR's "cottage") or down to Bar Harbor, where you can have a taste of the tourist craziness and then return to your quiet. We also hiked Pigeon Hill, which doesn't take long but gets you a great view of the coast and the ocean.

The owner was very responsive and friendly. The house was clean and everything was in working order.

I would definitely recommend Ruby House if you're looking for a convenient, charming and quiet place to stay near the Maine coast.
