Teesdale:
A beautiful and unspoilt world, the land of the Prince Bishops where the medeival Bishops of Durham ruled like Kings over their frontier lands near the Scottish Border. Lartington is an easy one and a half hour drive to the Lake District, the historic cities of Durham and Newcastle or the dales and the coast. The Prince Bishops had their own armies, courts, nobility and coinage and left behind a fascinating legacy. Discover the joys of driving on the open roads devoid of traffic or walking along the Pennine Way to High Force, England's highest waterfall. This is Herriot & Yorkshire Dales Country and the Bronte Sisters and Wuthering Heights. . Follow in the footsteps of the famous earlier visitors to Teesdale - Charles Dickens, Sir Walter Scott, Oliver Cromwell, the great landscape painter Turner. The east coast seaside with Captain Cook's birthplace at Whitby is approx 100 kilometers away.
Horse Riding, Sailing, Canoeing, Fishing, Golf:
Experience the excitement of sailing, canoeing or water skiing on uncrowded reservoirs, the exhilaration of pony trekking through heather or forest, or the quiet relaxation of fishing on the Lartington Estate waters and in unspoilt Ancient Woods a perfect hideaway and an added attraction for those who like to combine fishing with painting and leisurely walks along a delightful unspoilt valley. Riding and livery stables are nearby or self-livery on the Estate. Barnard Castle Golf Course overlooking the historic market town is quite challenging partly because of the small becks (streams) which abound on the course. It is not unusual to see deer and other wildlife during a round. I would strongly recommend this course.
Gardens and Flora:
The house has magnificent views of a Classic English Parkland with mature Oaks and Cedars of Lebanon and is at the heart of a private agrarian estate. In Teesdale you can find rare species including gentians on the sugar limestone at Cow Green, Alpine strawberries at Boolihope, Frog Orchids, Adders Tongue Fern and Moonwort.
