Castelnuovo Berardenga Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description
Farmhouse, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 8-11)
Il Colombaio di Montebenichi is an ancient traditional Tuscany farmhouse originally built in the year 1232. It is only steps away from the quaint hamlet of Montebenichi on a hilltop at about 500 meters above sea level, with breathtaking views, and only 20 minute card drive from Siena.
This villa rental with pool is surrounded by a beautiful and unspoiled natural environment, in the very heart of Tuscany, at the south-eastern border of the Chianti, a world renown wine area. It dominates a valley called “the Valdambra”, which has preserved the integrity and beauty of its territory.
The villa was renovated in 2002 with successive renovations in 2005 and 2011. The interior is decorated in typical Tuscan style mixed with modern touches for comfort and design, where wood is predominant.
One of its strong points is the wonderfully unique living area, with vaulted ceilings, originally built in the middle ages, stone walls, and yet full of light (all windows and doors have screens, so you can keep the windows open without fear for flying insects to come in!).
The master suite contains its own private bath and air conditioning, a second bedroom has a comfortable queen bed, a third bedroom has a queen bed and a twin bunk bed, with the fourth one containing 2 twin beds for children. There is an additional upstairs room with a sofa bed and an adjacent gym area, and computer area.
The house has been conceived in order to be enjoyed both inside and outside, with a large gazzebo/terrace by the barbeque grill (all thew wood you can use for free), a fantastic “loggia” or balcony for sitting and relaxing while taking in breathtaking views, and the pool area for playing, swimming and sunbathing.
The medieval village of Montebenichi has an ancient history and it is set in a spiral shape going upwards, with two castles, two churches, a luxury hotel relais and a great family owned Tuscany restaurant, typically known as “trattoria”, that was rated with one star in the Michelin Guide, where food is fantastic and reasonably priced.
The villa has unspoiled views that reach all the way to the mountains and the sea, perched above the valle of the river Ambra, which is a tributary of the well known Arno river that flows through Florence. The surrounding area is a peaceful and productive landscape with woods, vineyards, olive trees and active wildlife, scattered with villages and castles, and at every turn a splendid panoramic view.
The house location is ideal for who loves nature, as from the house, there are several trekking tracks that take you in the the woods and allow you to enjoy first hand the nature around you. At the same time is near most of the important historical cities in Tuscany: Florence (1 hour), Siena (20 minutes), Peruggia (1 hour), Arezzo (45 minutes).
From Montebenichi, the Chianti road winds around woods, olive groves and vineyards taking you to medieval villages, imposing castles, and wineries. It takes 40 minutes to drive to either of two world renown wine areas such as Montalcino (important for its Brunello) in the south west and Montepluciano (known for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano) in the south east of Tuscany, and of course you are all ready in Chianti.
Slightly south of Montebenichi, you find the “Crete Senese”, an extraordinary and unique land known for its clay lomes (which give it its name), unique views and the thermal spa town of Rapolano, with its natural hot springs of sulphuric-calcium thermal waters that come out of the ground at 38°C. It takes 20 minutes by car drive to get to the two spa resorts in Rapolano Terme.
The house is located 1 hour drive from Florence and Florence airport, 2 hours from Pisa and 2 1/2 hours from Rome’s airport and 20 minutes from Siena.

About The Owner
For more than 10 years Il Colombaio has been home to Valeria Bottazzi, her husband and her two sons. Despite being let for the last years, the house retained its character of being a primarily private permanent home. In June 2014, Valeria sold the House to Michael Semler, born 1946 in Munich/ Germany. Michael grew up in Germany and the UK. As a trained lawyer, specialized in international tax-law he became an international investment consultant and opened companies in Munich and St. Louis/Missouri. They accompanied many European companies, largely mid-sized family held companies, on their ways through mergers and acquisition in the USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentinia, Europe and Africa.
In 1987, Michael sold the companies to one of the major international consulting firms. Michael returned to his great love, Africa, and tried for two decades to bring peace and prosperity to this rich continent, working for private organizations as well as for the UN on peace making and peace keeping missions. Michael continues to travel to Africa, today specialized in legal issues on land ownership, protection against land grabbing and better justice in land ownership.
The Owner purchased this farmhouse in 2014
Why The Owner chose Castelnuovo Berardenga
From the age of a toddler Michael came to Italy, every summer for at least six weeks, to a house on the island of Elba, where the family rented an old napoleon villa near the sea for almost two decades. Through his close friendship to imminent art-history professor Bernhard Berenson (Harvard) Father Semler became a hobby-art-historian. Trips to Italy therefore were never holidays only for Michael; they were often extensive tours through the history and art history of Italy. For decades there had been a strong desire in Michael to own a house in Italy, preferably in Southern Tuscany. Michael is a keen cook and loves the wine. But he equally loves the art, and the Muisic. All his life, Michael has been travelling extensively, often to the least desirable, hot, dirty places. Michael felt that time had come to sit down and dig deeply into the art history of Italy. A multi-lingual library will soon grow in La Colombaia. Italian literature and Film during the last three decades might well, be one of the most interesting in the world. This will be another area of intense research. But Michael also feels that there is such a mass of experience, positive and negative, he has enjoyed during his life, that he hopes to be able to put this into one or more books in Il Colombaio.
Il Colombaio will therefore remain a house almost permanently lived in. Valerie offered all her extensive experience in letting the villa when not needed, and thus Michael agreed that the house can be let during times he continues to travel somewhere around the world, or not needed by his two daughters. This implies that Il Colombaio will never be a sterile Hotel but it will breathe the spirit and taste of those loving, ownig, and living in it. It will breathe the individuality of the owner and we would be grateful if, to the extent possible, you will respect this individuality. Then, Michael enjoys the opportunity to share the beauty of this place with you.
What makes this farmhouse unique
Il Colombaio has a unique setting and location. While staying at the villa you feel as if you were in the middle of nowhere with unspoiled views all the way to the mountain range and the sea, yet you are truthfully only 300 meters form the quaint town of Montebenichi and 10 minutes from Ambra and Castelnuovo Berardenga, two villages that have all the services you might need.
It will only take you 20 minutes to drive to Siena, and one hour to drive to Florence. There are plenty of activities to do in the area, trekking courses departing from the farmhouse, wine tasting (we can even organize for you to have a wine tasting done at the villa!), spa treatements and thermal waters, horseback riding, biking, you name it…
We live only 15 minutes away, so you can rest assured that if you need something we are only a phone call away.
The ambiance of the house is typically Tuscany, with vaulted ceilings, lots of windows with wonderful views, stone walls, and decoration is a combination of Tuscan country style and modern in order to cover for today’s needs and comforts.
You can rest assured you will have everything you need for a comfortable stay and in particular for cooking!!!
We will be delighted to host you at Il Colombaio!
Guestbook comments from the owner
My friends and I rented Il Colombaio for 5 days in October and were extremely impressed by everything inside and outside the villa. The pool was glorious and Valeria even had Cheese and Prociuto waiting for us in the fridge. The rooms were clean and spacious and our only regret is that we could not spend more time at the villa. I would definately recommend it to anyone visiting the region.
