I, Philip Marchand and my wife Jocelyn are the owners of the John Edwards House as of October 2012. My mother Peg Femino Camarda bought this house in 2004 and soon after started using it as a vacation rental to supplement her Bed and Breakfast that she ran next door. She opened The Henry Derby House bed and breakfast in 2001 in the house we grew up in after my sister and I moved out. My mother had a passion for business ventures and a joy for life like no one else. She put everything she had into growing her businesses and maintaining these two properties, and loved every minute of it. A lifelong Salem resident, my mother Peg had plenty of stories to share with guests at the B&B and travelers from all over loved hearing them. Although she worked harder than most people I know it never seemed like work for her, as she was always happy doing it. My grandfather's motto that he passed on to her was 'every day is a holiday' and she truly lived by those words. After a brief battle with cancer, my mom Peg passed away on September 5; she was only 56 years old. My wife and I have vowed to carry on my mother's dream and run her businesses as she had hoped to do for many more years. Although sooner than expected, I am excited at the opportunity of taking over the B&B as well as the John Edwards House vacation rental. I am a full-time letter carrier at the Salem Post Office and have been employed there for 10 years. Also a life long Salem resident I grew up in the home that is currently the B&B and lived there until I was 22. I am back in the Henry Derby House living with my wife Jocelyn and our son Xander. I love living in Salem and plan on staying here as long as possible.
Jocelyn Marchand purchased this house in 2004
My mother chose to make a vacation rental out of this property because it is right next to her bed and breakfast. She always loved this house and when our neighbors moved and put the house on the market she jumped at the chance to own it. She originally was going to move in and live their to be close to the B&B but later decided to try renting it as a vacation rental. I also lived in this house for a year after it was purchased and love it.
By staying at the John Edwards Vacation Rental you will enjoy being right in downtown Salem. It is a first floor unit that overlooks a beautiful cottage garden. Even though you are right in downtown Salem, when you are in the garden you would never know it. The John Edwards House is a great place for families, or adults traveling together. It is truly your home away from home.
We rented the John Edwards House when our daughter was getting married in the area. It was the perfect fit for our needs. We were all from out of state and it was fun to come together for the days leading up to the event. We had the bridal party and some of my family staying there. I even hosted a brunch the day after the wedding for both families. The kitchen is well equipped, the bedrooms are comfortable and very attractive. We all gathered around the dining room table for meals and games. What I appreciated the most was how helpful Phil and Jocelyn were as I planned for the stay. They live right next door so they are available if any needs arise. I would recommend this house to anyone wanting to stay in the Salem area with a large group.
The John Edwards house was wonderful! Very clean, had everything we needed and great location. Jocelyn and Phillip are so kind and welcoming. They made our stay in Salem awesome!
Great location! Plenty of beds: two kings, three queens, two twins and a futon! Three full baths! Two kitchens. A/C in all bedrooms. Close to things you want to see and do in Salem. Jocelyn and her team (husband, mother) were great and easy and right next door! If there was a single complaint, is that there is really no common area except a nice sized dining room. That was fine for us. We would all do it all again! thank you!
Convenient to restaurants, shops, grocer, post office, sights
Beautiful landscape and patio
Off street parking
My wife and I wanted to have a beautiful autumn wedding and love Halloween so we planned a destination wedding across country. We had a small group of friends and family that wanted to come and be apart of our wedding. Most of them had never been to Ma or Salem. This house was perfect. We had plenty of room. Everyone was able to spread out and have enough space for one another. The 2 bedrooms on the first floor are huge!! The 2nd floor there is enough room for 3 to 4 guests and the 3rd floor there is 3 more beds as well. By the end of our stay some of our guests had left early so the remainder of our guests got to move around a little and try out some of the other rooms and they thought this house was the greatest!! My mother in law didn't want to leave. There is a big kitchen on the first floor and a kitchenette on the second floor. It was nice in the morning everyone wasn't crowding downstairs to grab coffee or breakfast. The weather while we where there was just spectacular. The backyard is so beautiful, with a patio table you can just sit in the back and look at all the beautiful flowers and listen to the tress blowing in the wind. It was very relaxing. The hospitality of the owners of the house was fantastic! They also own the Henry Derby House that is right next door. If at anytime you need anything they are there for your assistance. Being in October and the second to last weekend of the month. It is extremely fun and very busy in Salem, the house was in a perfect location of everything. The town itself is really not that big, the weather kept changing so it was nice for our guests to be able to just run back to the house and change or grab something if they needed it. Since it was our wedding and we had a few couples that were local and it being the busiest and the best time to be in Salem, parking was a bit of an issue. The owners again with there great hospitality gave our guests parking which was a relief. The house was very clean and all the linens and towels you needed. The really nice part about the house is if you are staying longer than a few days, right around the corner there is a small grocery store and liquor store in the event of needing something. If you end up with to many souvenirs there is also right across the street from the store is a post office. This house will forever be a great memory and a wonderful part in my destination wedding. I thank again the wonderful hospitality of the owners and staff that made our trip!
My husband and I rented this property for 3 months during the winter to be near a family member who is ill.
We feel grateful that we found Peg and Frank and this rental at this time in our lives.
The warmth and helpfulness of the owners and all employees creates a sense of friendliness and welcome. Some qualities are hard to measure. We comment frequently on how positive the space feels to be in. We feel comfortable and at home in this space.
The beds are great. This kitchen is easy to work in and the appliances good.
Peg and Frank and everyone who work for them are responsive if any problem presents itself which only happened as a result of intense winter weather.
There is a also a feeling of privacy and being in your own space.
The location is perfect as it is so close to town.
It was hard to leave. We look forward to the next opportunity to return.
We definitely recommend this rental.
