Photos and Description of the Laupahoehoe vacation estate rental
Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Hamakua Green-house is a newly renovated, very clean, 2 bedroom, 2 bath home on 14 acres of rolling hills. It has a large lanai with commanding 180 degree panoramic ocean views from 1700 foot elevation. It sits on the slopes of Mauna Kea, 2.5 miles above Laupahoehoe town, on the scenic Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Go green in style in this meticulously maintained, luxury off-grid property with all new appliances, beds, linens, dish-ware, and furniture. A custom built, solar powered, automatic gate assures your privacy and security.

Hamakua Green-house is a great base of operations to explore everything the Big Island has to offer. Sight-see the scenic Hamakua coast waterfalls, an erupting volcano at Volcanoes National Park, majestic Waipio valley, or white sandy beaches (on the Kona side of the island). Return home to your own private oasis on the mountain, to relax in the peaceful setting and endless ocean views, sipping local coffee, while you kick back and wait for rainbows. Take a walk around the very private 14 acres, see the 43' seasonal waterfall located on the property and breath in the commanding 180 degree ocean views.

Newly remodeled, both bedrooms have extremely comfortable queen beds. The master has its own tub and shower, and the second bedroom has a brand new adjoining bathroom and shower. There is a sofabed in the living room if needed, and a loft with a twin sized blow-up mattress.

This luxury cottage is the perfect romanic getaway or family vacation retreat for discriminating travelers. Avoid the crowds and see all the beauty of the Big Island as if it were your own second home.

Please note that there is no television at the Hamakua Green-house, by design. We bring our laptop and DVDs, but enjoy being disconnected from television. There is an iPod docking station so bring your iPod/music. There is 3G cell phone reception for Verizon, ATT, and others at the house, and we often use USB-based cell modems with laptop computers while there. Please check with your provider about coverage.

We suggest staying at least a week to give yourself time to explore the entire Big Island and to relax at this wonderful property.

About Kristine or Rick

We love visiting our second home as a getaway from busy Honolulu. It is serene and the views are endless. The house sits on 14 very private acres and is accessable from a newly repaved road. Come and share our family getaway and experience the peace for yourself.

Kristine or Rick purchased this estate in 2009
Why Kristine or Rick chose Laupahoehoe

We chose this property for the views, cooler climate, privacy, and not as much rainfall as Hilo town. It also has organic farming potential.

We love Laupahoehoe and the whole Hamakua Coast. It is only 30 minutes away from Hilo or Honokaa, an hour from Volcanoes National Park or Waimea, and minutes to many Hamakua coast attractions.

What makes this estate unique

Off-the-grid does not mean a lack of luxury at this cottage. All our power comes from a PV system with a new state-of-the-art back-up diesel generator that automatically turns on if the battery level gets too low. However, this rarely happens as the 18 solar panels usually provide all the power needed. All our water comes from a new water catchment system with double filters down to 5 microns and a UV filter. Yet we didn't scrimp on comfort and the luxuries of home. It is a wonderful base from which to explore all of the Big Island, and from which to take long, leisurely hikes and walks.

Great home away from home!

Being our first experience with vrbo, we didn't know what to expect. The owners were very clear in their expectations and very easy to work with. The house itself was a great get-away. It was super clean, comfortable and had all the amenities you would need for a long stay. The gas grill was awesome and all of the appliances were new. We loved the idea of an "off the grid" house and never had any problems. It made us think more about conservation.
It does get a bit cool at times so bring a light jacket. But the fireplace helps a lot.
It was a great place to relax after a busy day. We would love to return again soon!

We has a great time. The house was very nice, clean and comfortable. You can see the ocean from the house. We even spotted a whale one day. Since we were there in February, it did get chilly at night, the gas heater kept it nice and warm. It does have new apploances. It was a great placeo get away from it
all. It wasn't to far of a drive to Hilo or Kona. The sights and the beauty of Hawaii is awesome. We had a great trip.Everything that was listed about the property was to the letter. Go to Pescatori Italian Restaurant in Hilo it is small family owned and quite charming. Tropical dreams coffee and ice cream in Hawi. Bubba gumps in Kona for dinner and for the sunset. Watch for rainbows they appear everywhere. Shopping at the farmers markets is fun. Akaka falls, Waipaio valley, volcanoes, the botanical garden off Hwy 19, the orchid garden close to the volcanoe park and Black sand beach are things you want to see. Just seeing the difference in each side of the island is great one side being rainforest and the other is dry and arid. The beauty of God's creation is truly spectacular in Hawaii.
I would reccommend this property to anyone wanting a place of solitude, far enough but not to far from things to do.

We loved staying in this beautiful, comfortable house. The views were amazing and it was so quiet and peaceful. The house was very clean and well equiped, except for a gas grill to cook on. We were able to pick bananas for breakfast!! The nearby sights were well worth the time and the little 50's dinner at the bottom of the hill was great complete with live entertainment on the weekends! We got a feel for the "real Hawaii" . We would love to come back and stay "someday"!

Hawaiian Vacation

This is a wonderful second home. We have rented twice previously on the Big Island and this home was was the best by far. The Owners would appear to be detail oriented so the house has been very well thought out and maintained. The kitchen is well furnished for cooking at home it that is your desire. No traffic noise like many other rentals close to the highway. The house is not really close to anything (a plus) but then it is the Big Island and nothing is close to everything. The waterfall was not flowing during our rental but that is becasue the weather was great. If you cannot relax here, there is no hope for you. Bring a good book, I recommend Mark Twain's "Letters from Hawaii." We loved our time here.
