Overview

Laupahoehoe Estate Rental Photos and Description

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Hamakua Green-house is a newly renovated, very clean, 2 bedroom, 2 bath home on 14 acres of rolling hills. It has a large lanai with commanding 180 degree panoramic ocean views from 1700 foot elevation. It sits on the slopes of Mauna Kea, 2.5 miles above Laupahoehoe town, on the scenic Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. Go green in style in this meticulously maintained, luxury off-grid property with all new appliances, beds, linens, dish-ware, and furniture. A custom built, solar powered, automatic gate assures your privacy and security.

Hamakua Green-house is a great base of operations to explore everything the Big Island has to offer. Sight-see the scenic Hamakua coast waterfalls, an erupting volcano at Volcanoes National Park, majestic Waipio valley, or white sandy beaches (on the Kona side of the island). Return home to your own private oasis on the mountain, to relax in the peaceful setting and endless ocean views, sipping local coffee, while you kick back and watch rainbows. Take a walk around the very private 14 acres, see the 43' seasonal waterfall located on the property and breath in the commanding 180 degree ocean views.

Newly remodeled, both bedrooms have extremely comfortable queen beds. The master has its own tub and shower, and the second bedroom has a brand new adjoining bathroom and shower. There is a sofabed in the living room if needed, and a loft with a twin sized blow-up mattress.

This luxury cottage is the perfect romanic getaway or family vacation retreat for discriminating travelers. Avoid the crowds and see all the beauty of the Big Island as if it were your own second home.

Please note that there is no television at the Hamakua Green-house, by design. We bring our laptop and DVDs, but enjoy being disconnected from television. There is an iPod docking station so bring your iPod/music. There is 3G cell phone reception for Verizon, ATT, and others at the house, and we often use USB-based cell modems with laptop computers while there. Please check with your provider about coverage.

We suggest staying at least a week to give yourself time to explore the entire Big Island and to relax at this wonderful property.

About Kristine or Rick

We love visiting our second home as a getaway from busy Honolulu. It is serene and the views are endless. The house sits on 14 very private acres and is accessable from a newly repaved road. Come and share our family getaway and experience the peace for yourself.

Kristine or Rick purchased this estate in 2009

Why Kristine or Rick chose Laupahoehoe

We chose this property for the views, cooler climate, privacy, and not as much rainfall as Hilo town. The property has an amazing 43' seasonal double waterfall. It also has organic farming potential and we are developing an orchard with future plans for coffee and/or tea.

We love Laupahoehoe and the whole Hamakua Coast. It is only 30 minutes away from Hilo or Honokaa, an hour from Volcanoes National Park or Waimea, and minutes to many Hamakua coast attractions.

What makes this estate unique

Off-the-grid does not mean a lack of luxury at this cottage. All our power comes from a PV system with a new state-of-the-art back-up diesel generator that automatically turns on if the battery level gets too low. However, this rarely happens as the 18 solar panels usually provide all the power needed. All our water comes from a new water catchment system with double filters down to 5 microns and a UV filter. Yet we didn't scrimp on comfort and the luxuries of home. It is a wonderful base from which to explore all of the Big Island, and from which to take long, leisurely hikes and walks.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved the beautiful ocean views and quiet setting. What a great place to escape the busy life in Honolulu. The place was spotless and everything was so well kept. Thank you for sharing your second home with us.

My husband and I are already looking forward to coming back.

Wonderful view of night sky and ocean expanse.

Great view of the full moon! Fun to eat breakfast of local bananas and fresh pineapple and local

coffee with rising mist of the ocean in full view over the hill. Darren, the caretaker, was very

helpful and shared macademia nuts, sugar cane and bananas with us. Appreciated washer, dryer and

gas stove. Hand washed dishes, so didn't use dish washer. Comfortable beds and puffy covers. Warm

showers. Appreciated focus on off grid sustainability. Snorkles beach chairs, and cooler available.

Can't wait to come back!

If you are weary of the crowded condo/hotel scene, this is the place for you. It is truly off the grid, in fact and in feel. The location is VERY quiet and remote, but only a few minutes off the ring road of the Island. Nevertheless, the house has all the amenities you would expect from a pricier accommodation: washer/dryer, fridge, full set of utensils, plates, cooking ware, glasses, etc.; gas stove and fireplace (stand-alone stove for taking off that rare chill in early morning), spacious bathrooms, convenient kitchen area, lovely living room, and lots of windows for ventilation when needed and to enjoy the view. And what a view! Wake up in the morning to a million-dollar view of the Pacific Ocean and the forest between the house and Laupahoehoe. I was able to sit on the veranda and whale-watch before even showering. And "off the grid" does not mean out of cell phone range--I was able to get full coverage on two carriers' networks, including data and voice. The grounds surrounding the house will make you feel you are Lord of the Manor! Fruit trees, forests, and cattle grazing in nearby pastures, all without another human in sight or to be heard. After dark, I could only spot two dim lights far in the distance to the east. Altogether this house and its property will provide a truly relaxing escape from work/society/etc without letting go of any creature comforts. I have stayed in several rental properties in the Islands--this is the best I have experienced. The owners were very responsive in answering questions about potential activities and attractions in the area. I hope to book this property in the future!

Beautiful Laupahoehoe property

  • 5 of 5

My husband, daughter (1 year old), and I stayed here for 4 nights this week. The view is gorgeous and the whole place is so peaceful. The deck has amazing views of the hills and ocean. We drank coffee on the deck every morning and grilled there in the evening.

Our daughter enjoyed walking the grounds as did we. There are fruit trees on the property and the caretaker brought us avocados. He also gave us fresh tomatoes.

One thing that we overlooked when booking this is that there is no microwave (we assumed because it is off grid). It was not a problem we just did not realize it. The stove/oven are full sized and there is a grill outside so one hardly misses the microwave.

We'll be saving this listing to book again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. We are glad you had such a great time at our home away from home. We absolutely love it there. The views are endless and it is so peaceful. You are correct, there is no microwave by design as they are so power consuming. We do have all other new appliances one can imagine, including full size range/oven, toaster, gas BBQ grill, blender, coffee machines (French press and drip), and a well stocked set of other kitchen supplies. There are also new stacking washer/dryer, vacuum, hair dryer and other items for use of guests. Aloha, R&K

Beautiful Place

  • 5 of 5

The highlight for my family (girls ages 6 and 8) was the waterfall on property. It's a short, very jungle-feeling hike up the stream to a surprisingly high waterfall. There were mosquitoes waiting for us there, but even they couldn't ruin the experience. The home itself is in very good condition, my kids enjoyed the loft area, and the views of the ocean, when clear, are beautiful. Good access to things like Akaka Falls and Wapio Valley. We also recommend the farmers market in Laupahoehoe. One thing to be aware of is the weather. For us, it was rainy and cool (lows around 60, highs in the mid to upper-60s) for most of our three days. I'm not sure how common that is this time of year, but since it was only for part of our trip, we didn't mind. The plus-side of that is that it's all very lush and green. Overall, we loved this place.
