This was once the summer writer's retreat of well known author, Earle Stanley-Gardner. Come experience a bit of history.
Lucky for me, my parents moved our family to Idyllwild and into this house when I was a child. I was lucky enough to be afforded the opportunity to grow up in this amazing town. I grew up writing poetry on the deck with only moonlight to illuminate the page, climbing rocks, building snowmen and having many snowball fights with my brother and sister. There were many 'White Chirstimas' mornings and Thanksgiving day hikes. My family still gathers at the house to share laughter, love and tales of life's experiences. It is a place we will always call home and I am excited to share it with you.
Ida purchased this lodge in 1976
This home was built in 1945, by Lou Britton and has since been owned by the Famous Mystery Author, Earle Stanley Gardner, whose ownership created a local nickname of 'The Mystery Cabin.' I try to create that same sense of awe upon your arrival that I felt as a child walking through the giant wood door and looking up onto the sky high knotty pine ceilings! Wow!
Five minute walk to the centre of Idyllwild's restaurants, shopping, music, and art galleries. The homeowner's family has vacationed and lived in Idyllwild for over 46 years and is committed to providing you and your family with personal service to optimmize your stay with us.
This was a wonderful rental. Enough room for a large family or group of friends. The hot tub was the best I've ever experienced...very private and under the stars. The house backs up to a private hillside. Ida was a gracious host. The homemade banana bread and fresh flowers were a lovely touch. Wonderful views, lots of dishes, fresh squeezed o.j., and bathrobes for all. Idyllwild is a quaint little town with nice shops & friendly people. An easy drive from Los Angeles. I highly recommend!
This is our 2nd time staying at this comfortable cabin full of all the amenities you could possibly need. The kitchen is equipped with everything imaginable, including a juicer and fresh oranges for a refreshing morning treat. And gazing at the stars while relaxing in the jacuzzi is a perfect end to the day. It is also a short 10/15 minute walk into town. We also enjoy the fresh banana bread and fresh flowers that are awaiting your arrival. Ida is awesome to work with and makes the whole trip easy and enjoyable from beginning to end.
We were pleasantly surprised with flowers in each room, a banana bread filled basket, fresh oranges to juice and robes for us to use. The house itself was perfect for our weekend but Ida has the touch. She cares about who is using the home she grew up in. We were 5 adults and 2 children. The house is spacious and well equipped! The hot tub is perfectly situated for evening star gazing. All was clean and working properly. The location was ideal for going to town . We wil definetly be back. Thank you again, Ida.
What a fun trip. Owner was easy to contact and responded to all inquires in a timely fashion. The reservation process was easy and straight forward. Owner had excellent communication prior to arrival. Upon arrival we were welcomed with fresh oranges to squeeze for OJ, home-baked banana bread, a special gift for our toddler, and a clean, well stocked home. All from our group were thrilled with the house and the location. The kitchen had absolutely everything you could need for cooking. The spa was incredible to sit in at night under the stars. We had absolutely no complaints and would highly recommend.
The only thing I would mention that we may have missed in the house description but that did not matter to us anyway is that the two upstairs bedrooms have no doors, but do have thick privacy drapes to close across the entryway. Our party of 6 adults and 4 kids absolutely loved the whole experience.
I searched many homes and decided this would be the perfect place for our New Year's Eve celebration with 3 other couples. The home was spacious with plenty of room for everyone. It had snowed right before our arrival which made it even more special. We had planned a prime rib dinner that evening and when Ida told us the kitchen was well equipped that was an understatement! Everything imaginable was at hand including a juicer for the fresh oranges that were left there for our use as well as the freshly baked delicious moist banana bread. The dining table seats 10 and was great for our Holiday meal and also for playing games. Our friends decided that my husband and I should have the master bedroom since we took care of all the arrangements. It was huge with a sitting room, a big screen TV , a tub with separate shower and 2 big cozy red robes. The other 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms were very nice with robes as well. We were all thrilled with the jacuzzi which felt amazing with the fresh cold air hitting our faces while the hot bubbly water kept the rest of our bodies nice and toasty. If you like to walk it is a short distance to town. Ida is very accommodating and makes sure that no detail has been spared, we all felt at home the moment we stepped through the door. If you have any questions or concerns she is very prompt with correspondence. I/we would definitely recommend this home for any type of getaway, you will not be disappointed, this home has everything you could ever want or need and then some. Thanks Ida!
My husband and I, and our 2-year old stayed at this wonderful cabin for just two nights and wish it would have been longer! Everything about the experience was great. The cabin itself was perfect-cozy, big enough to move around and let the little one run around (we didn’t even really go up to the upstairs bedrooms), great fireplace, every amenity you can think of…the Jacuzzi at night under the stars was so awesome—complete with cozy robes to run back to the house in! It is close to the downtown, but far enough away that you feel like you’re not near a town. Wonderful decks where we ate lunch and such a beautiful view of the mountains. Ida was fabulous and the process was seamless. The fresh flowers, fresh-squeezed OJ and scrumptious banana bread (which my husband gobbled up immediately) were the icing on the cake. I hadn’t ever been to Idyllwild and it was beautiful. We drove about 15 minutes to Fulmer Lake and took the walk. I wish we could have done more hikes because the surrounding area looked so great, but with a toddler we decided to stick around the cabin, and we had just as much fun watching Christmas movies on the huge TV! We would definitely rent this cabin again-it really was perfect!
Take the Palm Springs Aerial Tram up the mountain and hike down the trail into Idyllwild. Southern California Wine Country (Temecula) is a short 45-60 min. drive and also provides lots of antique shopping in Old Town.
