Property Summary:

This private, gated getaway on 13 acres is located in the scenic southern zone of Costa Rica in the quaint town of Ojochal. In addition to a panoramic view of the Ojochal Valley, mountains and ocean, the home is surrounded by 2 acres of landscaped gardens and home to many different varieties of birds. Quiet and relaxing with beautiful views from every window, plunge pool and terrace, this home cannot be seen from the road and is built on a natural plateau.

This property is truly a nature lover’s paradise. While sipping your morning coffee on the terrace see geckos, iguanas, hummingbirds, while listening to the parrots in the nearby trees and the howler monkeys in the rainforest.

We have a full time caretaker living on the property at the gate house that you can call on if need be.

The elevation is cooler than at sea level, the ceiling fans in every room and outside are usually sufficient for comfort. The kitchen is fully equipped however; if you don't feel like cooking there are several excellent restaurants in the area. We'll be glad to let you know a few of our favorites.

The Ojochal area offers the three prized elements of Costa Rica, endless empty beaches, the tropical rain forest, and the tropical cloud forest along the ridge. We are only minutes from our villa to the Pan American Highway, the breathtaking beaches along the coastline, and the incredible restaurants of Ojochal. There is a small store in Ojochal as well as supermarkets in Uvita (20 minutes away).

There are numerous activities available nearby. Cano Island is famous for diving and snorkeling. You can arrange zip-line canopy tours (try Osa Ziplining), whale watching, kayaking, horseback riding, birding, and numerous other activities and tours. A day trip to Corcovado National Park is possible, and Manuel Antonio, the most visited national park in the country, is an hour and a half away. Boruca, a mountain village named after the indigenous people who live there, is about an hours’ drive away. Crafts, such as the masks and woven purses and backpacks that you will see in many shops in CR can be purchased from the native artists in the village.

Why Barbara chose Ojochal

Ojochal Our property although within the village offers a little more piece and quiet than Uvita and Dominical. We have some of the best restaurants in the area. The town has quite a few French speaking families from Quebec. A great French baker as well as a few little shops and a grocery store. The wildlife is wonderful as well. A great place to relax and be with nature. Beaches are very close and very private. This is why we chose to buy here.

We LOVE this house. For the value, location and comfort we found this to be the perfect spot for us. Beautiful gardens that we enjoyed tremendously from the indoor/outdoor design of this house, designed to capture a vista from every angle. Needless to say those vistas are what the rain forest promises, breathtaking. Much to the envy of our friends two of the most dramatic trees in Ojochal are on this property. We admired 10 toucans perched high above the day we left. We literally used every space in this house and out.

We started our day downstairs in our outdoor kitchen, perfect spot to lounge over breakfast and admire the spectacular sunrise. Evenings we spent upstairs nurturing the final glow of the sunset. The owners thought of everything, blender, salad spinner, good utensils, beach chairs, phone and of course wifi.

And the location...PERFECT...a good daily walk to the bakery for breakfast insures a daily workout. And a walk around the corner to Diquis is a swell watering hole to meet fellow travelers. (FYI...Diquis will also set up tours for you.)

Like I said...we loved Cielo Grande

Just like home, but with a stunningly beautiful view

Cielo Grande is comfortable and homey, a place in which you can feel truly free. The grounds are just beautiful and overlook a misty valley where you can hear howler monkeys almost every afternoon. Many fabulous birds come by at sun-up and sun-down, including at times half a dozen toucans. Ojochal is a tiny village with a reputation for being a "foodie" destination in Costa Rica, so there are some very good restaurants to enjoy. Don't miss the Tuesday "feria" (farmer's market) at Boca Coronado. It's a small market with only 4-5 vendors, but they are great vendors. The house has no walls (except for the bedrooms) so be prepared that insects, bats, geckos and the odd scorpion will come in. The nature is majestic in this part of Costa Rica.

Great Escape From Reality!

My husband, 9 year old daughter and I spent 5 wonderful nights at Cielo Grande. Barbara, Karen and Sonja were all wonderful in providing information about the house, the area (restaurants, beaches, grocery stores, activities) and directions. Karen met us near the turnoff for Ojochal and led the way to this secluded hideaway - very thoughtful as Costa Rica roads rarely have signs or even names! Despite being in the middle of the Green Season, we had the best of both worlds - we watched a gorgeous lightning show from the top balcony on the 4th of July, and our last 3 days we had no rain at all. The kitchen is well equipped, plenty of towels and linens, guidebooks and information about the area, and the bedrooms are screened in - allowing the windows to be open at night for the breeze and wonderful sounds, but keeping most of the bugs away. We brought our own mosquito nets, and there are already hooks above the bed to attach if desired. But we didn't ever see a sign of mosquitoes or any other biting insects at the night. The pool was wonderful for a morning dip or refresher after the beach. Our daughter was in it pretty much all the time she wasn't eating or sleeping. The grounds are beautiful and well kept, and there is caretaker couple nearby who can answer any questions. As for location, we found Ojochal to be within a 15-45 minute drive to many areas of interest - several beaches, ziplining, the Baruca village, horseback riding, grocery stores, boogie board rental, and some wonderful restaurants - we had great pizza right across from the school, delicious pastries and coffee across from the police station, and a very memorable meal at Exotica. A great holiday home at a great value in a great location. We have already recommended Cielo Grande to several friends.

Wonderful retreat for exploring the region

We spent two weeks at Cielo Grande over the Christmas and New Years holidays. We used the house as a base from which to explore the region, combining time out exploring the beaches and mountains and restaurants with time spent relaxing at the house.

The house was perfect for us - we cooked many meals in the kitchen, dipped in the plunge pool every day, enjoyed the long vistas in every direction (including out to the sea!). We saw toucans in nearby trees and loved waking to the sound of birds and bugs. The landscaping is beautiful, and there are several big patches of grass.

My husband and I stayed in the guest room, with windows on every wall. We felt like we were floating in a tree, with most window views looking out over the jungle. The design of the house is very open - not many exterior walls, so that the lounging areas and kitchen are open-air -- which gives the effect of being outside in nature almost all the time, which we loved.

We were worried at first about not having internet in the house, but that worry dissipated quickly as we relaxed into being unplugged and unconnected. However, just down the street as Diquis del Sur, a hotel, we were able to jump online (usually while sipping pineapple cocktails!).

Cielo Grande was a wonderful retreat for our exploration in Costa Rica.

A Visual Paradise!

My first time in Costa Rica was wonderful! Ojochal is an appealing town with all of the necessities and some: a grocery store with everything, fabulous quiet beaches on warm waters, weekly market with crafts made locally, and several classy restaurants (many nestled in the forest!) that are not only tops in quality of food, but of great value. The fresh fish is especially delicious!

Exploring this community is a lot of fun – there is something for everyone! Snorkelling and scuba diving reveal the diversity of marine life. Cano Island reminded me of the setting for The Castaway movie! The nearby zip line was also thrilling: 14 lines, all in a rainforest with amazing views – harnesses are secure and comfortable. It was a blast!

This property is one of the most picturesque in the area: 360° of beautiful mountains, rainforest, palm trees, flowered shrubs – you name it! The sounds of the rainforest are also fascinating: the early morning distant calls of the howler monkeys, the chatter of parrots in the nearby palm trees, and the variety of other birds flying around the property, including hummingbirds. So much to see and take in - just relaxing in the outdoors of this villa is also a treasure. Read a book; look up…what’s that? A resident morpho butterfly bouncing along, showing off its brilliant shade of blue. Travels so quickly that it is difficult to take a picture!

Strolling along nearby roads leads you to a lovely river laden with trees, vines and shrubs, complete with sounds typical of the rainforest – fun to explore. Hibiscus flowers are all over, plus even more interesting little birds – a fun morning walk.

The house itself has all that is needed to be comfortable, not to mention the plunge pool – a great way to cool off. Bedrooms are spacious with very comfortable beds – something that is important to me. Morning coffee and tropical fruit are to be savoured - because they are grown locally and are all so fresh!

Yes, I can’t wait to go back to Cielo Grande!
