|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
A new vacation-home listing for 2014! The property has direct frontage on the tidal inner harbor at Hodgkins Cove. At high tide, we often swim from the property under the road bridge and out into the harbor with its tiny beach. Bring your kayaks, because this is a great spot for kayak explorations of Cape Ann's rocky north shore!
The bright and sunny home has 4 bedrooms. Three of the bedrooms are on the second floor (two bedrooms with queen beds and one bedroom with two twin beds) and one bedroom is in the finished attic (three twin beds and amazing views). It sleeps 9. The house has just undergone a total renovation from top to bottom, and boasts a brand new kitchen, 3 new bathrooms and a new rear deck for Summer entertaining. The refrigerator and stove are brand new for the 2014 season. All the matrasses and linen are brand new in 2014.
Starting at the walk-out lower level is a family room with rear-facing windows to the yard, two couches and a large flat-screen television. Also at this level is the laundry area (washer and dryer new in 2014) and a full bathroom with shower - perfect for rinsing off after a swim. On the next floor up, which is level with the front entrance, are the large kitchen/dining area with access to the elevated rear deck, the paneled front foyer, the comfortable living room with sectional couch and large flat-screen television, and an additional bathroom with glass-paneled shower. On the next floor up are three bedrooms, with ceiling fans, and a shared bathroom with tub/shower combination. Finally the attic contains a cute additional bedroom with 3 single beds and sloped ceilings.
From the deck, or from the rear yard with its granite seawall, the endless play of the tide in the inlet can provide a fascinating backdrop for your vacation, with plenty of wildlife-watching opportunities. We have watched beaver, otter, heron, kingfishers and endless species of ducks in the inlet, along with the expected shoals of small fish.
The house is positioned for great views out into the harbor, Ipswich Bay and the ocean beyond. At night, watch the twinkling lights on the distant coast extend right up to New Hampshire and Maine. The sunsets from this location are quite spectacular.
The property fronts onto Washington Street, which is a well-traveled way situated between the house and the main part of the harbor. Washington Street is part of the route that leads one completely around Cape Ann. The location is is very convenient for exploring the harbor, which is accessible directly across the street, beautiful Plum Cove beach and Lane's Cove (a 10 and 20 minutes walk, respectively, in one direction), and the quaint and picturesque village of Annisquam (a 10 minute walk in the other direction). In addition, hiking inland will bring you to some of the many abandoned quarries that dot the center of Cape Ann.
The house is well equipped, including two large flat-screen televisions with DVD players, wifi, washer and dryer, Kurig coffee maker, a well equipped kitchen and plenty of bed linen. The refrigerator has a door-mounted ice dispenser. The gas stove runs on propane, which is included in the rental fee. The sink has a disposal. There is plenty of parking.
Pat and John Austin, the Owners, fell in love with Cape Ann immediately after arriving in the US from England thirty years ago. Now Cape Ann residents, they hope to share their enthusiasm for the area with their guests.
Cape Ann has a charm that is all its own: the beaches, the rocky coastal paths, the beautiful vistas, the charming and characterful villages and towns and the wonderful people who live in them. The whole area is steeped in the history of America's earliest days. Even Boston is easily accessible, being just 50 minutes by car or train from Gloucester or Rockport. There is much to explore. The property provides a spacious and comfortable base for your stay on Cape Ann, with the added benefit of stunning ocean views, direct water access for aquatic activities ,and local points of interest within walking distance.
We love this property and think that it has much to offer to make your vacation special: comfort and convenient, water access, ocean views, character, history and stunning sunsets over the water.
Gloucester prides itself as being 'America's Oldest Seaport' and evidence of its sea-faring traditions abound. Fishing, whale-watching and sailing trips are available from the main harbor, which still serves as an active fishing port. Scenic Cape Ann has much to offer as a vacation destination, from gorgeous sandy beaches to rocky coastal paths; from quaint old harbors to enchanting colonial buildings; from outstanding art galleries to excellent restaurants. A drive around Rte 127, which encircles the island, leads from one scenic vista to another. Be sure to check out the quaint and beautiful old fishing village of Annisquam (a walk from the property) and the artist's colony at Rocky Neck at Gloucester harbor. Also, be sure not to miss the scenic and characterful Town of Rockport, with its quaint harbor and Bear Skin Neck, complete with shops, restaurants and Motif #1, one of the most painted structures around! A short drive from the property is the Halibut Point State Park, with its abandoned quarry leading down to the sea, and its outstanding views all the way up the coast to Maine. Inland on Cape Ann, for those who enjoy hiking, are fascinating walks to other quarries and remains of the once-thriving granite industry. The property faces Hodgkins Cove harbor which was once used to load granite from The Cape Ann Granite Company onto square rigged sailing ships for transportation to destinations such as Boston, New York City other major East Coast cities. Indeed, the property itself is steeped in the history of the area, having been the Bayview general store and Post Office in an earlier time. A photograph, framed at the property, shows the house at the head of the harbor in the 1890's.
Many other delightful and historic New England coastal towns, are only a short drive away, including Salem, with its history of witch trials, Essex with its antique shops and pristine bay/estuary, Ipswich, Newburyport and many more.
