Sleeps 8 -10

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Please read this before you visit our web site for complete details about our unique Rental property and Landmark Lighthouse.

We are fully booked for our peak season; the entire months of July and August with returning guests from 2013 and previous years. We are again accepting bookings for September 2014 and the three remaining weeks in October, 2014.

As we anticipated we have had another very successful season. The Fall months are wonderful in Maine with gorgeous foliage colors, usually quiet traffic and delightful weather. Also, our post-season rates are lower to accommodate less expensive vacationing. We do urge you to book early for the week (s) of your choice and we are also offering a 5% discount for two week bookings and a 10% discount for a monthly booking if available. Right now the entire month of September is still available.

Our Lighthouse has easy direct access from the street even though it is on the shore of Bass Harbor. It is not for sale and is not open to the public. It is included for your use as part of the rental of our oceanfront home on the Quiet Side of Mt. Desert. Now, enjoy a tour of our Centennial Homestead & Family Lighthouse. We look forward to hearing from you.

PLEASE READ ON FOR AN OVER VIEW OF MY PROPERTY.

You can vacation in Maine's landmark Lighthouse & live in its adjacent charming oceanfront country home on Mt. Desert in the quaint fishing village of Bernard. Available July thru October. This is the location of the Centennial Homestead & Family Lighthouse and is one of the most unique rental properties in Maine, known for its famous lobster buoy wall. Perfect for rest, relaxation and entertaining, just a few steps across the road is the meticulously renovated Homestead which has a maximum capacity of 10. It features four bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths and a host of comfort and convenient amenities, including three living rooms, exquisitely furnished with crafts and antiques It's actually two houses in one providing ultimate privacy for shared rentals. A professionally maintained cutting flower garden and Zen garden complement the exterior furnished porches.

The Lighthouse: The Lighthouse is the only private Lighthouse in Maine, has achieved national attention for its famous lobster buoy wall, inclusion in the film, Cider House Rules and known as the Lighthouse Wedding Chapel. The view is utterly fantastic as you can almost touch the 65 lobster boats in your sight in Bass Harbor, one of nine major working harbors in Maine. It's a perfect place for rest, relaxation and entertaining family and friends. Enjoy a cocktail or a glass of wine and you are literally in the lap of luxury. The view from the top of the Lighthouse is breathtaking and a perfect place to take photographs of the harbor. You can watch a variety of sea ducks as well as seals, eagles, osprey, cormorants and a variety of sea gulls. Kingfishers fish from the lighthouse dock in August and September.

Local History: Sea Memorial & Bass Harbor Light: In Bernard village and across the harbor in village of Bass Harbor, you can bike or drive to the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. And you can walk or bike to visit the Sea Memorial located at the Town Dock just a short 5 minute walk away. Bring your own or rent kayaks & bicycles and explore the harbor and nearby Bass Harbor Marsh. Acadia National Park has many miles of carriage trails that are well kept and groomed for safe and comfortable walking and bicycling for your entire family. Thurston's Wharf: Just a short walk from The Centennial House and Lighthouse is a working fishing dock and lobster pound with a restaurant above for the best lobster dinner on Mt. Desert Island!

Guestbook comments from the manager
"The Centennial Homestead and Family Lighthouse was truly an excellent rental. The family house is beautiful, modern, clean, and well supplied to meet a family's needs including WiFi. Everything as promised. On the front porch a glider swing gives a clear view of the garden and lobster boats coming and going in the harbor. The lighthouse across the street is another unusual and special place to watch the boats, tides, birds or just relax with quiet music. The kids liked to escape there, too. One quarter block up the street is a popular restaurant with fresh lobster noon and evening. Also a free bus runs hourly to several towns including Bar Harbor and makes many stops at Acadia National Park. I give this unique rental a top rating."

My name is Irving Silverman, and I am the owner of the Centennial Homestead & Family Lighthouse. I would like to introduce myself & my residential property. I am a 93 year old young philanthropist who has lived an active, purposeful life in five geographical areas (New York City, Long Island, NY, Tucson, AZ, Bernard ME. and now in a retirement community in Dedham Mass. Although I am a native New Yorker, I am really an emotional Mainer because I have happily lived with my family in Maine for over 50 years. I am a writer, entrepreneur and philanthropist, and am most proud of my last and current career, which brings me to my reason for writing this introduction to my property.

I was widowed at the age of 35 with two young children. Three years later, I met and married my second wife, Nancy and together we founded the organization, 'Parents Without Partners. It was Nancy who introduced me to Maine and the start of a half century love affair with lighthouses.

Irving Silverman, Owner purchased this house in 1980

It was in 1973 that we first rented our century old Bernard home. We bought in 1980 and lovingly renovated it as our cherished Homestead. We have lived in it for over 45 summers, becoming legal Maine residents because we were charmed by the landscape and the friendliness of the community residents. Although my wife and I loved our intimacy with the water and the beauty of the working harbor, I could not have a boat because of my legal blindness. Nevertheless, we became integrated into the community and were acknowledged as respected citizens. When we learned that there were over a hundred homes in our town that were over 100 years old, including the homes on our street and our home, we organized the Centennial Club which celebrated our town's heritage. We also sponsored the creation of the Tremont Sea Memorial, which honored the memory of the 140 town residents who died at sea. It is located at the Town dock, down the street. (worth a visit).

In 1990, Nancy honored me by designing and building the Family Lighthouse, to be my 'vertical' boat. It is now a Town landmark and its historic lobster buoy wall has been photographed thousands of times. It also was seen in the movie, 'Cider House Rules'. I wrote my first book 'A Trilogy...Three Hearts...One Soul' in the Lighthouse. The Lighthouse has been a source of joy for me and my family and we are pleased to make it available to any renters of our Homestead. Upon Nancy's death in 2002, I dedicated the Lighthouse as a Wedding Chapel and I have officiated at 34 weddings in the Chapel. Most couples refer to it as the most romantic and spiritual wedding site in Maine. All fees have been donated to Hospice and other charities.

Our Homestead & Family Lighthouse is not operated as a business. All rental income is donated to charities.

WONDERFUL VACATION ON MOUNT DESERT ISLAND

  • 5 of 5
My family and I stayed here at the end of August. We'd initially planned to have a larger group but ended up having the whole house to our family of four. This is a wonderful house in a secluded but convenient location. The house is comfortable, well maintained, and feels very "homey". The property manager is very helpful and professional. It's a two minute walk up the street from Thurston's Lobster Pound and a quick 10 minute drive to Southwest Harbor. We enjoyed being away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the island and waking up to views of Bass Harbor. The lighthouse is a fun feature which I'm sure we would have used more if our daughter wasn't a toddler. We would absolutely stay here again with a hopefully bigger group of people. Thanks for a wonderful vacation!!

CENTENNIAL HOMESTEAD AND LIGHTHOUSE

  • 5 of 5
Lovely spacious home complete with well equipped kitchen, multi living spaces and charming lighthouse. Quiet dead-end road with water views on all sides and within walking distance to a lobster restaurant. Perfect home for a multi-generational family as ours with a bedroom and full bath in its own wing on the main floor. What a sensational vacation at the Centennial Homestead which generally started with coffee on the back deck to watch the lobster boats pull out of the harbor, catching a late morning shuttle up the road to Acadia for a morning hike and swim at Echo Lake and finally, capped off by a glass of wine in the lighthouse (often a sleepover for those who chose). The kids couldn't wait for low tide to scramble around on the rocks collecting crabs and other ocean creatures. Caretaker Lynne was warm, attentive to our needs and easily accessible as we planned our daily activities. The property was clean and well cared for and amenities were above our expectations at this highly recommended rental. Thanks for the breathtaking views and fabulous "real taste of Maine" vacation!

AN IDYLLIC SPOT BY THE HARBOR

  • 5 of 5
The house was comfortable, historic and roomy. The new wing contained a
master bedroom perfect for older parents. It was on the ground floor and had a
handicapped shower. The third floor had a sleeping loft perfect for children. The
second floor had two bedrooms and a bath. The kitchen had a table which we
used for most meals. There were modern, high quality appliances and plenty
of pots, pans and dishes. The house was clean and well kept by the manager.
The modern lighthouse was a lovely place to observe the pretty harbor. There
were several rooms in the house and lighthouse where one could read or study.
There was wifi which made computer use very convenient.
Location was good, as we could go down to the shore at low tide and visit
the lobster pound down the road. There was also a beach within walking distance.
The town itself was lovely with shops, farmer's market, library and restaurants.
For people who love nature, Acadia National Park was nearby.
We definitely recommend the property and hope to return next year!

Owner's Response: Rosalyn and family
We are so pleased that your family enjoyed your vacation in the Centennial Homestead & Family Lighthouse. We are especially happy that your family included a newborn child. This will add to the legacy of our unique property. Perhaps when she grows up, her family will take her back to the site to show her where she spent her first vacation. We look forward to your family's return as many of our previous renters continue to be our Honored Guests.

Car: recommended

The Bass Harbor Light Head only a 10min drive from home.

Rent bicycles at the bicycle shop in S.W. Harbor and explore carriage trails and villages. Kayak and canoe rentals are also available as rentals close by in Southwest Harbor. The company will deliver them and provide you with life jackets, and instructions about the area. Most also have tours as well.

Not up for biking? The well groomed and maintained Carriage trails are also a very popular spot for hiking or jogging. You can enjoy Eagle Lake and places like Which Hole Pond. These Park trails are well marked, well groomed, and maps are available in many of the stores.

And if you are a Birder, you can take the family for a walk on the trails at Acadia's Sieur-de-Monts Springs. Pileated Woodpeckers and Warblers are just two of the many species of birds you can see and photograph here.

And, if you have been here before, you no doubt remember the Jordon's Pond House and 'Pop-Overs and Tea'.

Other Activities: Another popular and well known destination is Bar Harbor. And the cruise ship industry has Bar Harbor Maine as one of the most popular ports of call. There is a schedule of ships arriving, so you don't have to guess when one will be in the outer harbor.

There are museums and guided tours. Take a boat tour to the outer island to see Seals, Sea Ducks and Puffins and see the workings of a Lobster Trap. Learn about the biology and marine life of Acadia and its waters. Ocean fishing for Mackerel and Sea Bass from the docks is another popular pass time among the locals and visitors alike.

There are so many interesting activities that are just too numerous to put into a paragraph. But I have never heard anyone every say they wish they had never come here.

Once you are here, you won't want to leave! But if you do have to leave, I can guarantee you will want to come back!

Again and again.

We hope you and your family will come and stay with us and be one of our Honored Guests! This 2013 season brings two of our families back for a second time, one family is again staying for two weeks and the other family is returning for another week!

Activities close by;

Golf: The Causeway Club

Causeway Club located at 10 Fernald Point Road Southwest Harbor. A well maintained golf course and just 5.3 miles off of Maine 102 North, partially surrounded by the waters of Norwood Cove in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Open to the public. Relax and enjoy a round or two at this public, friendly nine hole course. Mt.Kebo Golf Course is located in Bar Harbor.
