There are trails meandering off the local roads, soaring and hot air ballooning in nearby Post Mills. Balloons can sometimes be seen catching a downdraft over the lake in early morning or in the evening.
Winter is quieter with less than a dozen winter residents. However, snow mobiling, cross country skiing, ice fishing and skating on a plowed 5 mile speed skating course provide plendy of options for winter vacationers. Winter carnival and snow mobil rallies provide plenty action.
There are major downhill ski areas within 1.5 hour in several directions.
Twin Gables is at 1318 Lake Morey Road. Owner- Beth Barrett, PO Box 306, Fairlee, VT 05045
My property has been in the Barrett family since 1950 something. I rebuilt in 2007 as a year round home. I am happy to share this special place on Lake Morey with others. I will try to sum up some facts about this area for you.
My landscaping is informal but does require a lot of care; I expect respect for the plants. T
Restaurants- There are many within 20 miles and if you count Hanover Area and want to travel there are many more. I am putting a scrapbook together with some of the local menus.
• Fairlee has the Whippi Dip- Ice Cream
• Whistlestop- Breakfast and lunch
• Holy Mackerel-Seafood brought in from Boston docks twice a week
• Baileys Tavern- Full menu, Karioka, band and open mike
• Lake Morey Inn has great food; reservations are required.
Chapman’s Store is a must stop, fishing gear, gifts, best wine around, used books and souvenirs. Fishing licenses can be obtained at Chapman’s and are required even off the dock and the lake is patrolled.
Our Marina on Route 5 has rental canoes and power boats: I do not have a powerboat. Swimming from my dock is fine. The water is thigh deep at shore and over your head at the end of the dock.
There is a grass air strip in Post Mills about 10 miles away; Hot Air Balloon can often be seen over Lake Morey
Twin Gables has a single person kayak and a Force 5 sail boat; I have all the gear but don’t sail alone much. If you can rig it you can sail it “at your own risk”.
I have several life jackets; Vermont law requires life jacket be worn in all boats, canoes and kayaks.
My studio is on the first level; I stay there when there are guests if I am here. I like to meet my guest when they arrive.
My property is a very steep lot; comfortable parking for four cars. Campers would park at the boat launch area about 5 cottages up the lake. The house opens at the road side with a stairway to the entry; then there are 3 flights of stairs to ground level and another stone stairway to the lake. I do not have a handicap entrance yet? One must be able to navigate stairs.
The only level is at the end of the driveway and that is a leech field which cannot be driven on.
The morning sun comes in about 6:30 and a restful moon rises in the night sky providing for a beautiful evening.
As always, water sports including swimming are prone to hazards which are undertaken at your own risk. There is an outdoor shower if you wish to use it.
I prefer shoes be left outdoors; that request, of course, is not entirely in my control.
Bedding and towels are provided and you are welcome to use the washer and dryer. The dishwasher is available; I will have to show you how it works. There is a small refrigerator in the kitchen and a larger one in the studio for beverages. There is, also, a small freezer in the kitchen with a larger one in the studio.
There is a gas grill on the deck for your use, please replace the gas if you empty the container. The fire pit is available below the deck which you may use again at your own risk. The same is true of the indoor fireplace. Wood is provided.
Trail maps are available all around the lake by the boat accesses. We monitor boats going into the lake for invasive species. The lake has a public beach with life guards; you will need my pass if you wish to use it. I have placed maps, history of the Lake and other information of interest on the coffee table in the loft.
911 will bring the rescue squad that is located on the east side of the lake.
I have a studio on the first floor with an unfinished lavatory and a full bath on the main floor.
There are 2 lofts, one on the street level with a pull out sofa bed, and one small loft with a twin bed in the “red” bedroom, On the main floor the master bedroom has a double bed, the gold bedroom has a twin bed and the “red” room has a twin bed on the main level with the small loft.
You are welcome to read any of my books respectfully.
Internet connection is DSL with a somewhat weak signal.
No TV- No smoking and no pets without permission. We recycle everything. If you simply put all clean paper, plastic, glass and cans in a bag I will take them to the dump- Dump is only open for 2 hours on Saturday morning.
When staying on the lake people often encourage family and friends to visit; I have no problem with that to the extent that furniture is not disturbed or mistreated. I would ask that guests disclose the number of visitors they might expect.
Keywords: Lakefront home with deck off main level, patio of lower level, 2 lofts one with twin and one with queen hide-a-bed, 3 bedrooms on main level and large lower level for cots and twin featherbed.
