Photos and Description of the Kealakekua vacation house rental
House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Hale Hula is nestled in the heart of Kona coffee country on the upcountry slopes of Kealakekua. Located on a 10 acre macademia nut farm orchard, privacy and serenity is the key feature of this wonderful Hawaiian getaway. Enjoy a cup of 100% Kona coffee while relaxing on your private lanai overlooking pasture and orchard. Our newly installed fireplace makes any cool evening a cozy and romantic environment.

The private, fenced and gated house is eco-friendly and is perfect for any environmentally conscious individuals. We are completely off-grid, yet offer all the modern luxury and conveniences while experiencing Hawaii at its' best. We have a water filtration system that makes drinking and bathing an experience to appreciate.

The Hale Hula kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need and has a lovely dining area that overlooks the pastures. The spacious bedroom offers a comfortable queen sized bed. Sliding glass doors will take you from your bedroom onto the lanai where you can relax after a long day of snorkeling.

With Kahaluu Beach only a short 20 minutes away, you will enjoy some of the best snorkeling that the Big Island offers. Sea turtles are often spotted there, and we will supply you with your snorkeling gear, beach towels/mats, and beach chairs.

Take a stroll to the top of the 10 acres where your hosts will give you a complimentary tour of the over 70 parrots who call Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary their home. This non-profit parrot sanctuary was founded by the owners to provide refuge for the numerous displaced parrots throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Truly an incredible experience that many visitors to Hawaii miss.

Hale Hula was built in 2011, reminiscent of the plantation homes of days long gone. The house is completely furnished with authentic vintage Hawaiiana. Many of the furnishings are rare pieces from the owners' personal collection.

Because we are animal lovers, our two friendly dogs have the roam of the entire ten acres. They mind their own business which usually involves keeping track of the horses and cattle on neighboring properties.

Because we are off-grid, we do not have cable access. We do have Wireless Internet, a television with DVD player, and plenty of DVD's that you can borrow. With great cell phone reception, you still will be able to access your calls and have communication.

We know that you will enjoy your stay at Hale Hula. It is truly a wonderful experience that will give you the ultimate Hawaii experience. We look forward to meeting you, and being your hosts here on the Big Island. Please feel free to contact us via email or telephone with any questions or concerns that you may have.

Parrots And Paradise, what more to add!

This beautiful and thoughtfully built cottage is perfectly located away from the hustle of Kailua-Kona. At 2'000 feet elevation the evenings are cool but the cottage is very warm and cozy, coupled with the warm welcome from Dorothy and Jerry.
Getting there was easy thanks to Dorothy's explanations and our trusty GPS (we arrived at night under torential rain and couldn't see anything), it is out of the way and off the grid, no doubt :-)
The photos and descriptions were very accurate and the cottage is very clean and extremely well maintained as is the rest of the property, it is clear that our hosts take pride in their poperty.
We have been recommending this property to our friends.
While staying at this end of the island we visited daily the "Up country bakery and café", we also liked the pizzeria next door. Sewing as a hobby I was very happy to find one of the best fabric stores with a wide variety of choice at the right price in Kealakekua "H Kimura Store Inc". It was a great base to explore the south end beaches (black sand and rocks, as well as Puuhonua O Honaunau historical village).
Overall our experience at the cottage was very positive and we would come back in heartbeat.
Thanks for your hospitality and generosity!

Exceptional vacation rental at a great location

We stayed for 2 weeks at the Hawaiian Islands and the one week in this cottage was by far the best location we stayed at. The cottage is located on a 10 acres Macadamia nut plantation in a well maintained garden. The house is completely renovated with new, elegant and tasteful furniture. Everything was exceptional clean. The kitchen was well equipped and we got as much as we wanted of Kona coffee beans, fresh eggs, macadamia nuts, fruits and avocados from the owners. Snorkeling and beach equipment was available. In reality, it looks much better than the photos on the internet. Even though it had a very nice bathroom, we enjoyed using the outdoor shower in the garden, which was protected from views, as plants were around it and the next neighbors were out of sight.
The owners were very kind and helpful and answered questions immediately, either by phone, e-mail or personally.
As nearby activities we did snorkeling at the Captain Cooks monument (Kealakekua Bay, the best snorkeling place in whole Hawaii with coral reefs and calm waters and easy ways of access to the water). A 45-60 min. very nice hike leads down to the place - it can also be reached by canoe or organized boat-trip. We also visited the impressive and close by Natural Historic Park of "Puuhonua O Honaunau" with its old wooden statues of the native Hawaiian people.
We definitely would recommend this place to friends and family.

Awesome!

Hale Hula is truly a hidden gem. For visitors from the frozen north one highlight for us was being up the mountain with cooler temperatures. It was lovely to sleep between flannel sheets under a duvet at night.

Everything said in the other reviews is true. Dorothy and Jerry are interesting, remarkable and genuine hosts. The cottage is immaculately equipped and furnished. Produce fresh from the land (avocados, macadamia nuts, papaya, mandarins); peace and quiet with total privacy; a delightful outdoor shower after a day in the ocean and sun; and close proximity to cafes, restaurants, history, beaches, snorkelling.

We would highly recommend this property, especially if you enjoy something unique.

Nearby attractions that we enjoyed: snorkelling at Kahalu'u Beach and Honaunau Bay, visiting Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park and a twilight tub at Mamalahoa Hot Tubs. Further afield we'd recommend the Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area, which has lovely community gardens and a walking loop along side a long beach with lovely tidal pools, and a visit to Kamuela for a more western feel. A four-WD drive on the Mana Rd is a great way to spend the day circling the east side of Mauna Kea. And we thoroughly enjoyed eating Hawaiian Poke at the open air Harbor House restaurant north of Kailua-Kona.

Dorothy and Jerry ... much mahalo. Lon & Wendy

We loved Hale Hula and plan to return as often as possible. One of the most relaxing vacations I've ever had. So great to be away from the noise and hustle of the tourist areas. Our hosts were exceptionally warm and friendly. We would come home to find beautiful papaya and avocados on the porch railing to enjoy. We hated to leave.

Just what we needed....

Hale Hula is a quiet retreat from the busy world and such a well-appointed and peaceful garden of eden that I hesitate to give the review it deserves in case it becomes too popular for us to book the next time! This is the first time I have awarded five stars to a VRBO property.

We arrived to find a gift of coffee, fresh fruit from the garden. and beautiful fresh flowers for us.

The cottage was super clean and complete with good quality pots, pans, implements and dishes and all the kitchen basics (no cheap low quality goods either) so that we were able to do most of our own cooking during our stay without finding that we didn't have a pot for this or a knife for that.

The bed was super comfy and dressed with crisp, clean linens. The bathroom was supplied with lots of good quality towels as well as soap, shampoo, and things you may not have thought to bring but find yourself in need of.

The setting was idyllic and the cottage decor complements it with some really interesting Hawaiian antique furniture and art work. Quality and workmanship are apparent throughout.

If you are someone who leaves a big energy footprint this may not be the place for you as you will not find air conditioning (we certainly didn't need it as the temperature was moderated at that elevation) or other big energy consuming equipment. The power is provided by solar panels which we found entirely adequate for our needs and didn't run out at any point during our stay. We aren't fans of bottled water so were happy that the water supply from their rainwater system was safe and good to drink right out of the tap.

The owners are great -- super friendly and helpful while at the same time respectful of our privacy. They gave us a tour of the parrot sanctuary (which is located out of sight up the hill near their house) and introduced us to the residents which was a real thrill! They gave us leave to pick some fruit out of their orchard, all the macadamia nuts we wanted to harvest and eat (lots!) and pointed us to interesting places to see in the area during our stay. They made themselves available if we had any questions for them. Thanks Dorothy and Jerry!

We will definitely book here again the next time we visit the area and recommend it heartily.
