Hale Hula is nestled in the heart of Kona coffee country on the upcountry slopes of Kealakekua. Located on a 10 acre macadamia nut farm orchard, privacy and serenity is the key feature of this wonderful Hawaiian getaway. Enjoy a cup of 100% Kona coffee while relaxing on your private lanai overlooking pasture and orchard. Our fireplace makes any cool evening a cozy and romantic environment.
The private, fenced and gated house is eco-friendly and is perfect for any environmentally conscious individuals. We are completely off-grid, yet offer all the modern luxury and conveniences while experiencing Hawaii at its' best. We have a water filtration system that makes drinking and bathing an experience to appreciate.
The Hale Hula kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need and has a lovely dining area that overlooks the pastures. The spacious bedroom offers a comfortable queen sized bed. Sliding glass doors will take you from your bedroom onto the lanai where you can relax after a long day of snorkeling.
With Kahaluu Beach only a short 20 minutes away, you will enjoy some of the best snorkeling that the Big Island offers. Sea turtles are often spotted there, and we will supply you with your snorkeling gear, beach towels/mats, and beach chairs.
Take a stroll to the top of the 10 acres where your hosts will give you a complimentary tour of the over 70 parrots who call Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary their home. This non-profit parrot sanctuary was founded by the owners to provide refuge for the numerous displaced parrots throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Truly an incredible experience that many visitors to Hawaii miss.
Hale Hula was built in 2011, reminiscent of the plantation homes of days long gone. The house is completely furnished with authentic vintage Hawaiiana. Many of the furnishings are rare pieces from the owners' personal collection.
Because we are animal lovers, our two friendly dogs have the roam of the entire ten acres. They mind their own business which usually involves keeping track of the horses and cattle on neighboring properties.
Because we are off-grid, we do not have cable access. We do have Wireless Internet, a television with DVD player, and plenty of DVD's that you can borrow. With great cell phone reception, you still will be able to access your calls and have communication.
We know that you will enjoy your stay at Hale Hula. It is truly a wonderful experience that will give you the ultimate Hawaii experience. We look forward to meeting you, and being your hosts here on the Big Island. Please feel free to contact us via email or telephone with any questions or concerns that you may have.

We are your hosts, Jerry and Dorothy Walsh. We moved from Southern California in 1988, and have been here ever since. Jerry is a 'retired' nurseryman, a lover of plants and tropical fruit trees. Dorothy is a retired nurse practitioner, who spends her time with Jerry, caring for the sanctuary parrots and orchards.....and Hale Hula.
We have two children who graduated from the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Our daughter is a hospice nurse, and our son is an art teacher/farmer.
We feel blessed to live in Hawaii all these years and love the simple lifestyle that has surrounded us.
Dorothy Walsh purchased this house in 2011
We love living here and want to share this amazing place with others. Hale Hula is the ultimate in privacy and the perfect get-away from what most people think of 'typical Hawaii'. Experience what and why 'local' residents love the Big Island so much.
While staying at Hale Hula, you get to experience a unique part of Hawaii that most visitors really miss out on. You get to experience all the beauty that Hawaii offers while having the privacy and serenity that makes your visit a true vacation.
Jerry and Dorothy are the most amazing hosts. The house is beautifully appointed and we could NOT have been happier with our decision to stay with them. They thought of every detail to make our stay terrific. We definitely recommend the hosts and the property - getting off the grid was great! You just have to experience the outdoor shower; the fresh fruits and avocados; the true peace and quiet of the lanai; the coolness of the elevation and the heater to take the chill off of the night. Don't miss the Sunday morning Farmer's Market! Their knowledge (and willingness to share) of the surrounding area was especially welcome as we determine if retirement on the Big Island is 'for us'.
We had a wonderful time with Dorothy and Jerry on the big island. The rental was spotless and we were not in need of anything as it is well stocked for kitchen and bath needs. The property is tucked up the mountain away from crowds and we loved being on our own and having a place truly "away" to unwind. There are plenty of good places to eat and shop in the area. Really enjoyed walking around the new orchard by the rental and checking out all the different fruit tree varieties. Dorothy and Jerry took time out of their days to welcome us and make us feel at home on their property. They offered to show us their parrot sanctuary, which was an amazing experience and I hope anyone who is staying here has the time to arrange with them. When we arrived there was fresh fruit and avocados left in the kitchen and we also picked quite a few macadamia nuts and cracked them on the porch while watching the birds. We loved the outdoor shower too! A 5 star experience!
A First class accommodation in a beautiful slightly remote location. Loved the fruit trees, all the macadamia nuts you could eat, and a very interesting parrot sanctuary. The owners are on-sight and very pleasant. The cottage has everything you will need, very comfortable with a lovely porch and outside shower to get the sand off when you get doused! The Big Island is so interesting. Lots of geology and beautiful scenery, but not much in the way of beaches.
The cottage and our hosts were nicer than we could have imagined. We will be returning in the future! This was a great location to get away and relax. We took advantage of the beach chairs/towels/snorkel/boogie boards for a great day at the beach. After staying here I'm not sure we could stay any place else when we visit Hawaii.
We just returned from a wonderful week at Hale Hula and can't wait to go back! Everything said in the other glowing reviews of this property is true -- the owners Dorothy and Jerry are gracious, warm hosts, the property is spotless, well-appointed and comfortable, the location is sunny and warm during the day and refreshingly cool in the evenings, and sitting on the lanai cracking and eating macadamia nuts is a great way to gear up for a day exploring the beautiful island. This was without a doubt the most restful vacation we have ever had. One week was not long enough for us to see everything we wanted to see, so I guess that means we have to go back next year!
Fabulous! Lovely location. Very friendly hosts. Would return in a heart beat. A great Christmas 2013
