Perfect Retreat Near Homer

5 of 5
Submitted: September 12, 2012 Stayed: August 2012
We will remember our time at Walkabout Cottage - overlooking Kachemak Bay, the mountains and glaciers beyond as the most peaceful, enchanting time in our three weeks in Alaska. Thirteen scenic miles east of Homer and only a few miles short of the end of the road (literally), this immaculate, nicely decorated home provided the secluded retreat from which to enjoy our time in the Kenai Peninsula.

We appreciated the large and well-stocked kitchen, bath and laundry, our host having provided the newer appliances and extra amenities to make hers a five star home rental. The open concept master bedroom led onto a second story deck from which we gazed at the mountains and glaciers and I spent early mornings reading from the eclectic library Nancy provided. This after a night under the quilts in the inviting and very comfortable bed.

The owner provided spot-on directions and helpful area information. The rental pricing was very attractive and we certainly paid more for much less elsewhere in Alaska. We would return in a heartbeat.

A Special Place Near Homer

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Walkabout cottage. It is a lovely, tastefully & simply decorated cottage that is furnished with everything you might need & or want. The views from both decks were stunning. Luckily, we had a day of sunshine when we could see all the mountains & glaciers. We love music and were able to play music to our hearts content thanks to the iPod player. We found it to be a well maintained, beautiful rental and was the best place we stayed in while in Alaska. Though we were 13 miles from Homer, it was not a problem. If you want peace & quiet in a beautiful location that is inspirational, stay here.

Wonderful Home

5 of 5
Submitted: July 25, 2012 Stayed: July 2012
We live in Alaska and wanted to spend some time in Homer, especially at the beach. It was me and my children ages 16, 13 and 7. The house was perfect for us. It was perfectly clean and had absolutely everything we could need. It was so comfortable and homey. My 16 year old daughter even said how some places you never feel relaxed or completely comfortable in but she did here. Unfortunately, we had terrible summer weather (46, raining, blowing!!). We were prepared. We bundled up with hats, gloves and rain gear and went to Bishop's Beach anyway. We loved it. What was wonderful about our trip was because of the weather we spent more time inside at the house and ended up having fun just hanging out together. We made dinners together (wonderful fully stocked kitchen) played hide and seek, played board games and cards. We had a movie night, too. (Safeway rental) My 16 year old even had fun. They had a few games & we brought our own. I really appreciated having the washer & dryer to use. When we went to pack lunches and I had forgotten containers & baggies, I found everything I needed.

Like the description says, it's 13 miles from Homer, but we didn't mind. Talking about our day and looking around made it a very short drive. We stopped twice to visit some horses and also stopped at the Calvin and Coyle trail. (An easy one mile walk through spruce and alder forest and wetlands. Leads to a viewing platform overlooking Beluga Lake. The trailhead is located at the end of Mariner Drive out East End Road. Very limited parking and no vehicle turnaround. Watch for the sign a couple miles out of town) We didn't end up walking the whole trail as there was a sign saying not to go near a fallen tree that was down across the trail. But it was a nice walk anyway.

One day we had lunch at Maura's Cafe which was amazing (located in Old Town Homer, blocks away from Bishops Beach in the historic Old Inlet Trading Post). It might not be completely kid friendly if you have a picky eater. I had to pack a separate lunch for my 7 yr old picky eater. But take a look at their website. I recommend the tomato basil soup and the Green Submarine sandwich. The side of pasta salad was really good, too.

Overall, I highly recommend this house. Liked the drive to it, the setting, the view, the yard, the house and just loved our time there. And the price, compared to a hotel without a kitchen, etc, etc, was fantastic!

Awesome Place

This is an awesome vacation house! The view of Kachemak Bay from the deck was incredible. I really enjoyed the large decks and the privacy from other homes in the area. The house itself is very nice; kitchen, washer & dryer, large book library, board games, HD TV for movies - all were great. I would have liked to stay all summer! It is 12 miles out of Homer, so you need to leave extra time to get to your excursions. I would definately recommend this house!

This was the most perfect place to stay! The house was immaculate and stocked with everything we needed. What a peaceful, restful place to come "home" to after a day of sightseeing, hiking and kayaking. The views were amazing! I love the opportunity to sit on the deck each morning having my devotions and reading time with a view of glaciers and the bay. Thanks Nancy for such an amazing place.
