About Susan Welton

Hi, We’re Walter and Susan , and we welcome you to our island (Well, it’s not our island. We don’t own it; it’s far too large.)

Having been residents of Big Island before Kona had a single stoplight and nothing stayed open past 5pm, we’ve watched our town grow and change. Thankfully it remains as charming and full of the Aloha Spirit as it did when we moved here in 1979 (with a few extra amenities).

Walter spent his career as a contractor building high-end custom homes for happy clients and Susan spent her career flying high in the friendly skies as a flight attendant for United Airlines.

Over the past 30 years we have built countless of our own homes together, and we wanted to combine that building expertise and our love for travel and adventure to create the ideal vacation home in paradise.

Walter has a great talent for creating beautiful, well-crafted spaces and Susan is a master at making a house a home. Together we know staying at Kona Sunset Hale will be the experience of your lifetime.

It is our aim to make you feel as though you’ve come to stay with friends. There is nothing quite like the Land of Aloha, and we are so excited to welcome you to it.

Aloha,

Walt & Sue

Why Susan Welton chose Kailua Kona

Its a funny story - We tried to sell it twice, it kept coming back.

So, we got the message and decided to build on it instead. But since we already had a home we like, we chose to build one for you. It has just been completed, with NEW almost everything.

This property is magical, come see for yourselves.

5 Stars Is Not Enough

  • 5 of 5

This is going to be a rave review, just want to warn you right from the start! If you are looking for hospitality, comfort, luxury, affordability and accessibility than look no further. Our family of 6 enjoyed such a fantastic week staying here toward the end of March 2015. Susan and Walt have a beautiful vacation home and we are so grateful that they decided to share it and not move in permanently themselves, (which is what we would have done.) From the stunning ocean views, to the wonderful decorating lines, the most comfortable beds and best walk-in showers ever, we just were blown away every day. The Big Island is the most visually stunning and our favorite place that we have traveled to, thus far. If you are trying to decide between islands, this is a winner. We highly recommend taking a day to visit the green and black sand beaches. They are amazing to see. Have you ever been off-roading with your parents? You should try it for a hilariously bone jostling, but extremely enjoyable time! It's an experience not to be missed! We also enjoyed fabulous dining from the Lava Java Cafe in town, to the exquisite Four Seasons dinner at sunset. The little beaches along the roadside are not always marked well but are such a treat. Susan was so kind with her availability and gave us directions on how to find these little gems. Every beach is unique and quite possibly, more amazing than the last one you visit. Our family believes in and is privileged to have personal relationships with The Great Creator, the Lord Jesus. The Gospels state, "What manner of Man is this, that the winds and waves obey Him? God created everything through Him, all things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made." We certainly experienced that and were awed by His presence and beauty on this island and look forward to returning in the near future! Mahalo Susan and Walt!

Kona Sunset Hale

  • 5 of 5

This is a fantastic property in Kona, Hawaii. The location is great, just 7 minutes from Yoga Hale, Bike Works and the grocery store on Pulani. The setting is very private, with the owners, Walt and Sue next door if you need them. There is the most wonderful homegrown organic passionfruit jelly and some coffee waiting for your first breakfast. (try the jelly with soy sauce as a glaze on anything on the BBQ) The two master suites are on opposite sides of the very well laid out floorplan. The bedroom with two twin beds and the laundry room are in the middle of the house. This worked great for us with three boys...15, 17 and 20. It would also be perfect for two couples or grandma&grandpa, mom& dad & 2 kids. We loved the lanai opening to the living room! The sunsets are spectacular from the backyard, and it was fun to watch the cruise ships sail in. This property is perfect whether you want to explore the island every day or if you just want to chill by the pool. I could not recommend this property more highly!

5 stars aren't enough!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic, inviting, spacious, airy, comfortable, affordable, beautifully decorated, wonderful amenities, great location, thoughtful attention to detail...have I piqued your interest yet? These are all of what you'll experience and more from Susan and Walt's immaculate home in sunny Kona! Our family vacationed here for a week and staying here, plus the breathtaking vistas on the Big Island, were undoubtedly an absolute favorite of all our travels! We loved everything about our time, from the comfortable beds, to the stunning seascapes and sunsets, everything was truly what you hope for when you plan an ultimate vacation. Susan warmly greeted us upon our arrival and was quite helpful in providing us with directions throughout our stay, which were much appreciated. Since it is the BIG island, we had to maintain a schedule to get in our list of must see's, but there were quite a few "knock your sock's off" surprises along the way. Every beach we visited was beautifully unique and incredibly stunning. The Black Sand(s) and Green Sand beaches were phenomenal. I highly recommend taking the time to see them. We needed a jeep to get to two of them and off-roading with our parents was exhilarating, bone jostling and hilarious, all at the same time. We enjoyed grand dinners at the Four Seasons and the Canoe House and both we exceptional. Just to give some perspective, we also spent a week on Oahu as well. We enjoyed our time there and it is well worth it to spend a day just at Pearl Harbor, but we all agree our favorite was our time on the Big island. Hope that helps some of you trying to decide which island to stay on. We definitely look forward to returning soon and often! Mahalo Susan and Walt!

Highly recommended.

  • 5 of 5

We highly recommend this delightful home with amazing views of the coast. Owners are nearby so there was no need to chase anyone down for answers, and their proximity made us feel very secure. Excellent well-equipped kitchen so we could take advantage of the variety of local products to prepare some of our own meals. Plenty of information about the area and its attractions were provided. We will return!

Wonderful Place for a Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at the Kona Sunset Hale with our adult sons and daughter-in-law. We arrived after a long day of flight delays and almost missing our connection to Kona. We arrived without luggage as it didn't make the connection but nothing seemed to matter once we arrive at this beautiful home! We instantly felt relaxed and Sue and Walt met us at the house with the keys They stayed only long enough to welcome us and show us some of the features of the house. We really felt as if we were home! The house is exactly as it appears in the photos, nothing has been exaggerated, it is just that beautiful! We enjoyed all of our meals on the lovely covered lanai just taking in the spectacular view. The kitchen is beautiful and well equipped. The beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms are very luxurious. It was a treat to have our very own private pool. We stayed only 5 days and that was really our mistake, we should have stayed much longer! I can't recommend this property highly enough. We can't wait to go back!

A SPECTACULAR vacation home!

  • 5 of 5

Kailua Sunset Hale is an amazing villa. From the moment we walked in, we were "blown away" by the view.(even though we had seen the pictures on the website) The owner was there to welcome and greet us, and show us the house. This home is in perfect condition, is beautifully decorated, and has too many luxurious touches to list. There is a large veranda and manicured garden, all of which have a 180 degree view of the ocean. The experience of staying there for two weeks was relaxing beyond description. We often shortened our days of touring just to get home in time to celebrate those unforgettable sunsets.

We enjoy 21 of the 23 climates in the world, which presents us with multitudes of choices every day. From snowboarding/skiiing on top of Mauna Kea to swimming with the mantas.. All in one day if you wish. We often experience the red lava flow of Kileauea Volcano, strolling through a lava tube, and hiking the surrounding area. The waterfalls are refreshing and can be seen from Akaka Falls to Waipio Valley. You can plant yourselves on a black sand beach along side the turtles who rest there daily. Golf, golf. and more golf. The west side of the Big island is a golfers paradise. Courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and others of his notoriety. Challenging at times but always filled with the beauty of the ocean and the mountains.

Hungry? We have the flavors from the most renowned chefs to the best ' local style' foods. A luau is a must do just to experience the tastes of the islands. Our beaches are like no others we have ever seen. Many are hidden from view, so you will not find them crowded with people, instead you will find turtles ( honus) resting, palm trees swaying, and a pool of aqua warm water waiting your arrival. The Big Island is a surfers dream. We have summer spots brought from the south and winter spots brought by the north. There are beginner breaks and breaks for those without fear. We also have a terrific surf lesson beach for those of you who want to give it a try.

We have hiking, biking, running, walking, for all levels.

I really can't think of anything we don't have... except snakes.

Which is a good thing, especially when you are on that that treacherous forest trail. :) Please enjoy our island, you will marvel at the calmness and beauty offered to you while you are here... its called 'Aloha Spirit' We look forward to meeting you.

A hui hou
