Our Puamana home is an idyllic island style one bedroom bungalow, perfect for 1-2 couples or for a small family. Puamana is one of the lovliest places on Maui and our home has one of the best ocean view locations within Puamana, opposite the central lawn area. We are just steps to the beach. Puamana is a unique gated beachfront community one mile from Lahaina, where residents and guests share 28 acres of tropical gardens, almost a mile of beach, 2 surf breaks, 3 swimming pools, and a tennis court. Puamana was the former estate of the manager of the Pioneer Sugar Mill, and the gracious 1920’s historic home is now lovingly maintained as our Clubhouse. You can enjoy the plantation era reception rooms, piano, tiled courtyard, spectacular ocean front swimming pool (unique in the Islands), lending library, and lawns, all with the alluring ambiance of Old Hawaii.
Everyone enjoys walking or riding bikes in Puamana and cars drive slowly so there is little to disturb the tranquility. You can check the surf from our front deck and walk across the grass to the beach. The family friendly Dolphin Pool is just out the back. Every member of the family can be delightfully content here, the surfers, the swimmers, the book readers, the beach goers, the sand castle builders…all without a car, or even shoes!
Our one bedroom, 1 ½ + bathroom, has been recently refurbished and refurnished. The bedroom with ensuite bathroom (shower) has a sliding glass door to the back lanai and a secluded garden area enclosed by ferns and palms. The livingroom has a queen sized sofa bed, and opens via sliding glass door to the lanai and garden also. The main bathroom (shower over tub) opens from the connecting hallway, so privacy may be maintained for 2 couples sharing. The fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar looks out towards the ocean. Smooth pale bamboo floors, simple tropical style furniture, and full air conditioning provide for a comfortable welcoming atmosphere. We provide free wi-fi, plus fax/printer, DVD and cable TV, washer/dryer. Our front deck with ocean view and rear lanai provide for informal outside dining and BBQ area, all surrounded by flowering shrubs and tropical plants.

My sister, Janet, and I share ownership of this home. Janet is an artist in Lahaina. She is living the dream, surfing and painting. Her Maui inspired landscapes are displayed to good effect in our home. Her boys have grown up to be great surfers and creatives and live in California. I have spent a lot of time on Maui over the years. I now live in Scotland and work as a photographer. These days I am also very busy with my young children, encouraging them into a variety of water sports, despite the Scottish climate! We visited Puamana every year to see my parents who spent much of their retirement there, and now to visit Auntie Janet and to enjoy some warm ocean water!

Our parents were original owners of this home, buying it in 1969, when they had the pick of Puamana. It’s low rise, low density charm was obvious even through the dust of construction. They chose our unit for its prime location, so close to the beach and the pool, with a view of the surf...perfect for us kids. They probably did not foresee the impact Puamana would have on the lives and imaginations of their children! We all fell in love with Maui, learned to surf and to enjoy the ocean. It has influenced us all in different ways, but has run a constant thread though our lives.
Amazingly, while so much on Maui has changed, all that we remember about Puamana from over 40 years ago remains enchantingly the same today...only the trees are taller! We even have some of the same neighbors (well, like the trees… the same but older!). Our own children have loved learning to swim and surf on the beach opposite our house just as we did. Our parents have both passed on now, but we retain their commitment to Puamana and to providing a comfortable and relaxing home for our renters in this special place.
Puamana days are long and happy and filled with the simple pleasures of sand and surf. The sunsets are unrivalled! We enjoy the ocean, so every day starts with an early morning swim, watching the sun rise up over the West Maui Mountains and checking for whales out to sea. Then a paddle out for a morning of surfing Puamana’s glassy mellow waves with my kids (one of the absolute best things in life!). Back for coffee and breakfast of tropical fruit and croissants from the bakery, and then the children will probably want to go to play at the pool of back to the beach. Rest and read on our comfy swing bench after lunch, and then do it all again, or maybe paddle board along the coast a little, checking out the turtles who regularly pop their heads up in the surf break. After a day of easy fun filled beach activity, it’s an added pleasure to walk to the clubhouse for a book from the library, or a cool calming swim in the ocean pool. In Puamana it is easy to enjoy every minute of your precious vacation. Walking through the grounds past the fountain, playing frisbee under the huge spreading mango trees, collecting fallen plumeria flowers off the grass, and watching rainbows form over the West Maui Mountains…it is all a joy.
The attractions of nearby Lahaina include restaurants, shops, a movie theatre, art galleries, cafes, museums, surf schools, rental shops for bikes, boards, etc and a picturesque yacht harbor where you will find charter boats for sailing, whale watching, snorkeling, diving and fishing. You can stroll to Lahaina from Puamana along a lovely palm fringed beach most of the way, emerging at the Harbor right in the central part of town.
Beyond Lahaina, Maui boasts an abundance of outdoor adventures and amazing places to explore. You will be limited only by your imagination and energy…and your willingness to leave Puamana!
What a relaxing place to call home for our 10 day vacation on Maui. Thank you for opening up your home to us and the wonderful aloha spirit you showed us as we worked out our arrangements. We will definitely be back!
This property was a perfect location - a walk to Lahiana and right across the street from the beach. This townhouse has a view from the front porch to the waterfront even though it is not sitting on the beach but just take you chairs walk across the street to the open lawn area and join everyone else for the nightly ritual of drinks, conversation and watching the sun set. Note - the beach is not sandy so water shoes were needed for swimming - great place surfing and paddle boards - we had our own free entertainment. The townhouse was perfect for us - a great front porch that looked toward the water and a private back patio with a grill and close to the family pool (but not too close so you don't hear the noise.)
Washer and dryer (we didn't take a lot of clothes and just did laundry as needed), comfortable King size bed and the pull out bed in the living room for our daughter and grandson.
Comfortable townhouse - great vacation!
My partner and I spent a wonderful 2 weeks in this unit. We loved it and hope to be back. The listing description was accurate and the photos good. The unit was impeccably clean, the kitchen well-equipped, the bed super comfortable. Sheets and towels were excellent quality. We loved being able to just walk across the back yard to the pool. Also loved the low density nature of the development. The grounds were beautifully maintained and the staff friendly. We used the barbecue a lot.
We spent hours watching sunsets and relaxing in the porch swing. Groceries and restaurants were relatively nearby. Owners were responsive. The woman who cleans the unit lives in Puamana and was happy to answer questions when we saw her.
We'd recommend this unit to anyone. Suggest using the mosquito coil and bug spray in the evenings if you're sensitive to bites.
Thank you for sharing your rental unit with us. The home was clean and described correctly. There were a couple of maintenance problems, which were looked after immediately. The TV remote was not working properly, so the owners replaced it with a brand new flat screen. The rental unit is probably the most affordable one with an ocean view. Thank you, Christine and Janet for all your help and support during our three week stay.
We loved your place and the location, it was not quite oceanfront but the next best thing. We got to spend 3 weeks in your home enjoying the Puamana community which we loved. Our favorite thing was sitting on the front lanai with a glass of wine and watching the sunset every evening, I really miss that! The townhouse was clean and the king bed was very comfortable. I enjoyed the fact there was an air-conditioner in both the living room and bedroom, we used the bedroom one almost every night and it worked very well. The owners responded very quickly with an issue we had with the dishwasher and sent a repairman out the next day, which we appreciated. The adults only pool was great, we would spend many afternoons in lounge chairs in the shade of a palm tree and enjoy the peace and quiet. We are already planning on coming back again next winter.
We really enjoyed this clean Puamana condo! It had everything we needed and was so well located! We have stayed in larger oceanfront condos at this resort over the years when we had bigger family groups and were worried whether we would be happy with this smaller unit which is set a little back however this location is perfect. You still have the ocean view from the front porch which had both table and chairs and a swing. Inside the unit had a very comfortable king size be (and we could hear the ocean from bed at night), and very nicely furnished living room, stocked kitchen, and 2 bathrooms. We did not use the air conditioner. Back patio had a charcoal grill as well as table and chairs which we also enjoyed using. If you are not familiar with this Resort know that it is oceanfront and has three pools, tennis courts, is a park-like setting and close enough to walk into town. Gorgeous sunsets. Best location for whale watching and beginner surfboarding, kayaking, and paddleboard. Wish we could have stayed longer.
This rental is in a very lovely condominium development. However it is in poor condition, in dire need of repair, upgrading and refreshment. There are rusty fittings in the bathroom, a badly stained shower stall, water damaged walls under several windows with pealing paint and crumbling plaster, dingy curtains, sofa cushions with burst seams, a porch swing rusty and broken, the front deck with an uneven surface, with sagging boards...etc.etc. I have corresponded extensively with the owners who seemed surprised at the extent of decay and decline and assured me that would get it all ship-shape. Until they do, I wouldn't recommend you staying there.
When it is all done, iypt is a lovely setting for young and old.
